    Abstract
Since its introduction as a library resource in 1984, the use of CD-ROM technology has proliferated among a multitude of vendors. In 1987, Ulrich's, a major supplier of serials information, jumped on the bandwagon when the entire data bases of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory and Ulrich's Irregular Serials and Annuals become available on CD-ROM as Ulrich's Plus. The next year, Ebsco introduced The Serials Directory in CD-ROM version. Examines and compares these data base systems as reference tools.

    Abstract
More and more libraries are providing access to Web resources through OCLC's (Online Computer Resource Center) Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC) and, by extension, OCLC's WorldCat database. The ability to use a database to its maximum potential depends upon understanding what a database contains and the guidelines for its construction. This study examines the characteristics of Web resources in CORC in terms of their subject matter, the source of the content, publication patterns, and the units of information chosen for representation in the database. The majority of the 414 resources in the sample belonged to the social sciences. Academic libraries and government agencies contributed more than 90% of the records for resources in the sample. Using the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2d edition (AACR2) definitions for publication patterns that are part of the upcoming 2002 amendments reveals that nearly half of the sample fell into the category of integrating resources. Identifying units of representation of the resources described was more difficult. Existing definitions for Web units in development are not adequate to describe all of the resources in the sample. In addition, there is wide variability in the units of representation chosen for inclusion by the libraries contributing records, resulting in little predictability in what units of information might be found in the database.

    Abstract
Considers South Africa's national bibliographic activities in the light of the need for more equitable access to information resources. Outlines several factors which are important for improving access to information for previously marginalized communities, and for general development purposes. The issues include: funds available for existing and prospective services; the heterogeneous clientele for future services; the phenomenon of composite CD-ROMs; the question of ownership of bibliographic tools; standardization problems; cooperative bibliographic activities; the information value of grey literature; and recognizing the broader base of stakeholders in national bibliographic services

    Abstract
Defines bibliographic utilities. The databases maintained by most bibliographic utilities are essentially online union catalogues. Describes 7 organisations that offer online, timeshared cataloguing support services in North America: OCLC; RLIN; the Western Library Network (WLN); Utlas; the AGILE 3 system; the Interactive Access System; and Open DRANET. Discusses equipment and communications; database characteristics; record retrieval; cataloguing support; output products; related products and services; and utilities versus CD-ROM

    Abstract
Contribution to an issue devoted to serials and reference services. Aims to acquaint reference librarians with the information provided by the United States Newspaper Program and its state projects, and to describe the methods by which this information can be assessed. USNP participants are working toward the cataloguing and detailed location and holdings description of virtually every newspaper in the US. This information is resulting in the creation of a comprehensive newspaper reference tool. The USNP information is available on-line via bibliographic utilities; it is also available in an off-line product, the United States Newspaper Program National Union List. To use this information, librarians need to possess some knowledge of the scope and complexities of the bibliographic description and union listing of newspapers.

    Abstract
The Australian Bibliographic Network (ABN) and Ozline service supports national access to Australian and overseas materials. The national CJK service provides access to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean language materials. In 1992 it was decided to develop a new system in cooperation with the New Zealand National Library to replace ABN, NZBN, Ozline and Kiwinet through the National Document and Information Service project. The 1st stage will be implemeneted in 1997. In Australia, the new service will be marketed und the name WORLD1. Describes the model followed, and the WORL1 architecture. The new system will be an open-client-server system, capable of interfacing with Internet services and accessible through WWW clients

    Abstract
The main objectives of national bibliographic services (NBS) have been: to enable cost effective cataloguing in libraries; to assist libraries in their selection and acquisition activities; and to aid information searching and document location and supply. Requirements for achieving these aims are authoritativeness, comprehensiveness, timeliness and standardization. Traditionally, national bibliographies are the organizations the usually provide NBS within a country's library system. Reports results of a study of national bibliography practice in Europe (in particular in Italy and the UK) which shows that organizational structures and procedures may differ and follow national rules, so that working methods are not easily comparable. Various organizational units may be involved in the production process, the activities that are carried out and the means used to enhace performance. The application of information and communication technologies enables much more flexibility in frequency of issue, format of publication, and content (including tailor made products), thus making it possible to provide more services for more types of user
