Both Deegan and Tanner bring a wide array of experience and knowledge to the work creating a valuable resource for librarians and digital collection managers. The book is the first in what the authors hope will become a series of volumes covering various issues of digital futures. Digital Futures: Strategies for the Information Age contains nine main chapters divided into sections, an introduction, a conclusion, a bibliography, a glossary, and an index. Each chapter begins with a quote or two and an introduction to help set the stage for the rest of the chapter. The first chapter, "Digital Futures in Current Context," outlines the myriad of changes in information technology from the past 50 years and the impact of those changes an libraries, library practices, and publishing. The book is written for people with little or no prior knowledge of information technology, so technologically savvy readers may find the first chapter a little elementary. For instance, the chapter includes a good bit of the history and workings of the Internet and World Wide Web. However, without the chapter included in the text, the work world lack a real starting point for the narrative and possibly alienate readers just starting their voyage into information science. The second chapter, "Why Digitize?" discusses why libraries and librarians should consider digital projects as a means of providing access. While the concentration is an the benefits of digital projects, the authors are also careful to point out various pitfalls and stumbling blocks to creating, managing, and preserving a digital collection. To help demonstrate their point, the authors include examples of a number of active projects covering newspapers, photo collections, books, and periodicals, and provide URLs so readers can visit the projects an their own. This chapter gives the reader a good overview of the various issues surrounding digitization as well as practical examples. While the first two chapters are a good introduction to the subject and examine theoretical issues, the next two chapters begin take an more practical issues. In Chapter Three, "Developing Collections in the Digital World," and four, "The Economic Factors," the authors explore how digital collections work with traditional library collecfions and how collection development for digital resources differs from collection development of non-digital resources. One of the most interesting topics of these chapters covers the issues surrounding serials using JSTOR and Project MUSE as examples. E-books and their impact an libraries is also discussed. The remaining chapters are by far the most timely and important parts of the work. Chapter Five, "Resource Discovery, Description and Use," examines the growing area of metadata and its importance for libraries and librarians. The chapter begins with a look at how the World Wide Web works and the problems with search engines and then evolves into a discussion of what metadata is, the types of metadata, and metadata creation. The authors explain that one of the biggest problems with the World Wide Web is that the construction and description of web pages is imprecise. The solution for bettering retrieval is metadata.
    The most common definition for metadata is "data about data." What metadata does is provide schemes for describing, organizing, exchanging, and receiving information over networks. The authors explain how metadata is used to describe resources by tagging item attributes like author, title, creation date, key words, file formats, compression, etc. The most well known scheme is MARC, but other schemes are developing for creating and managing digital collections, such as XML, TEI, EAD, and Dublin Core. The authors also do a good job of describing the difference between metadata and mark-up languages like HTML. The next two chapters discuss developing, designing, and providing access to a digital collection. In Chapter Six, "Developing and Designing Systems for Sharing Digital Resources," the authors examine a number of issues related to designing a shared collection. For instance, one issue the authors examine is interoperability. The authors stress that when designing a digital collection the creators should take care to ensure that their collection is "managed in such a way as to maximize opportunities for exchange and reuse of information, whether internally or externally" (p. 140). As a complement to Chapter Six, Chapter Seven, "Portals and Personalization: Mechanisms for End-user Access," focuses an the other end of the process; how the collection is used once it is made available. The majority of this chapter concentrates an the use of portals or gateways to digital collections. One example the authors use is MyLibrary@NCState, which provides the university community with a flexible user-drive customizable portal that allows user to access remote and local resources. The work logically concludes with a chapter an preservation and a chapter an the evolving role of librarians. Chapter Eight, "Preservation," is a thought-provoking discussion an preserving digital data and digitization as a preservation technique. The authors do a good job of relaying the complexity of preservation issues in a digital world in a single chapter. While the authors do not answer their questions, they definitely provide the reader wich some things to ponder. The final chapter, "Digital Librarians: New Roles for the Information Age," outlines where the authors believe librarianship is headed. Throughout the work they stress the role of the librarian in the digital world, but Chapter Nine really brings the point home. As the authors stress, librarians have always managed information and as experienced leaders in the information field, librarians are uniquely suited to take the digital bull by the horns. Also, the role of the librarian and what librarians can do is growing and evolving. The authors suggest that librarians are likely to move into rotes such as knowledge mediator, information architect, hybrid librarian-who brings resources and technologies together, and knowledge preserver. While these librarians must have the technical skills to cope with new technologies, the authors also state that management skills and subject skills will prove equally important.

    Abstract
    Libraries have always been an inspiration for the standards and technologies developed by semantic web activities. However, except for the Dublin Core specification, semantic web and social networking technologies have not been widely adopted and further developed by major digital library initiatives and projects. Yet semantic technologies offer a new level of flexibility, interoperability, and relationships for digital repositories. Kruk and McDaniel present semantic web-related aspects of current digital library activities, and introduce their functionality; they show examples ranging from general architectural descriptions to detailed usages of specific ontologies, and thus stimulate the awareness of researchers, engineers, and potential users of those technologies. Their presentation is completed by chapters on existing prototype systems such as JeromeDL, BRICKS, and Greenstone, as well as a look into the possible future of semantic digital libraries. This book is aimed at researchers and graduate students in areas like digital libraries, the semantic web, social networks, and information retrieval. This audience will benefit from detailed descriptions of both today's possibilities and also the shortcomings of applying semantic web technologies to large digital repositories of often unstructured data.

