    Abstract
The FRBR model is by many considered to be an important contribution to the next generation of bibliographic catalogues, but a major challenge for the library community is how to use this model on already existing MARC-based bibliographic catalogues. This problem requires a solution for the interpretation and conversion of MARC records, and a tool for this kind of conversion is developed as a part of the Norwegian BIBSYS FRBR project. The tool is based on a systematic approach to the interpretation and conversion process and is designed to be adaptable to the rules applied in different catalogues.

    Abstract
This paper presents an overview of the work in progress at the W3C to produce a standard conversion of WordNet to the RDF/OWL representation language in use in the SemanticWeb community. Such a standard representation is useful to provide application developers a high-quality resource and to promote interoperability. Important requirements in this conversion process are that it should be complete and should stay close to WordNet's conceptual model. The paper explains the steps taken to produce the conversion and details design decisions such as the composition of the class hierarchy and properties, the addition of suitable OWL semantics and the chosen format of the URIs. Additional topics include a strategy to incorporate OWL and RDFS semantics in one schema such that both RDF(S) infrastructure and OWL infrastructure can interpret the information correctly, problems encountered in understanding the Prolog source files and the description of the two versions that are provided (Basic and Full) to accommodate different usages of WordNet.

    Abstract
Thesauri can be useful resources for indexing and retrieval on the Semantic Web, but often they are not published in RDF/OWL. To convert thesauri to RDF for use in Semantic Web applications and to ensure the quality and utility of the conversion a structured method is required. Moreover, if different thesauri are to be interoperable without complicated mappings, a standard schema for thesauri is required. This paper presents a method for conversion of thesauri to the SKOS RDF/OWL schema, which is a proposal for such a standard under development by W3Cs Semantic Web Best Practices Working Group. We apply the method to three thesauri: IPSV, GTAA and MeSH. With these case studies we evaluate our method and the applicability of SKOS for representing thesauri.

    Abstract
The Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) has been developed over the course of more than a century, predating the semantic web by some time. Until the 1986, the only concept-toconcept relationship available was an undifferentiated "See Also" reference, which was used for both associative (RT) and hierarchical (BT/NT) connections. In that year, in preparation for the first release of the headings in machine readable MARC Authorities form, an attempt was made to automatically convert these "See Also" links into the standardized thesaural relations. Unfortunately, the rule used to determine the type of reference to generate relied on the presence of symmetric links to detect associatively related terms; "See Also" references that were only present in one of the related terms were assumed to be hierarchical. This left the process vulnerable to inconsistent use of references in the pre-conversion data, with a marked bias towards promoting relationships to hierarchical status. The Library of Congress was aware that the results of the conversion contained many inconsistencies, and intended to validate and correct the results over the course of time. Unfortunately, twenty years later, less than 40% of the converted records have been evaluated. The converted records, being the earliest encountered during the Library's cataloging activities, represent the most basic concepts within LCSH; errors in the syndetic structure for these records affect far more subordinate concepts than those nearer the periphery. Worse, a policy of patterning new headings after pre-existing ones leads to structural errors arising from the conversion process being replicated in these newer headings, perpetuating and exacerbating the errors. As the LCSH prepares for its second great conversion, from MARC to SKOS, it is critical to address these structural problems. As part of the work on converting the headings into SKOS, I have experimented with different visualizations of the tangled web of broader terms embedded in LCSH. This poster illustrates several of these renderings, shows how they can help users to judge which relationships might not be correct, and shows just exactly how Doorbells and Mammals are related.

    Abstract
Since 1980, most of the functions of the card catalog have been gradually incorporated into the online catalog. In contrast, the traditional shelflist has fallen into obscurity as retrospective conversion projects have been completed. Most of the functions of the traditional shelflist have been incorporated into the online catalog; nevertheless, the online catalog still does not provide all the functions that the traditional shelflist used to perform. This paper introduces how Washington State University Libraries set up an online history file to incorporate some of the functions of the traditional shelflist into their online catalog.

