    Abstract
Library information service assessment studies can help the reference librarian to form an accurate judgement on the library's structure and organization in terms of: efficiency; effectiveness; and cost/benefit ratio. These 3 assessment criteria can be applied to the following areas: staff; users; user requests; answers provided; library information service potential; and collection and documentation resources. Each of these areas yields further sub-categories for evaluation. Data collection methods depend on the end purpose of the assessment study, but may include the issue of questionnaires to librarians and users, and non invasive observation of user activities. The studies can be unpopular, as they may result in cuts in staff or services

    Abstract
Are organizations interested in realizing the potential of their personnel? How far have they progressed in utilizing performance assessment instruments for developmental purposes? There is a growing need for redirecting organizations toward greater knowledge productivity, and using personnel's competencies in a knowledge productive way. Development centers haue the potential of analyzing and diagnosing relevant competencies of personnel while at the same time providing a match wich further development. It was studied, within a representative set of large Dutch organizations, already familiar with the concept of assessment centers, to what degree management conceptions and actual implementation conditions are present for the introduction of development centers. The advantages of development centers as a knowledgeproductive tool for assessment in organizations are elaborated.

    Abstract
Proposes a new method of evaluating information retrieval systems by concentrating on individual tools in the context of their use, rather than systems as a whole. A tool is a command, its menu or graphic interface equivalent, or a move or stratagem. A user would render an assessment of the relative success of a small part of a search, and every tool used in that part would be credited with a contribution to the result, whether positive or negative. The cumulative scores would provide an assessment of the overall utility of the tool

    Abstract
Keyword based querying has been an immediate and efficient way to specify and retrieve related information that the user inquired. However, conventional document ranking based on an automatic assessment of document relevance to the query may not be the best approach when little information is given. Proposes an idea to integrate 2 existing techniques, query expansion and relevance feedback to achieve a concept-based information search for the Web

    Abstract
Provides functional performance data drawn from an analysis of the capabilities and functionality of 3 major library automation systems: HORIZON, INNOPAC and Virginia Tech Library System (VTLS). The assessment was based on vendor input as well as on feedback from libraries of different types from different parts of the world. Objective criteria based on a numerical scoring scheme was used to assess system performance in 6 major functional areas: acquisition; cataloguing; circulation; OPAC; reference and information services; and serials control. The functional performance data is expected to be useful for libraries loking for new systems as well as those already computerised and interested in enhancing their present systems. In addition, data on the extent of the utilisation of system capabilities by libraries should also be of interest to system vendors

    Abstract
Provides practical advice and guidance to subject librarians in UK academic libraries preparing for teaching quality assessment (TQA) visits. Suggests what action librarians should take prior to an assessment visit, including forms of departmental liaison. Provides a comprehensive checklist, arranged into six broad categories, of those issues which can be raised by assessors. Describes the author's recent experiences of TQA for science and engineering subjects at the University of Edinburgh. Indicates what action should be taken after the assessment visit.

    Abstract
The increasing technicalization of knowledge calls for a school of thought in technology assessment which occupies itself with the cognitive foundations of knowledge technology and the consequences and effects of the technicalization of knowledge. The present contribution hopes to stimulate ISKO into taking an interest in this problem field

    Abstract
Describes the development, application and evaluation of a system dynamics based methodology for the assessment of computerised information systems (CIS) carried out as part of a joint research project between the University of Bradford Management Centre and Defense Research Agency (Military): Assessment methods based solely on the internal attributes of the CIS are inadequate. There is a need for assessment in terms of the contribution which the CIS makes to the overall performance of the host systemin which it will be implanted. Describes a methodology based on system dynamics which embodies this principle

    Abstract
This is a call for librarians to adopt performance measures and learn to work with the results so that assessment of reference services is not left to those who neither understand nor value libraries. This fascinating book explores a wealth of assessment methods that librarians can use to collect data and create standards that are valid, practical and useful in accounting for reference services. Some of the methodologies described include quantitative measures, qualitative measures, patron surveys, questionnaires, interviews, case studies, peer review, unobtrusive testing, and even updating the library's policies and procedures manual
