    Abstract
Discusses the history of the development of thesauri and considers the feasibility of using them as a means for the description of knowledge systems. Contemporary computing technology makes it possible to compile highly effective thesauri, which can be used as a tool for the development of complex databases and knowledge systems

    Abstract
Presents a short review of fundamental knowledge representation methods: logical, graphical, structured and procedural notational schemes. Special attention is given to notational schemes' classifications and the characteristics on which classifications were done. Knowledge representation is one of the central problems in artificial intelligence, but a complete theory of it does not exist, and it remains a set of methods that are used, with more or less success, in attempts to solve a given problem. The characteristics of knowledge schemes play a significant role

    Abstract
Examines and compares the existing systems for transliteration of Cyrillic characters, including the standard English transliteration system as well as the ISO, ANSI and BSI systems. Presents a proposal for a new computerised transliteration system which would make it possible to transliterate Cyrillic characters and, it required, convert the transliterated Latin characters into Cyrilic

    Abstract
The cognitive approach in the retrieval and communication of informatio, as well as in librarianship and information science gained importance in the 1970's. Today it is present in subject fields, as well as in studies of users, and aspects of information work. It has generated the formation of the cognitve paradigm, in many scientific disciplines. In the framework of Kuhn's concept of paradigm, it is evident that librarianship and information science are on the pre-paradigmatic level. However, some authors mention the existence of at least 2 paradigms in library and information science, the physical and the cognitive. Presents a historical overview of the cognitive oriented research works of Brookes, De Mey, Belkin, Ingwersen and others to provide an insight into the development of library and information science thought

    Abstract
The information requirements for library users can only be met if individual information systems are compatible, i.e. based on the use of a single information language. Points out that natural language is the best instrument for integration of information systems. Presents a model of the strucutre of natural language, extended by metaknowledge elements which makes it possible to analyse and represent text without the need for syntax analysis

    Abstract
Reports on the development of an algorithm which has been used to compile a comprehensive dictionary of Russian homonyms i.e. words with several meanings. The word 'lay' can serve as an example of an English homonym: it is either a verb in its own right (to lay) or the preterite of the verb 'to lie'. The compiled dictionary has been used to identify the existing individual types of homonyms

    Abstract
The multidimensional language model, as describes in a previous paper (1998, no.2), makes it possible to define a number of concepts, including denotation and signification. Shows that the 'classical semantic triangle', which is commonly used to express denotation and signification, does not contradict the principles of the model. Concludes that the multidimensional language model is a truly universal tool reflecting accurately both semantics and syntax

    Abstract
Library catalogues have existed for centuries, but only in recent times have attempts been made to evaluate their effectiveness as finding tools. Librarians want to know how well the catalogue performs, how it is used and with what success, and its major problems and limitations. Discusses evaluation of library catalogues from the users' point of view and describes the functions of the catalogue, methods for evaluation and their characteristics

    Abstract
The Slovak Scientific and Technical Information Centre is the official distributor of the CDS/ISIS library automation package in Slovakia. Discusses the use of the system which has at present over 500 registered users, although not all of them have the latest version and, consequently, cannot take advantage of all its features. Presents a brief description of the package and draws attention to some of the additional modules which, for example, make it possible to convert the database format of the data into the ISO 2709 format or UNIMARC format

    Abstract
Information technology has brought with it the problem of protecting authors' rights related to copyrighted works on electronic media. Describes a new system of labelling copyrighted works on the Internet, called DOI, developed in the USA. At the presentation at the bookfair in Frankfurt, 250.000 works were leabelled with DOI. The system is universal and enables the inclusion of current standard identifiers (ISBN, ISSN, SICI). The fact that a DOI identifier stays 'glued on' forever, makes the identification of the carrier of copyright possible at any moment. The DOI system presents the infrastructure system for trading in and use of copyrighted works over the Internet in the third millennium
