    Abstract
At California State University Long Beach Library, the bulit-in programming language of dBase 3 Plus, was used to create a menu-drive interface for an automated ready-reference file. An easy-to-use in-house database requiring no dBase experience eo access was created. The database and all necessary programs can be stored on one low density disc and readily be shared

    Abstract
Reports results of a comparative study to correlate the handling of concepts and subject analysis in POOPSI and Colon Classification, 7th ed. with particular reference to fundamental categories and phase relations: Studies reveal that in both cases, the concept of Basic Class and Discipline must be indicated whether the Basic Class or Discipline is explicit or implicit in the title under consideration. Also reveals that Entity in POPSI many equate with Personality, Matter Material and Matter Property in CC7. Action of POPSI may correlate with Energy, Matter Property of CC7 and Property of POPSI may correlate with Matter Property of CC7

    Abstract
The Reference Expert is a computerised file containing reference problem questions and answers that can be used by staff on the reference desk. The data base was installed by the Reference Division of Texas A&M University's Sterling C. Evans Library to act as a collective memory for reference staff to find answers to infrequently asked difficult questions. The Reference Expert was built using INMAGIC version 7.1 free text indexing software and employs a worm disc for storage. Describes the file structure of records in the system, staff response, and problems encountered

    Abstract
Sometimes fielding reference queries over the Internet raises the possibility of professional misconduct and liability actions. Broadcasting questions over the Internet could often allow other parties to tap information at the expense of the original seeker. Recommends expanding the reference interview, asking clients for permission to use the Internet, considering third party interests and training for the network era

    Abstract
Describes the successful creation of a computerized ready reference file, at the reference desk at California State University at Long Beach, consisting of some of the most frequently asked reference questions. The original ready reference file was on 3 by 5 cards and the project to computerize the file was constrained by time necessitating the use of dBase 3 Plus database management software as the only such software immediately to hand. The system is easy to use and maintain, and uses dBase 3 Plus or dBase 4 software

    Abstract
A similarity-oriented approach for deriving reference values used in citation normalization is explored and contrasted with the dominant approach of utilizing database-defined journal sets as a basis for deriving such values. In the similarity-oriented approach, an assessed article's raw citation count is compared with a reference value that is derived from a reference set, which is constructed in such a way that articles in this set are estimated to address a subject matter similar to that of the assessed article. This estimation is based on second-order similarity and utilizes a combination of 2 feature sets: bibliographic references and technical terminology. The contribution of an article in a given reference set to the reference value is dependent on its degree of similarity to the assessed article. It is shown that reference values calculated by the similarity-oriented approach are considerably better at predicting the assessed articles' citation count compared to the reference values given by the journal-set approach, thus significantly reducing the variability in the observed citation distribution that stems from the variability in the articles' addressed subject matter.

    Abstract
Cartographic materials portray subject matter, focused on geographical area, with themes and cartographic forms as other facets of interest to users. Subject headings provide access to geographic areas and subject matter, both of which are significant to reference work and organization of map collections. This article focuses on the Library of Congress subject headings system, and its method of application for cartographic materials. Specific formats - including atlases, views, globes, charts and digital maps - and typical problem areas - such as geographic names, coastlines, boundary maps, ancillary maps, facsimiles, topographic quadrangles, and maps accompanying books - are discussed.

    Abstract
Describes Stumpers, an electronic listserv, or mailing list, on the Internet devoted to finding the answers to difficult reference questions. Begun in 1992, it now has over 700 subscribers. When a question is sent via e mail to Stumpers, it appears in all subscriber's e mail boxes; replies are likely within a day or two and sometimes arrive within a matter of hours. 50-100 questions and answers are exchanged daily

    Abstract
Survey on the activities going to develop the UDC into a fully faceted classification system according to the Recommendations of the UDC Management Board. A Master Reference File (MRF) has been created from which any publisher or insitution may develop its own versions according to the requests of its clientele. The UDC Technical Director at the FID Headquarters in The Hague maintains the file. An Editorial Board and an Editor in Chief was appointed. Extensions and Corrections are being published. Examples are given on ongoing revision work in the classes for Astronomy, Linguistics and Philology as well as in Medicine. Cooperation with the Editors of the Bliss Classification and the DDC exists
