    Abstract
This paper analyzes proposals for augmenting library bibliographic records for improved subject searching in online catalogs. Possible fields for enrichment are described and their likely value assessed. The assessment determines that the main value of enriched records would be to provide access to parts of books. The paper presents arguments for and against adding book content indexing to the online catalog and analyzes the feasibility of eleven alternatives for providing such information

    Abstract
An assessment of B.C. Vickery's contribution to the development of classification for retrieval. This has been both practical anf intellectual. On the practical side his work in the early CRG and elsewhere enhanced the status of classification for retrieval as a significant field of study. On the intellectual side he demonstrated the use of his own elaborated version of Ranganathan's facets for the purposes of western special libraries.. He analysed the ssential features of retrieval systems generally as the required framework within which classification could usefully play a part. The paper discusses some remaining 'grey areas' in faceted classification, classificatory fragments implicit in many thesauri, and the value for expository purposes of a mildly polemic approach to issues in classification

    Abstract
Planning the evaluation of an information retrieval system involves a determination of the performance descriptors and measures appropriate to the system objectives and a development of an evaluation design that ensures the effect of variation in components of interest will be isolated and assessed in an anbiased fashion. Presents an evaluation model that is appropriate to the assessment of the effect, from the perspective of the user, of variation in the interface to the system. The model is exemplified by an application to evaluation of an experimental on-line public access catalogue interface.

    Abstract
Issues concerning the formulation and application of a model of how humans value information are examined. Formulation of a value function is based on research from modelling, value assessment, human information seeking behavior, and human decision making. The proposed function is incorporated into a computer-based fiction retrieval system and evaluated using data from nine searches. Evaluation is based on the ability of an individual's value function to discriminate among novels selected, rejected, and not considered. The results are discussed in terms of both formulation and utilization of a value function as well as the implications for extending the proposed formulation to other information seeking environments

    Abstract
The availability and content of on-line bibliographic records for curriculum materials are evaluated in this study. Records were selected from the OCLC OnLine Union Catalog, the predominant on-line bibliographic network providing cataloging to all types of libraries including school libraries and others supporting curriculum material collections. Based on a sample of shelflist cards for curriculum materials from the Instructional Materials Laboratory collection of the University Libraries at California State University, Northridge, a quantitative assessment is made of the content of the matching OCLC records. Study results suggest that the availability and content of OCLC catalog records for curriculum materials may satisfy the bibliographic information and access requirements of curriculum materials collection librarians.

    Abstract
Bibliographic records for microcomputer software in the OCLC Online Union Catalog are evaluated primarily for the purpose of focusing catalogers' attention on selected record areas in need of more consistent treatment. The degree of cataloging inconsistency evident in these records is examined with respect to the application of rules and prescriptions embodied in AACR2 Chapter 9, the ALA Guidelines for cataloging microcomputer software, and the application of Library of Congress subject cataloging practice to these materials. A secondary purpose of this quantitative/qualitative study is to provide a general assessment of the overall composition of microcomputer software cataloging during this transition period between the use of available but disparate sources of descriptive cataloging guidance and their eventual consolidation in the future edition of AACR2.
