    Abstract
As part of the study of human information search strategy, the concept of the search tactic, or move made to futher a search, is introduced. 29 search tactics are named, defined, and discussed in 4 categories: monitoring, file structure, search formulation, and term. Implications of the search tactics for research in search strategy are considered. The search tactics are inteded to be practically useful in information searching. This approach to searching is designed to be general, yet nontrivial; it is applicable to both bibliographic and reference searches and in both manual and on-line systems

    Abstract
Based on a probablistic model, proposes strategies for the initial search and an intermediate search. Retrieval experiences with the Cranfield collection of 1,400 documents show that this initial search strategy is better than conventional search strategies both in terms of retrieval effectiveness and in terms of the number of queries that retrieve relevant documents. The intermediate search is a useful substitute for a relevance feedback search. A cluster search would be an effective alternative strategy.

    Abstract
Examines statistical techniques for exploiting relevance information to weight search terms. These techniques are presented as a natural extension of weighting methods using information about the distribution of index terms in documents in general. A series of relevance weighting functions is derived and is justified by theoretical considerations. In particular, it is shown that specific weighted search methods are implied by a general probabilistic theory of retrieval. Different applications of relevance weighting are illustrated by experimental results for test collections

    Abstract
An information search tactic is a move made to further a search. In this article, 17 "idea tactics" are presented: tactics to help generate new ideas or solutions to problems in information searching. The focus of these tactics is psychological; they are intended to help improve the information specialist's thinking and creative processes in searching. The tactics are applicable to all kinds of situations - both bibliographical and reference searches, and in both manual and on-line systems. Research leads for the study of idea tactics are suggested, and experimental design problems associated with the testing of all sorts of search tactics are discussed

    Abstract
The aim of a document retrieval system is to issue documents which contain the information needed by a given user of an information system. The process of retrieving documents in response to a given query is carried out by means of the search patterns of these documents and the query. It is thus clear that the quality of this process, i.e. the pertinence of the information system response to the information need of a given user depends on the degree of accurary in which document and query contents are represented by their search patterns. It seems obvious that the weighting of descriptors entering document search patterns improves the quality of the the document retrieval process. A mathematical apparatus which takes into consideration, in a natural manner, the fact that the grades of importance of the descriptors in document search patterns are of the contimuum type, that is an apparatus adequate to the description of a retrieval system of documents indexed by weighted descriptors is - among known mathematical methods - the theory of fuzzy sets

    Abstract
A classified or clustered file is one where related or similar records are grouped into classes or clusters of items in such a way that all itmes within a cluster are jointly retrievable. Clustered files are easily adapted to to broad and narrow search strategies, and simple file updating methods are available. An inexpensive file clustering method applicable to large files is given together with appropriate file search methods
