    Abstract
In West Germany bibliographic material published after 1980 has been changed from a conventional to a computerized networking infrastructure, yet the provision of publications is based on conventional networks. Provides a history of electronic library networking in Germany covering networking at local, regional and natioanl levels; bibliographic control of books and serials and the enrichment of machine readable library files to bibliographic and factual databases through CD-ROM. Covers recommendations of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. Standardisation and research work in German libraries for future networking is directed towards bibliographic control and national format (MAB), availability of publications, dataflow and telecommunications

    Abstract
Determines how bibliographic instruction in Canadian academic libraries is evolving to meet this need in the current dynamic environment. The survey data revealed that traditional content and delivery continues to be stressed. Technology is reportedly changing bibliographic instruction in positive ways, towards the teaching of critical evaluation and research strategies and incorporating more hand-on user training

    Abstract
In Germany there are currently only 3 public libraries which supply information by means of external data bases: the munipical library systems of Duisburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf. Staff members belonging to the working group which has been established by these 3 institutions report their experiences to date. Findings revealed that data base searches offer a valuable supplement to the traditional reference tools, that new groups of users can be won by providing electronic information retrieval, and that the image of the library was raised in the eyes of the general public and the city administration. On the other hand, considerable effort is necessary in order to publicise the service and there are significant costs involved for the library and its users

    Abstract
The reference information files at several UCLA libraries were merged and prepared for conversion to machine-readable form under a Council on Library Resources grant. The database structure was conceived using the following factors: data elements, field indexes, syndetic structure, and the possible future sharing of files with the Los Angeles Public Library. Information was entered into a microcomputer using Inmagic, a sophisticated text management system that includes among its features Boolean searching, extensice indexing capabilities, and variable length fields. Future implementation of Infofile will depend on funding, but may include translation into ORION, the UCLA online catalog

    Abstract
Reports the findings of an experiment designed to compare on-line data bases and equivalent printed versions in 1 area of reference services, the answering of ready reference questions. 68 reference librarians searched for answers to the same set of 12 questions using either print or on-line sources. Details of the questions are given. In the case of conceptual questions on-line proved faster than print, particularly for 2-concept questions, and the increased speed was not at the expense of accuracy. In the case of factual questions, print sources proved to be considerably faster than on-line. Suggests 2 guidelines: when bibliographic information is available in both print and on-line formats, on-line should be the tool of choice, particularly for multi-concept questions; simple factul questions can be answered more quickly using printed sources.

    Abstract
Describes a proposed system for helping public library users, in praticular students, in their document searches. The system would directly involve users in compiling cards that indictae the various library sources (encyclopedias, books, newspapers, magazines, etc.) from which they retrieved bibliographic data. These cards would then be used to create a search path catalogue having 2 sections: general research topics; and keywords. Subsequently the librarian would form a database from this information. Such a system would not only benefit other researchers but also help the library to plan acquisition and rationalise its document arrangements. The scheme won 3rd prize in an open competition designated 'La biblioteca desiderata' (The kind of library we want), promoted jointly by the Milan Province Cultural Office and Biblioteche Oggi

    Abstract
The library literature suggests that bibliographic instruction (BI) librarians are at risk for burnout, a syndrome of emotional ehaustion, depersonalization, and loss of a sense of personal accomplishment. To assess the extent and nature of burnout in this group 142 college and university librarians in New England, USA completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory and a Role Questionnaire, using a mailed survey. Survey data indicate that BI librarians experience burnout, with 52% reporting high burnout in one dimension of the syndrome and 8,5% showing high burnout in all 3 dimensions. Follow-up interviews explored the nature of the role conflict experienced by survey respondents and its contribution to burnout. The study raised questions about the failure of the profession to provide adequate educational preparation for the role of the BI librarian

