    Abstract
In an attempt to determine whether further research and discussion is justified in the area of the description of reproductions of previously existing works, this project estimated what proportion of a research library's collection existed in multiple physical manifestation throughout the bibliographical universe. Between a fifth and a third (21-32 %) of the sampled collection was found to be in multiple manifestation. There was less diversity of media in multiple manifestations than expected: 13% of the manifestations identified were microforms, 3.4% were in other media. Seventy-five percent of those works found in multiple manifestation had only one other manifestation identified; the largest number of multiple manifestations identified for one work was 83.

    Abstract
In subject cataloging of audiovisual materials generic terms like 'documentary' or 'absolute film' facilitate the work of users and librarians. On the concrete level the study shows 4 ways to make a list of generic terms for the application in general libraries. The heuristic function of the study is to offer methods towards the solution of problems in the field of subject cataloguing of non-book materials. (1) The formal subject heading in library science corresponds to generic terms; Anglo-American and German rules for subject cataloging, however, provide no list that is directly applicable. (2) The terminology of institutions administering many audiovisual documents has been examined; general libraries have to find a common denominator with medium depth of classification and balanced representation of fiction and nonfiction terms. (3) From encyclopedic definitions of generic terms 8 dimensions have been extracted characterizing the terms in question individually. (4) The contribution of communication science has been discussed explaining a research project

    Abstract
The growing interest in end user or direct patron access to on-line bibliographic databases is reviewed with references to online catalogues, databases, and CD-ROMs. The literature of end user searching is surveyed with notes on: user training, software search aids, end user services in libraries: characterisation of end user searches; the role of librarians; and CD-ROMs as end user media

    Abstract
The efficiency of the role operators of PRECIS may be studied from two viewpoints - quantitative as well as qualitative. The frequency of appearance of different role operators in an input string may be taken as a measure of such quantitative parameters of efficiency. The scope of this paper lies in measuring the efficiency of role operators through their frequency of appearances in input strings. Most of the earlier research on PRECIS focused either on its general descriptions or its application to various subjects, media, languages, institutions, countries and to any regional/national/international information exchange network. No work has so far been reported which makes a quantitative evaluation of the system through its role operators except some general evaluative studies against different subject fields

    Abstract
The Commision of the European Communities has commissioned a feasibility study for a European Register of Microform Masters (EROMM), the purpose of which is to investigate the desirability and feasability of a community-wide register, to propose possible methodologies of compilation, storage and dissemination and to make estimates of costs. The long-term objective of EROMM is to create a union list of records available in collaborating libraries throughout the countries of the European Community, but it is important to recognise that EROMM is a project for the creation of a data base, not for the creation of films or other surrogate media.

    Abstract
The challenge facing the library profession is not only to learn how to identify information needs, but also to create new services and reshape existing service delivery patterns around them. Provides a brief examination of the literature of information needs and information seeking behaviour. Examines problems arising from meeting information needs in an electronic age, and describes a few societal changes that directly affect the way libraries attempt to meet information needs. Emphasises that the challenge of the 1990s is to design research that will help librarians and the information systems with which they work to anticipate a wide range of information needs.

    Abstract
A new cataloging and information access tool for children's media is proposed, which combines the most useful aspects of library subject-headings lists and thesauri with some unique aspects, and meets for the first time the American Library Association recommen-dations for the subject cataloging of juvenile materials. Computer-based production of such a tool offers considerable economies and opportunities. A project is now under way to produce such a listing

    Abstract
School library media specialists do not know which search strategies are most appropriate for the new full-text CD-ROM databases. Reports an experiment conducted to examine the effectiveness of 2 search strategies - analytical and browse strategies - for information seeking and use among high school students using an electronic full-text ancyclopedia for the search task. The experiment sought to determine whether: a short training session in a particular information strategy allows an information seeker to form an adequate mental model of the search task; and a simple 'browse' model compare favourably with a more 'analytical' model for information seeking in a full-text online environment. Both strategies proved effective for finding relevant information yet each demonstrated distinct advantages and disadvantages. Recommends that as new technologies are introduced, school library media specialists should conduct careful observations and controlled comparisons of how students use these systems

    Abstract
Media didactics have recently become more firmly grounded in cognitive theory, with an increasing concern for the internal processes of knowledge representation and acquisition. With this cognitive aspect in mind, an international group of researches held a meeting in Tübingen to present and discuss the theoretical approaches to an empirical investigation of knowledge acquisition from text and pictures

    Abstract
As an illustration of the general concern about how bibliographic records for graphic materials can be integrated most effectively with records for works in other media, this article presents problems associated with applying existing AACR2 guidelines for choice of entry. Characteristics of original items and historical collections of pictures, the role of corporate bodies in creating such materials, and the degree to which AACR2 provisions for entry under the heading for a corporate body accommodate these features are examined. Recommendations regarding extending AACR2 Rule 21.1B2 and, more generally, regarding the need to examine the meaning and objectives of integrating bibliographic records for various media and actors affecting this process, are made.

    Abstract
This paper reports on the successful introduction of a sophisticated online catalogue system at the library of the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, using the Muscat program package. The system provides to both end-users and library staff a choice between boolean searching on keywords and access using relevance feedback based on free text in English, mixed with UDC classification numbers. The system is implemented on an IBM 3084 computer. Significant benefits from the application of relevance feedback are reported with 10,000 records on file.
