    Abstract
    Understanding search behavior is important and leads to more effective interfaces that support searchers throughout the search process. In this article, through an observational user study, we investigate the search behavior of 15 visually impaired and 15 sighted searchers while they complete complex search tasks online. We study complex search tasks because they are challenging, cognitively intensive and affect performance of searchers. We compare the behavior of the two groups of searchers at four stages of the information-seeking process namely, Query Formulation, Search Results Exploration, Query Reformulation, and Search Results Management. For each stage, we identify research questions to investigate the impact of speech-based screen readers on the information-seeking behavior of visually impaired users. Significant differences were observed during query formulation and in the use of query-level support features such as query suggestions and spelling suggestions. In addition, screen-reader users submitted a lower number of queries and displayed comparatively limited exploratory behavior during search results exploration. We investigate how a lack of visual cues affected visually impaired searchers' approach towards query reformulation and observed different strategies to manage and use information encountered during the search process. We discuss the implications that our findings have for the design of search interfaces and propose a set of design guidelines to consider when designing interfaces that are usable and accessible with screen readers. This work also enhances our understanding of search behavior when using an auditory interface and could be useful when designing audio-based information retrieval systems.

    Abstract
    Granularity is a novel concept for presenting information in search result interfaces of hierarchical query-driven information retrieval systems in a manner that can support understanding and exploration of the context of the retrieved information (e.g., by highlighting its position in the granular hierarchy and exposing its relationship with relatives in the hierarchy). Little research, however, has been conducted on the effects of granularity of search results on the relevance judgment behavior of engineers. Engineers are highly motivated information users who are particularly interested in understanding the context of the retrieved information. Therefore, it is hypothesized that the design of systems with careful regard for granularity would improve engineers' relevance judgment behavior. To test this hypothesis, a prototype system was developed and evaluated in terms of the time needed for users to find relevant information, the accuracy of their relevance judgment, and their subjective satisfaction. To evaluate the prototype, a user study was conducted where participants were asked to complete tasks, complete a satisfaction questionnaire, and be interviewed. The findings showed that participants performed better and were more satisfied when the prototype system presented only relevant information in context. Although this study presents some novel findings about the effects of granularity and context on user relevance judgment behavior, the results should be interpreted with caution. For example, participants in this research were recruited by convenience and performed a set of simulated tasks as opposed to real ones. However, suggestions for further research are presented.

    Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of a number of human individual differences on the web searching of a sample of the general public. Design/methodology/approach - In total, 91 members of the general public performed 195 controlled searches. Search activity and ratings of search difficulty and success were recorded and statistically analysed. The study was exploratory, and sought to establish whether there is a prima facie case for further systematic investigation of the selection and combination of variables studied here. Findings - Results revealed a number of interactions between individual differences, the use of different search strategies, and levels of perceived search difficulty and success. The findings also suggest that the open and closed nature of searches may affect these interactions. A conceptual model of these relationships is presented. Practical implications - Better understanding of factors affecting searching may help one to develop more effective search support, whether in the form of personalised search interfaces and mechanisms, adaptive systems, training or help systems. However, the findings reveal a complexity and variability suggesting that there is little immediate prospect of developing any simple model capable of driving such systems. Originality/value - There are several areas of this research that make it unique: the study's focus on a sample of the general public; its use of search logs linked to personal data; its development of a novel search strategy classifier; its temporal modelling of how searches are transformed over time; and its illumination of four different types of experienced searcher, linked to different search behaviours and outcomes.