    Abstract
As a constantly changing resource, the Internet poses a challenge for bibliographic instruction librarians. Until recently, there has been little effort to survey Internet users about their search behaviours or source of Internet instruction. Focuses on survey data collected at Albany University, SUNY, early in 1995. It provides information about how users learned to use the Internet (mostly by themselves), the penetration of the Internet instruction programme (only 13% of those surveyed had attended), and public awareness of both instruction and the availability of Internet terminals in the university library

    Abstract
The Maricopa County Library Center, Phoenix, Ariz., established a computerized vertical file when it opened in 1991. The vertical file was introduced to hold the reference library's pamphlets in vertical file folders. Computerized records are created for the vertical file items and the subject headings assigned to the items are merged with the same subject headings for other formats in the computerized catalogue database. Four criteria were followed when creating and maintaining the vertical file: emphasis of quality over quantity; bibliographic control over each item, development of easy user access to materials; and periodic review for weeding and selection purposes. Describes the use of Pro-Cite as a bibliographic database management system for pamphlets and the method of providing subject access through MARC record templates in the DRA (Data Research Associates) computerized catalogue. Describes procedures for conducting the annual review of the vertical file contents and the results of the first review conducted

    Abstract
Describes the variety of search services supporting library reference functions offered by the RLG in the USA. The best known of these is RLIN, the massive bibliographic database and related services originally developed for shared cataloguing. In the last few years RLG has added CitaDel, an online search system that provides access to indexing/abstracting databases; and Zephyr, a Z39.50 server that amkes the RLIN and CitaDel databases searchable through a library's online catalogue. RLG also offers document delivery connections, including Ariel and Internet based document delivery software, for a full complement of online reference support for academic and public libraries

    Abstract
Although hundreds of undergraduate students receive library instruction when their instructors arrange for a class tour or bibliographic instruction session, thousands of other students do not. Describes the planning process that took place in the development of a cross platform interactive multimedia instruction program designed to be accessible to students with diverse information literacy skills. Covers the merits and limitations of several authoring software packages and offers some guidelines concerning time requirements

    Abstract
Purpose - This paper takes forward strands from "Evaluating the quality of library portals" by the author and places them in the context of different approaches to teaching students about information use. Design/methodology/approach - An opinion piece which examines the impact on user behaviour of traditional mechanical library skills training (such as "library orientation", "bibliographic instruction", or "information skills training" rather than true information literacy-based teaching). The paper points out the similarity in the effects of such teaching to the effects of offering users a more powerful mechanical information retrieval tool (such as a library portal or internet search engine) without effective support on how the information retrieved should be used for significant educational outcomes. Findings - For librarians to be custodians of the highest standards of intelligent information use, they must demonstrate a meaningful, rather than a mechanical understanding and application of information literacy in their everyday practice. Without this, information users will rightly turn to new, non-mediated forms of information use such as internet search engines, which can deal with purely technical challenges of information retrieval superficially well. Both the users and the profession itself will be the poorer as a result. Research limitations/implications - An expression of opinion about the dangers of pedagogically underdeveloped user education on user behaviour. Practical implications - This opinion piece gives some clear and practical insights for the application of information literacy principles to library practice. Originality/value - This piece points out the ironic similarities in the effect of a mechanistic or tool-based approach to user education and unmediated user access to internet search engines or Library portals: above all, a "more is better" approach in the information user, marked by citing too much poorly digested, poorly evaluated data.

    Abstract
This study reports an analysis of referral URL data by the Cornell University IP address from the American Chemical Society servers. The goal of this work is to better understand the tools used and pathways taken when scientists connect to electronic journals. While various methods of referral were identified in this study, most individuals were referred infrequently and followed few and consistent pathways each time they connected. The relationship between the number and types of referrals followed an inverse-square law. Whereas the majority of referrals came from established finding tools (library catalog, library e-journal list, and bibliographic databases), a substantial number of referrals originated from generic Web searches. Scientists are also relying an local alternatives or substitutes such as departmental or personal Web pages with lists of linked publications. The use of electronic mail as a method to refer scientists directly to online articles may be greatly underestimated. Implications for the development of redundant library services such as e-journal lists and the practice of publishers to allow linking from other resources are discussed.
