    Abstract
Reviews studies showing that multimedia may be able to help people learn more information more quickly compared to traditional classroom lectures. Redundant multimedia does not always improve learning compared to monomedia. Specific situations in which multimedia information may help people to learn include: when the media encourage dual coding of information, when the media support one another, and when the media are presented to learners with low prior knowledge or aptitude in the domain being learned. Specific multimedia can be used to help people learn specific kinds of information

    Abstract
Addresses the issues of information seeking behaviour within the context of an information poor lifestyle, i.e. one in which the mass media are not viewed as providers of useful information and in which there is a parsimony of helpful interpersonal channels. Examines knowledge gap theory and concludes that, although the mass media are perceived as sources of information for some (the 'media rich'), they do not respond to the needs of the poor. Unfortunately, the role that interpersonal sources might play in this process have not been adequately addressed by knowledge gap researchers

Summarizes the different knowledge transfer practices that will dominate besiness and organizations in the next few years. Discusses cyberspace and the trend towards virtualization and sets out the differences between data, information, knowledge, intelligence, and wisdom. Describes the context of external cyberspace and the Internet, and dealing with a surplus of information. Discusses internal cyberspace and the use of forums, and addresses the question of the virtualization of paper based information centres

    Abstract
For decades, we have been told we live in the "information age"-a time when disruptive technological advancement has reshaped the categories and social uses of knowledge and when quantitative assessment is increasingly privileged. Such methodologies and concepts of information are usually considered the provenance of the natural and social sciences, which present them as politically and philosophically neutral. Yet the humanities should and do play an important role in interpreting and critiquing the historical, cultural, and conceptual nature of information. This book is one of two companion volumes that explore theories and histories of information from a humanistic perspective. They consider information as a long-standing feature of social, cultural, and conceptual management, a matter of social practice, and a fundamental challenge for the humanities today. Bringing together essays by prominent critics, Information: Keywords highlights the humanistic nature of information practices and concepts by thinking through key terms. It describes and anticipates directions for how the humanities can contribute to our understanding of information from a range of theoretical, historical, and global perspectives. Together with Information: A Reader, it sets forth a major humanistic vision of the concept of information.

    Abstract
Examines the challenge for librarians presented with members of the public wanting to make use of the Internet, who may anticipate that finding information on the WWW is a relative straightforward matter. Looks at the kind of guidance needed in using both the Windows operating system and Web browsers. Points out that users will have to learn how to cope with the frustrations inherent to the current realities of the Internet, and specific problems such as the need for absolute precision when entering Web addresses. Reference interviews may be required to determine whether the Web is the best source for the information sought in a particular instance, to help formulate appropriate search strategies, and evaluate and present the information that users retrieve

    Abstract
The paper proposes a four-level architecture for the cognitive apparatus of ... systems, addresses the handling of nested time scales, tries a first step towards ... approximation of consciousness as a linear abstract control channel within a ... architecture, and describes a number of interplays between an intuitive (sub...) symbolic level of information processing. Furthermore, concrete models, ... model of the environment, partner model, and Eigenmodel of a system are discussed ... comments to test beds are included, as are hints to the project AMOS at FAW ... some of the topics discussed within a platform-based realization, particularly between subsymbolic and symbolic forms of information processing

    Abstract
Our work addresses the issue of symbol grounding in natural language processing using notions from psycholinguistics, neurophysiology and cognitive psychology. Our main idea is to inspire ourselves from several aspects of the way a child learns meanings of words. We consider that, from a natural language processing viewpoint, to learn meanings implies to model a subject and to use dynamic representations. We have realized a computational system which can build a network of semantic proximity between word meanings from textual corpora. This network is related to another one which memories what stands for experience in our model

    Abstract
Purpose - Describes the basic premises of three metatheories that represent important or emerging perspectives on information seeking, retrieval and knowledge formation in information science: constructivism, collectivism, and constructionism. Design/methodology/approach - Presents a literature-based conceptual analysis. Pinpoints the differences between the positions in their conceptions of language and the nature and origin of knowledge. Findings - Each of the three metatheories addresses and solves specific types of research questions and design problems. The metatheories thus complement one another. Each of the three metatheories encourages and constitutes a distinctive type of research and learning. Originality/value - Outlines each metatheory's specific fields of application.

    Abstract
This article addresses the question "what is information?" by comparing the meaning of the term "information" and epistemological assumptions of three theories in library and information science: the "Shannon-Weaver model," Brookes' interpretation of Popper's World 3, and the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom model. It shows that the term "information" in these theories refers to empirical entities or events and is conceptualized as having causal powers upon human minds. It is argued that the epistemological assumptions have led to the negligence of the cultural and social aspects of the constitution of information (i.e., how something is considered to be and not to be information) and the unquestioned nature of science in research methodologies.