    Abstract
    The increasingly electronic environment in today's academic library is placing new demands on managing reference services. Staff are faced with selecting, implementing, and servicing a wide-range of services and resources. This necessitates learning the new and integrating it into the established. At the same time, users are becoming more varied. Not only is their demographic profile changing, but more users with interdisciplinary interests are seeking assistance. Reference librarians are also working to establish new interfaces with the increasing number of users who widh to access resources without coming into the library. This article addresses the management of reference services in a medium-sized research library to meet these needs. A model for planning reference services is presented along with a staff organizational structure to meet agreed upon objectives

    Abstract
    With the establishment of the WWW as a standard information tool in academic libraries, there is a greater demand for research assistance than ever before. Reference questions involve more teaching time given the number of interfaces clients confront as they navigate the book catalogue, electronic databases, and the WWW. Librarians require expert knowledge of multiple search strategies as well as the ability to teach others how to apply them effectively. Lossau: "Service-Gedanke Digitale Bibliotheken gehören heute bereits zum selbstverständlichen Vokabular von Bibliothekaren und es gibt wohl kaum einen Internetauftritt von Bibliotheken, der nicht eine Digitale Bibliothek beinhaltet. Fast ebenso vielfältig wie die Vorkommen sind auch die Ausprägungen und Definitionen von Digitalen Bibliotheken, weshalb man mit einer Mischung aus Interesse und Skepsis das vorliegende Buch in die Hand nimmt. »The ultimate digital library«, ein ambitionierter Titel, vom Autor und der American Library Association, in deren Reihe die Publikation erschienen ist, wohl nicht zuletzt aus Marketinggründen wohlbedacht gewählt, suggeriert dem Leser, dass hier die vollendete, perfekte Form einer Digitalen Bibliothek beschrieben wird, die sich seit den goer Jahren mit rasantem Tempo entwickelt hat. Es dauert eine ganze Weile, bis der Leser auf die Definition von Pace stößt, die sich als roter Faden durch sein Werk zieht: »The digital library - a comprehensive definition will not be attempted here - encompasses not only collections in digital form, but digital services that continue to define the library as a place.« (S.73) Pace konzentriert sich auf den ServiceAspekt von Digitalen Bibliotheken und zielt damit auf eine Entwicklung ab, die in der Tat als zukunftsweisend für Bibliotheken und Digitale Bibliotheken zu gelten hat. Zu lange haben Bibliotheken sich schwerpunktmäßig auf die digitalen Sammlungen und ihre Produktion (durch Digitalisierung) oder Kauf und Lizenzierung konzentriert, wie Pace zu Recht an der gleichen Stelle beklagt. Die Zukunft mussfür Bibliotheken in der Entwicklung und Bereitstellung von digitalen Services liegen, die den Endnutzern einen echten Mehrwert zu bieten haben. Darin liegt sein Verständnis einer ultimativen Digitalen Bibliothek begründet, ohne dass er die Definition ausführlicher thematisiert. Pace räumt in diesem Zusammenhang auch mit einem Mythos auf, der die Digitalen Bibliotheken lediglich als »Hilfsdienste« einer traditionellen Bibliothek betrachtet. Wesentlich sympathischer und realistischer erscheint dem Leser die folgende Charakterisierung des Verhältnisses: »The digital-traditional relationship is symbiotic, not parasitic: digital tools, services, and expertise exist to enhance the services and collections of libraries, not necessarily to replace them.« (S. 73) Kooperation mit SoftwareAnbietern Der inhaltliche Leitgedanke der digitalen Services ist auch eine ideale Basis für eine weitere Botschaft von Pace, die er mit seinem Buch vermitteln möchte: Bibliothekare und Anbietervon BibliotheksSoftware müssen bei der Entwicklung dieser Services eng zusammenarbeiten. Glaubt man dem Vorwort, dann stellt das Verhältnis von »libraries and vendors« [Bibliotheken und Anbietern] die Ausgangsthematik für die Publikation dar, wie sie von der American Library Association bei Pace in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Dieserverfügt offensichtlich über den geeigneten Erfahrungshintergrund, um eine solche Beschreibung abzuliefern. Nach seinem Studiumsabschluss als M.S.L.S. begann er seine berufliche Laufbahn zunächst für mehr als drei Jahre bei der Firma für Software zur Bibliotheksautomatisierung, Innovative Interfaces,woer unteranderem als Spezialist zur Produktintegration von z.B. WebPAC,Advanced Keyword Search arbeitete. Heute ist Pace »Head of Systems« an den North Carolina State University Libraries (Raleigh, N.C.) und ständiger Kolumnist in dem Magazin Computers in Libraries.
