    Abstract
Library science may well have an essential role to play in efficiently organising the huge amount of Internet information available in the various scientific disciplines. The basic problem is to develop a cataloguing theory sufficiently flexible to cope with the impact of an ever changing store of network data. Such a theory would abondon the utopian idea of a 'catalogue of ctalogues', seeking instead to match each specific user query to the most appropriate catalogue. Examines 2 important USA projects for cataloguing network resources: Digital Libraries Research (funded by the National Science Foundation), which uses a combination of search engines to retrieve net data; and the Internet Public Library. Lists the Management and Library Schools now on the WWW

    Abstract
Replies to some criticisms of the GADA (Manuale per la gestione automatizzata delle descrizioni archivistiche / Archival Descriptions Automation Handbook) the archival theory underlying it, and GADA's application in CDS/ISIS. Discusses the relationship between library, archival and information science; archival search via topics/subjects as well as by institution; and the relation between the ISAD(G) descriptive standard and MARC AMC. Reviews the impact of computers on archival theory and practice

    Abstract
Discusses the 5 new laws of library science formulated by M. Gorman (1995) as an updated reinterpretation of Ranganathan's original rules. Notes Gorman's hostility to outsourcing, his belief that uncontrolled automation in libraries will harm cataloguing, and his view that there will always be a role for printed and other non electronic forms of communication. Reviews also the alternative 'Five new laws of librarianship' proposed by M. Line (1996). Concludes that Ranganathan's 5 precepts remain valid in today's changed conditions

    Abstract
The article illustrates briefly the principles at the basis of the theory of science and the universal system conceived.

    Abstract
Analyses the technical features of the 5 main search fields of the OPAC run by Bologna University's interlibrary centre (CIB), part of the National Library Service (SBN). The CIB links about 100 academic and civil library collections on the humanities, social sciences, and science subjects. With the aid of Home Page / Helpline displays, examines how OPAC search procedures are carried out by author, title, subject, ISBN, or single library. Also explains the data filtering methods used. The CIB will soon broaden its OPAC search strategies by adopting the Florence University library OPAC research structure

    Abstract
Analyses 5 articles on subjects of bibliographic interest in the 1st ed. (1751-80) of Encyclopedie, now re-issued in facsimile form. The article headings (translated) are Bibliomane, Bibliomania, Librarian, Library, and Catalogue. The relevant authors include Diderot, d'Alembert and David, among others. By identifying likely sources, the analysis throws light on library science developments in the early 18th century. D'Alembert's contribution, in particular, contains the seeds of the modern view of what libraries ought not to be

    Abstract
Considers the 2 conflicting phenomena of disintermediation and information overload, which in the Internet era respectively pose a threat and offer an opportunity to the librarian and information science profession. User-orientated commercial products and services are tending to promote user information autonomy; but, more positively, the online electronic publication explosion has impelled librarians to cretae Net information resource catalogues, and the IT community to devise novel Internet access tools. Librarians will thus have a useful role to fulfil in both the free and fee-paying E-information sectors as cybrarians or information managers
