    Abstract
An approach to accessing databases, which makes extensive use of structured thesaurus views for presenting and searching a large bibliographic database through progressive refinement, is being investigated in a research project which is seeking to apply usability criteria as the determinant for interface design. It aims to investigate measurements of retrieval performance in an application of graphical user interface techniques using multi-windowed layered attribute value aggregation, including those provided by a structured thesaurus, to access bibliographic databases. This paper reports on the progress made in the first year of the project of the application of usability methodologies, the revision of a preliminray design and the resulting prototype development. Implications for more widespread applications are discussed

    Abstract
Reports a survey conducted in April 1997 of 136 Japanese WWW and Telnet OPACs from the persepctive of their functions and user interfaces. These included: types of searchable files; access points; kinds of displays; login commands; search methods; Boolean operation; help functions; search history; and browsing of indexed terms. Results indicate a sharp rise in the number of WWW OPACs and problems with the provision of functions and user interfaces by Japanese WWW OPACs

    Abstract
Although several attempts have been made to devise simplified shelf arrangements for children, little consideration has been given to developing a simplified automated library catalogue. At Denver Public Library in the USA a catalogue has been devised enabling users to search via graphical symbols. Results of research into children's use of library catalogues was used as a basis for creating the system. Librarians must be prepared to re-examine how far existing systems meet the needs of their users

    Abstract
The application of classification schemes and thesauri to improve online information retrieval can be traced back to the beginnings of online searching itself, but the true potential for using knowledge structures in the user interface has yet to be realized. View-based searching seeks to exploit the classified arrangements in thesauri and existing classification schemes to improve the performance of such systems. HIBROWSE for EMBASE is a system which demonstrates the power of applying an approach to information retrieval which is strongly related to faceted classification. It does this by employing a point a click user interface with mutually constraining views utilising knowledge structure hierarchies for both query specification and the presentation of results. The relevance of this approach to library OPACs is discussed in the context of the digital library, concluding that out legacy of research in classification and indexing is more relevant than ever in the design of systems to cope with the problems of information access

    Abstract
This paper reports on usability evaluation that was carried out to evaluate the LRM-based prototype interface, presented in Part 1. A combination of focus group, Wizard of Oz method, and think-aloud protocol was used. The study was conducted in May 2019 with seven Slovenian catalogers from Maribor Public Library. Although participants had some difficulties understanding the LRM model, the user interface proved to be quite easy to use, quick to understand, and transparent. The functionality of the proposed prototype proved to be adequate, since the catalogers successfully and independently completed all the tasks without major problems and errors.

    Abstract
The Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) is an information retrieval system characterized by short bibliographic records, mainly of books, journals, and audiovisual materials available in a particular library. This, coupled with a Boolean search interface and a heterogeneous user population with diverse needs, presents special problems for subject searching by end users. To perform effective subject searching in the OPAC system requires a wide range of knowledge and skills. Various approaches to improving the OPAC design for subject searching have been proposed and are reviewed in this entry. The trend toward Web-based OPAC interfaces and the developments in Internet and digital library technologies present fresh opportunities for enhancing the effectiveness of the OPAC system for subject searching.

    Abstract
A common user interface replaces the multiple interfaces found among individual electronic library resources, reducing the time and effort spent by the user in both searching and learning to use a range of databases. Although the primary function of a common user interface is to simplify the search process, such products can be holistic solutions designed to address requirements other than searching, such as user authentication and site branding. This review provides a detailed summary of software currently on the market. The products reviewed were EnCompass, MetaLib, Find-It-All OneSearch, ZPORTAL, CPORTAL, InfoTrac Total Access, MetaFind, MuseSearch, SiteSearch, Single Search, Chameleon Gateway, and WebFeat.

    Abstract
Determines whether iconic interfaces might work with online public access catalogues (OPACs) and assesses problems which students encounter in using icons. Students from the Uk and France were asked to identify IBM, Mac and hand drawn icons and guess their functions. Mac icons were the easiest to identify and hand drawn icons were the least easy to identify. A number of students failed to guess the icon function second time round. Results suggest that an icon based OPAC interface could be polpular, but would require careful design, particularly for a multilingual interface

    Abstract
Presents a research project funded by the Spanish government and conducted by professors and students of library and information science, principally from the University of Granada, in collaboration with 2 organizations specializing in electronic information. The research group, 'Virtual reality interface for accessing electronic information', aims to define and develop a new interface for access to electronic information, with particular emphasis on the need for a 3-dimensional metaphor designed specially to improve inter-user communication and to facilitate browsing among great volumes of electronic information

    Abstract
Reports on the design of a GUI for the Okapi 'best match' retrieval system developed at the Centre for Interactive Systems Research, City University, UK, for online library catalogues. The X-Windows interface includes an interactive query expansion (IQE) facilty which involves the user in the selection of query terms to reformulate a search. Presents the design rationale, based on a game board metaphor, and describes the features of each of the stages of the search interaction. Reports on the early operational field trial and discusses relevant evaluation issues and objectives

    Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate the usability of a web-based OPAC (WebPAC) user interface at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). It also looks at the applicability of heuristic evaluation in designing a user-centered WebPAC interface. Design/methodology/approach - Based on Nielsen's ten usability heuristic principles, the study focuses on three heuristics only, i.e. aesthetic and minimalist design, match between interface and the real world, and visibility of interface status. Findings - Results of the study found that the WebPAC interface conforms to at least 70 percent usability properties prescribed. Usability problems violated in the interface were identified. Practical implications - The study suggests that heuristic evaluation is applicable in libraries to asses the usability of user interface for online catalogs. Originality/value - Heuristic evaluation could assist libraries in designing user-centered interface for online catalogs.
