    Abstract
The categorial approach was formulated by Ranganathan in the 1930s in his Colon Classification and its conceptual and theoretical basis was laid down in his Prolegomena. This view influenced significantly the search for a new approach to knowledge organization that would overcome the rigidity and limitations of enumerative models. The categorical approach or the facet-analytical approach has since become the single most predominant approach in knowledge organization leading to the development of a number of special classification schemes for micro-subjects, new general classification schemes such as BSO (and revision of existing schemes, e.g. BC2), indexing systems such as PRECIS and POPSI, revision and / or development of controlled vocabularies to conform to the faceted approach, emergence of new tools such as the Thesaurofacet and Classaurus, and in recent years, facet analysis has even been used in website design. This paper explores some schemas and raises a few questions as to the relevance of these in the digital environment.

    Abstract
The scholarly community is increasingly employing the Web both for publication of scholarly output and for locating and accessing relevant scholarly literature. Organization of this vast body of digital information assumes significance in this context. The sheer volume of digital information to be handled makes traditional indexing and knowledge representation strategies ineffective and impractical. It is, therefore, worth exploring new approaches. An approach being discussed considers the intrinsic semantics of texts of documents. Based on the hypothesis that noun phrases in a text are semantically rich in terms of their ability to represent the subject content of the document, this approach seeks to identify and extract noun phrases instead of single keywords, and use them as descriptors. This paper presents a methodology that has been developed for extracting noun phrases from Portuguese texts. The results of an experiment carried out to test the adequacy of the methodology are also presented.

    Abstract
Gives operational definitions of work, associated work, composite work and other selected terms. Mentions the challenges posed by the abundant availability of digital resources in different media, forms and formats to catalogers in particular and information professionals in general. Discusses with examples the applicability and adequacy of the rules and prescriptions of ISBD(ER) and AACR2, 1998 rev. for cataloging multimedia resources on CD, in view of the fact that the record medium, the physical form and format affect the effectiveness of accessing, retrieval and use of a work.

    Abstract
This paper briefly traces the history of library education in India and examines the status of bibliographic organization and control in the country as a major factor influencing the nature and content of courses in knowledge organization. The two basic documents from the University Grants Commission - the first one issued in 1965 and the recent one in 2001 - that have influenced university level course contents have been examined. Finally, the nature of changes that are being brought about in recent years in some universities has been highlighted.

    Abstract
Not much progress has been made in India regarding bibliographic databases of materials in Indian languages in the languages and scripts of the original items. Major projects include: machine readable version of the National Bibliography of Literature; Tamil collection of the roja Muthiah Research Library in Chennai; and the collection of the Department of Indology of EFEO. Discusses the use of Indian language scripts in designing language databases, and some issues relating to multilingual databases and thesauri, and language compatibility. There is a need for developing multilingual thesauri in Indian languages
