    Abstract
    Explores the newly emerging information discipline of records management, focusing on its current status in the UK where it is represented by a range of sector specific and general organizations for information professionals. While records management involves some skills and knowledge which are different from those already mastered by library and information professionals, there are significant overlaps in terms of cataloguing, classification, indexing, identifying and meeting user needs and the challenge of dealing with information in electronic form. Concludes that, in the changing and sometimes shrinking market of of some of the more traditional library sectors, records management may offer the opportunity for information professionals to develop or shift their career path while remaining within the discipline of information management

    Abstract
    Describes the development, funding and staffing of the Information Literacy Program (ILP) at the Mantor Library at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF). The programme aims at helping both UMF students and community patrons to understand better how and where to look for information. Instruction takes place in an electronic classroom equipped with 21 computers running campus-standard Web-browsers and word processing; the instructor's station can control all of the computers in the classroom, or the instructor may pass or share control with students.     Abstract
    Organizational restructuring at Western Kentucky University's Helm-Cravens Library resulted in the consolidation of the service points of the Science Library, Government Documents, and Reference into one centralized Reference Center. This created an environment of information overload and technostress for reference librarians. To help remedy this situation, a core knowledge for electronic reference services for all reference desk personnel was established and a new training programme was implemented. All staff who serve at the reference desk were surveyed to determine which electronic resources should become part of the core electronic knowledge. The results of this survey are tabulated.     Abstract
    The community of catalogers (defined as "those who work with you") plays a relatively small role in the formal education process. It plays a greater role in training as new hires talk to their new colleagues, subscribe to electronic discussion lists (especially focused lists such as the Passport for Windows list, LCWeb, AUTOCAT, etc.) and become involved in professional associations, cooperative projects, etc. Its greatest role, however, is in the area of informal continuing education. That is especially true for electronic discussion lists such as AUTOCAT. Such lists fill a gap in the education/training continuum: how to find quick, specific answers to questions when your library lacks either the personnel or print or electronic resources to provide them. They extend the community of catalogers from those who work with you to the entire world.

    Abstract
    Studies have revealed that LIS programs of the four library schools in Saudi Arabia are traditional and their cataloging courses do not cover new trends and issues in the organization of information. As a result, graduates of these schools lack the required skills for various cataloging positions, especially in an electronic library environment. Once hired, they need to embark on a continuing education program to develop these skills. The paper aims to review continuing education programs for catalogers offered by various library schools, human resource development institutions, automation vendors, and professional associations in Saudi Arabia. Several other continuing education opportunities available to catalogers, such as Web-based training, professional reading, and electronic discussions lists, are also discussed.

    This paper presents the situation of library education in Peru during the last decades of the 20th Century, particularly dealing with education in the area of cataloging and bibliographic control. Both an historical view and the current situation are explained to give a general panorama of education in the areas of cataloging, classification, organization of electronic materials, cataloging networks, and the like. Also a short panorama of the near future is given. At the same time not only professional education is presented, but also non professional, continuing and on the job education in library and information science (LIS) in Peru.

    Reports and examines the results of a brief survey of records management training and education in some 26 countries and covering 79 institutions, conducted across the Internet in 1997 by researchers from the Archives and Records Management Programme at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth. Looks at the nees for records management training and education worldwide, and the emergence of the topic as a subset of information management, with an acknowledged impact on the systematic and efficient management of organizations. Suggests the focus of records management has shifted over the recent past from archival management of unwanted documents, to the management of electronic systems, giving records managers equal standing with other professionals in the information management field. Compares records management training in Malaysia and the UK, emphasizing that visiting consultants cannot be a substitute for courses based in universities. The survey revealed there is no standard approach to the training provided by these institutions: some are likely to reflect their archival origins, whilst others represent various streams of information studies

The authors surveyed the membership of the AUTOCAT electronic discussion group to determine how librarians learn the theory and practice of authority control and catalog maintenance; strategies that would make authority control easier to learn; levels of educational responsibility involved for the library schools, individual librarians and their employers; and how librarians value authority control. The survey results show that an ongoing collaboration among librarians, employers and educators is needed to refine and simplify the process of authority control education.

    Abstract
    Since Library Science Education started in Nigeria about half a century ago, cataloguing has been regarded as a core subject in the curriculum. With the diversification of subjects, some core subjects were made electives. This did not affect cataloguing. Nigerian Libraries have not gone far in electronic data processing in their storage of data and information and as a result, libraries are still manual-oriented. Even though some libraries in Cross River State of Nigeria have taken their first steps towards automation, the library schools still find it necessary to continue to drill students in traditional cataloguing. The question of the relevance of cataloguing in an automated library system arises and this researcher investigates the hypothesis that cataloguing is still relevant in the library school curriculum using the descriptive survey methodology. The finding is that the manual system will continue to be used for a long time and so cataloguing will continue to be relevant even with the computer-produced catalogue.

    Abstract
    This paper identifies six major challenges facing the information profession as the "information society" emerges: assisting users to deal with information overload; the high level of technical skills required to manage the new information and communication technologies; the competition with other professions for the management positions in converged library, information, and computing services; the need to incorporate a broader range of knowledge and skills, drawn from those traditionally seen as separate sectors of the information industry such as publishing; the need to develop a higher level of skills in teaching and facilitating the use of information; and the need for a greater ability to work with other people. It points to some solutions which have been adopted by schools of librarianship in the UK, many of them involving collaboration with other disciplines to produce the required depth of knowledge. It also calls for changes in the schools' approach to teaching, learning, and research, and in the practitioner community's support for education in general and continuing professional development in particular. Finally, it points to the dangers of inertia.
