    Abstract
This book is an essay on the epistemology of classifications. Its main purpose is not to provide an exposition of an actual mathematical theory of classifications, that is, a general theory which would be available to any kind of them: hierarchical or non-hierarchical, ordinary or fuzzy, overlapping or not overlapping, finite or infinite, and so on, establishing a basis for all possible divisions of the real world. For the moment, such a theory remains nothing but a dream. Instead, the authors are essentially put forward a number of key questions. Their aim is rather to reveal the "state of art" of this dynamic field and the philosophy one may eventually adopt to go further. To this end they present some advances made in the course of the last century, discuss a few tricky problems that remain to be solved, and show the avenues open to those who no longer wish to stay on the wrong track. Researchers and professionals interested in the epistemology and philosophy of science, library science, logic and set theory, order theory or cluster analysis will find this book a comprehensive, original and progressive introduction to the main questions in this field.

    Abstract
Interrelations of knowledge and ignorance are considered in connection with problems of classification, increase of parascientific investigations and incomplete world pictures. The tension between knowledge and ignorance can nevr be overcome, because knowledge is secondary, relative, particular and finite, while ignorance is primary, whole absolute, and infinite

    Abstract
An approach to establishing a relationship between knowing, informing and representing, using aspects of linguistic theory to clarify semantic theory as the basis for an overall theory of meaning. Linguistic knowledge is based on a conceptual matrix which defines convergence / divergence of the categories used to specify an object's parameters; work on the analysis of discourse emphasisis the social dimension of meaning, which is the basis of the theory of acts and speech. The evaluation criteria used to determine questions about the possibility of knowledge are necessarily decisive, this opens up promising perspectives if formulating a relationship between conceptual and pragmatic approaches

Presents the resutls of current research aimed at searching for the fiundation of the object oriented paradigm with formal ontology methods. Proposes an ontological foundation for the concept of object state and identity, showing formally the equivalence with the infinite properties which are inherent in the cognition of real world distinct entities

    Abstract
Library classification is constantly being influenced by multifaceted, multidimensional, and infinite growth of literature on one hand and the users needs on the other. Dewey pioneered in devising a scheme of classification for the documentation utility of the organised knowledge. Subsequent schemes of classification worked purely without any theoretical foundation, colon classification being the exception. With the emergence of computer technology the library classification is being metamorphised. This paper attempts to delve a state-of-the-art of library classification in the new computer age.

    Abstract
Current digital preservation is strongly biased towards data objects: digital files of document-style objects, or encapsulated and largely self-contained objects. To provide authenticity and provenance information, comprehensive metadata models are deployed to document information on an object's context. Yet, we claim that simply documenting an objects context may not be sufficient to ensure proper provenance and to fulfill the stated preservation goals. Specifically in e-Science and business settings, capturing, documenting and preserving entire processes may be necessary to meet the preservation goals. We thus present an approach for capturing, documenting and preserving processes, and means to assess their authenticity upon re-execution. We will discuss options as well as limitations and open challenges to achieve sound preservation, speci?cally within scientific processes.

    Abstract
As the universe of subjects is developing at an increasingly faster rate, the accomodation of new subjects has always been a problem for all classification schemes. Colon Classification, with its strong base provided by the 'dynamic theory of ever-growing universe of subjects', of which the 7th ed. is a cumulation, has tackled this problem at the conceptual level. The article seeks to describe how CC7 has tried to solve the problem on the Idea Plane and how the notational system could be made to admit an infinite number of newcomers without disturbing the infrastructure of the existing subjects. It is concluded that a theory-based scheme, like CC7, is more suited to cope with the accelerated proliferation of subjects than a non-theory-based scheme

    Abstract
The multimedia CD-ROM database, Compton's interactive encyclopedia, by Compton's NewMedia, incorporates virtual workspace: a new user interface that is based on Windows and enables searchers to research large amounts of data ba acting as a Windows shell to turn the boundaries of a computer screen into a nearly infinite working display. Users can extract information from a database and place it in a window on the computer screen's 'desktop' and the desktop can be scanned with a mouse, like a magnifying glass, moving from window to window. Notes other features of the database including: the SmarTrieve retrieval engine and the AudioVisual Interleave enhanced sound and animation capability

    Abstract
The publication of Ranganathan's Colon Classification (CC) in 1933 is a landmark in the evolution of classification theory. According to Ranganathan, all human knowledge is composed of a relatively few basic subjects (BS) which may be arranged, combined and interrelated in an infinite variety of ways. 7 editions of CC have so far appeared. Critically examines the development and treatment of basic subjects in the different editions. Whilst growth of BS has been almost stagnant in editions 1 to 6, in edition 7, there has been a considerable increase in the number of BS. Provides guidelines for future research on revisiong and improving the basic subjects without making radical changes

    Abstract
In the first part of this article the author defines the n-overlap vector whose coordinates consist of the fraction of the objects (e.g., books, N-grams, etc.) that belong to 1, 2, , n sets (more generally: families) (e.g., libraries, databases, etc.). With the aid of the Lorenz concentration theory, a theory of n-overlap similarity is conceived together with corresponding measures, such as the generalized Jaccard index (generalizing the well-known Jaccard index in case n 5 2). Next, the distributional form of the n-overlap vector is determined assuming certain distributions of the object's and of the set (family) sizes. In this section the decreasing power law and decreasing exponential distribution is explained for the n-overlap vector. Both item (token) n-overlap and source (type) n-overlap are studied. The n-overlap properties of objects indexed by a hierarchical system (e.g., books indexed by numbers from a UDC or Dewey system or by N-grams) are presented in the final section. The author shows how the results given in the previous section can be applied as well as how the Lorenz order of the n-overlap vector is respected by an increase or a decrease of the level of refinement in the hierarchical system (e.g., the value N in N-grams).
