    Abstract
Presents a survey and discussion on signature-based text retrieval methods. It describes the main idea behind the signature approach and its advantages over other text retrieval methods, it provides a classification of the signature methods that have appeared in the literature, it describes the main representatives of each class, together with the relative advantages and drawbacks, and it gives a list of applications as well as commercial or university prototypes that use the signature approach

    Abstract
Defends the role of quality cataloguing. It is only with adequate records that users will be able to find the information they require. It is a prerequisite for efficient machine retrieval and integrated services. Quality MARC records and the intellectual structure of cataloguing are essential is standards of service are to be maintained

    Abstract
Z39.50 is an information retrieval protocol. It has generated much interest but is so far little deployed in UK systems and services. Gives a functional overview of the protocol itself and the standards background, describes some European initiatives which make use of it, and outlines various issues to do with its future use and acceptance. Z39.50 is a crucial building block of future distributed information systems but it needs to be considered alongside other protocols and services to provide useful applications

    Abstract
This is a report on how Doyle and others made a faceted classification scheme for content management systems and made it browsable on the web (see CMS Review in Example Web Sites, below). They discuss why they did it, how, their use of OPML and XFML, how they did research to find terms and categories, and they also include their taxonomy. It is interesting to see facets used in a business environment.

    Abstract
The development of excellent reference skills is an art, and requires skill. Knowledge of how reference works are organised and work is of utmost importance. The librarian is also required to appreciate and understand user needs. It is necesary to solicit the real uestion, which often is not the one asked.

    Abstract
On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups. It was felt that training sessions should be organised and a network created for the exchange of ideas

Suggests that libraries are nodes in a communal network fulfilling the task of pathfinder, providing information, transferring knowledge, fostering cultural heritage and providing areas for communications and social integration

    Abstract

    Abstract
Examines several contextual factors relating to IT and organizational structure in private and public organizations. They include organization size; finance and accounting for IT; and management roles and responsibilities. A Questionnaire survey was sent to a random sample of public and private sector organizations ranging from local authorities, NHS trusts, banks, building societies and manufacturing firms. preliminary findings suggests that organizational restructuring is often implemented through ad hoc managerial strategies triggered by financial imparatives. Whilst IT plays a part in the restructuring process, complex environmental and internal influences on organization structure and IT make over generalizations highly problematic. This is irrespective of the sector in which the organization operates
