    Abstract
Considers how Intranets are being developed by adapting Internet technologies. Discusses the Internet technologies of data transport, file transfer, massage exchange, and information and document dissemination on the Web and explains how these may be implemented within an organization. Documentation professionals may use these techniques to improve the circulation of information within a company and increase the accumulation of knowledge

    Abstract
Part 3 of a 3-part series on the electronic management of documents parts 1 and 2 of which appeared in Argus 26(3) 1997 and 27(1) 1998 respectively. Looks at 3 concepts relating to the management and communication of electronic documents within the corporate network: groupware, or the automation of work in groups; workflow, or the management of the flow of information to be treated; and intranet, which indicates the private network of an organization supplying internally the technologies responsible for the success of Internet and the World Wide Web. Considers the advantages of the electronic document operated on computer networks over paper handled through traditional channels focusing on intranet because of the importance it is given as an infrastructure for integration of document management activities and because it represents a major challenge for the information professionals of today

    Abstract
Discusses the development of Campus Wide Information Systems with reference to the work of Leuven University Library. A 4th phase can now be distinguished in the evolution of CWISs as they evolve towards Intranets. WWW technology is applied to organise a consistent interface to different types of information, databases and services within an institution. WWW servers now exist via which queries and query results are translated from the Web environment to the specific database query language and vice versa. The integration of Java will enable programs to be executed from within the Web environment. Describes each phase of CWIS development at KU Leuven

    Abstract
Examines the future importance of intranets for those managing the flow of information within companies and corporate institutions. A survey from the Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group of UK information technology directors concluded that information overload was being widely experience4d and that intranets had scarcely been used so far. Looks at 2 case histories: Parcelforce's intranet service, available both internally and for customer use; and the experience of British Nuclear Fuels, whose intranet for internal use helps identify and prevent the creation of duplicate information

    Abstract
Defines knowledge management as the systematic acquisition, synthesis, and sharing of information, insights and experiences to enable ongoing business success and argues that the primary role of the Knowledge Intranet is to equip an organization to deal with change. Discusses the 4 components of a Business Integration Model and considers issues common to most knowledge management projects as the starting point for the development of objectives based upon the experience of Andersen Consulting, Oslo, Norway. These are: using knowledge to gain competitive edge; making tacit knowledge explicit; sharing key business processes; and identifying guiding principles. Discusses the promotion of organizational learning, communication as an enabler, and the importance of personal development in the learning organization, which is the overall objective of an organization engaging in knowledge management

    Abstract
The web has brought to the business world an inexpensive way of distributing corporate information to employees, business partners and customers. The term intranet describes a closed computer network built upon World Wide Web technology in which access is restricted to a particular group of users, typically employees of a company. The term extranet is used when access is extended to a privileged user group: customers and suppliers for example. This paper examines the role of the World Wide Web in the Research Library at Scottish Media Newspapers, in particular how it complements the portfolio of traditional online sources, CD Roms and books. It also describes the extent to which searching has moved from the intermediary to the end user. In the mid 1990s, just as the web was beginning its spectacular rise to fame, Scottish Media Newspapers developed a browser-based interface to the in-house database of newspaper stories, a process that led to the creation of a corporate intranet. The creation of the intranet has been accompanied by a redefining of staff roles in an attempt to change the image from passive librarian to dynamic research specialist. The paper concludes by examining the role of the information professional/librarian in a world where end users will have a vast range of information from internal and external sources at their fingertips.

    Abstract
Reprts on recent trends in the use of Intranets and the Internet in the UK. Internet penetration has reached 3 quarters of UK organizations and a 3rd have developed corporate Intranets. There is an exponential growth in the overall European market for Intranet hardware. There is an increasing dominance of security related items. The use of network computers is forecast to grow. The Internet boom will accelerate the growth in the market for routers for building large data networks

As a case study, this paper will demonstrate how Euterpe, the large terminological database of the Parliament of the European Communities, can be made accessible by means of a Web server interface in a from that can be used by both the Parliaments translators in their in-house Intranet environment and, in a later state, by users all over the world to query the rich contents of Euterpe

    Abstract
Explains how the Intranet (in effect an Internet limited to the computer systems of a single organization) developed out of the Internet, and what its uses and advantages are. Focuses on the Intranet developed in the Glaxo Wellcome organization. Briefly discusses a number of technologies in development, e.g. Java, Real audio, 3D and VRML, and summarizes the issues involved in the successful development of the Intranet, that is, bandwidth, searching tools, security, and legal issues

    Abstract
Discusses the use of intranets for coporate information services. Examines whether WWW intranets will replace the use of Lotus Notes Groupware for internal corporate networking. Reports on a questionnaire survey of a sample of organisations with intranets which focused on the library's role in setting up and monitoring the sites. Covers: library involvement; technical issues; time devoted to running the systems; and content