    Abstract
This paper recommends that the Library of Congress and other libraries adopt Chinese syllable aggregation as it can help users understand Chinese records. It explains the practice of the four tones in the Chinese language. It suggests that catalogers should be consistent to catalog Chinese materials. It also makes comments on the Library of Congress' latest Pinyin Conversion Project report, and other articles on this topic. It suggests libraries learn Queens' public library system in order to allow users to retrieve, display, and print Chinese records with both English and Chinese characters.

    Abstract
This paper describes a method for converting existing thesauri and related resources from their native format to RDF(S) and OWL. The method identifies four steps in the conversion process. In each step, decisions have to be taken with respect to the syntax or semantics of the resulting representation. Each step is supported through a number of guidelines. The method is illustrated through conversions of two large thesauri: MeSH and WordNet.

    Abstract
Most Likely, this revision of Cataloguing Theory and Practice 6th Edition by Professor C.G. Viswanathan has the distinction of commanding continued use since 1954, both in India and abroad . Besides providing a comprehensive and balanced perspective of library catalogues from Collimates to AACR-2 1988 revision, enabling students and the faculty of library and information science at universities, and practicing cataloguers towards rationalization, the work projects an analysis of pros and cons of continuing the cataloguing procedures and techniques and maintaining it in the traditional form of cards filed in cabinet or to adopt the MARC techniques, and computerise it online with the advanced countries of the West. The impact of computerisation on the users, library staff and library administration with regard to its cost effectiveness has been discussed. Two new chapters. Computerised Catalogue (chapter-8) and Headings for Name Entries (Chapter-26) according to AACR2, 1988 revision has been added. The data and been brought to date. A brief account of the British Library's Cataloguing Conversion Project of the British Museum's General Catalogue to Machine Readable From presents an exciting experience. The Library of Congress MARC System has also been given due consideration. The select working bibliography of a cataloguer has also been revised. he order of the chapters has been, as in previous editions, retained. It is expected that the sixth edition of Cataloguing Theory and Practice' would command the same respect of the author's colleagues, as justify its value as an unfailing companion in all cataloguing assignments.

    Abstract
METIS (previously known as OZIS) is the name of the research information system, currently used by the majority of the Dutch Universities. The system has been (and continuously is) developed by Njimegen University and has, in the last five years, gradually been implemented by other universities in the Netherlands. METIS has been built in ORACLE and is currently available as a Web-based (WWW) information system in both a Dutch and an English version. Part of METIS is a translation module which allows easy conversion of the system to no matter which other language. The translation module also allows an institution to redefine the terms, names, headers, etc... used in METIS, in order to really tailor the system to local needs and habits. The system is fully CERIF compatible and can hold a multitude of data conceming research, e.g.: content description, information an researchers, financial data, publications, cooperation and contacts, etc... Among the most striking features of METIS are: a personal module for researchers, allowing them to create their own individual research Web page based an data in METIS and a management module, offering a possibility to create almost every table conceivable conceming the in- and output of research, including a graphical bar chart presentation of the table data. From the second half of 2002 on, METIS will be available to interested universities outside the Netherlands.

    Abstract
Cornell University Library (CUL) has developed a largely automated method for providing title-level catalog access to electronic journals made available through aggregator packages. CUL's technique for automated e-journal record creation and maintenance relies largely on the conversion of externally supplied metadata into streamlined, abbreviated-level MARC records. Unlike the Cooperative Online Serials Cataloging Program's recently implemented aggregator-neutral approach to e-journal cataloging, CUL's method involves the creation of a separate bibliographic record for each version of an e-journal title in order to facilitate automated record maintenance. An indexed local field indicates the aggregation to which each title belongs and enables machine manipulation of all the records associated with a specific aggregation. Information encoded in another locally defined field facilitates the identification of all of the library's e-journal titles and allows for the automatic generation of a Web-based title list of e-journals. CUL's approach to providing title-level catalog access to its e-journal aggregations involves a number of tradeoffs in which some elements of traditional bibliographic description (such as subject headings and linking fields) are sacrificed in the interest of timeliness and affordability. URLs (Uniform Resource Locators) and holdings information are updated on a regular basis by use of automated methods that save on staff costs.