They allow an additional definition of "sociotechnical" as "an analytical stance that privileges neither the social nor the technological and in which neither is reducible to the other". This is an important definition, as it is the foundation of the contributors' sociological approach to digital libraries, an approach not typical of the DL literature which still focuses "largely on the technology itself". Bishop et al. have two stated goals for this volume: 1.     This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, ECDL 2003, held in Trondheim, Norway in August 2003. Fast ebenso vielfältig wie die Vorkommen sind auch die Ausprägungen und Definitionen von Digitalen Bibliotheken, weshalb man mit einer Mischung aus Interesse und Skepsis das vorliegende Buch in die Hand nimmt. »The ultimate digital library«, ein ambitionierter Titel, vom Autor und der American Library Association, in deren Reihe die Publikation erschienen ist, wohl nicht zuletzt aus Marketinggründen wohlbedacht gewählt, suggeriert dem Leser, dass hier die vollendete, perfekte Form einer Digitalen Bibliothek beschrieben wird, die sich seit den goer Jahren mit rasantem Tempo entwickelt hat. Es dauert eine ganze Weile, bis der Leser auf die Definition von Pace stößt, die sich als roter Faden durch sein Werk zieht: »The digital library - a comprehensive definition will not be attempted here - encompasses not only collections in digital form, but digital services that continue to define the library as a place.« (S.73) Pace konzentriert sich auf den ServiceAspekt von Digitalen Bibliotheken und zielt damit auf eine Entwicklung ab, die in der Tat als zukunftsweisend für Bibliotheken und Digitale Bibliotheken zu gelten hat. Zu lange haben Bibliotheken sich schwerpunktmäßig auf die digitalen Sammlungen und ihre Produktion (durch Digitalisierung) oder Kauf und Lizenzierung konzentriert, wie Pace zu Recht an der gleichen Stelle beklagt. Die Zukunft mussfür Bibliotheken in der Entwicklung und Bereitstellung von digitalen Services liegen, die den Endnutzern einen echten Mehrwert zu bieten haben. Darin liegt sein Verständnis einer ultimativen Digitalen Bibliothek begründet, ohne dass er die Definition ausführlicher thematisiert. Pace räumt in diesem Zusammenhang auch mit einem Mythos auf, der die Digitalen Bibliotheken lediglich als »Hilfsdienste« einer traditionellen Bibliothek betrachtet. Wesentlich sympathischer und realistischer erscheint dem Leser die folgende Charakterisierung des Verhältnisses: »The digital-traditional relationship is symbiotic, not parasitic: digital tools, services, and expertise exist to enhance the services and collections of libraries, not necessarily to replace them.« (S. 73) Kooperation mit SoftwareAnbietern Der inhaltliche Leitgedanke der digitalen Services ist auch eine ideale Basis für eine weitere Botschaft von Pace, die er mit seinem Buch vermitteln möchte: Bibliothekare und Anbietervon BibliotheksSoftware müssen bei der Entwicklung dieser Services eng zusammenarbeiten. Glaubt man dem Vorwort, dann stellt das Verhältnis von »libraries and vendors« [Bibliotheken und Anbietern] die Ausgangsthematik für die Publikation dar, wie sie von der American Library Association bei Pace in Auftrag gegeben wurde. Dieserverfügt offensichtlich über den geeigneten Erfahrungshintergrund, um eine solche Beschreibung abzuliefern. Nach seinem Studiumsabschluss als M.S.L.S. begann er seine berufliche Laufbahn zunächst für mehr als drei Jahre bei der Firma für Software zur Bibliotheksautomatisierung, Innovative Interfaces,woer unteranderem als Spezialist zur Produktintegration von z.B. WebPAC,Advanced Keyword Search arbeitete. Heute ist Pace »Head of Systems« an den North Carolina State University Libraries (Raleigh, N.C.) und ständiger Kolumnist in dem Magazin Computers in Libraries.
    Neue Herausforderungen angehen Die Publikation erhält ihre Bedeutung aus der mehrperspektivischen Betrachtung von Digitalen Bibliotheken und ihren Services. Der Untertitel »where the new information players meet« macht bereits deutlich, worin der Autor eine der größten Herausforderungen der Zukunft für Bibliotheken sieht: sie befinden sich im Wettbewerb mit anderen Playern im Informationsmarkt. Ausführlich beschreibt Pace auch die zukünftige Rolle von Anbietern im Bereich der Bibliothekssoftware, für sich und im Zusammenspiel mit Bibliotheken. Beide Parteien sollten auf geeigneten Feldern gemeinsam die Herausforderungen angehen, die durch das Erscheinen neuer Informationsanbieter für Bibliotheken und ihre traditionellen Softwarelieferanten entstanden sind. Pace bevorzugt zur Charakterisierung der Beziehung die Begriffe »codependence« und »codevelopment« (S.16), die ihm prägnanter erscheinen als nur »partnership«. Insbesondere die Kapitel 2 »Sizing up the dot-com competition« und 3 »Business challenges to library practices« beschreiben anhand von prägnanten Beispielen, wie solche Mitbewerber mit dem Aufkommen des Internets in den traditionellen Tätigkeitsbereich von Bibliotheken eingetreten sind. Google, Yahoo und Amazon sind heutzutage wohl die bekanntesten kommerziellen Service-Anbieter im Internet, die in kurzer Zeit eine unglaubliche Popularität und internationale Verbreitung erreicht haben. Pace geht aber auch auf Services wie das Open Directory Project ein (www.dmoz.org), in dem registrierte Fachleute nach einem kooperativen Klassifikationssystem ausgewählte Links auf Internetquellen zusammenstellen. Kommerzielle Dienstleister wie Ouestia, Ebrary oder XanEdu, die der Autor beschreibt, haben sich auf das Angebot digitaler Bücher im Internet spezialisiert und treten mit unterschiedlichen Geschäftsmodellen an Bibliotheken und Endnutzer direkt heran. Wenn auch die Oualität laut Pace nicht immer überzeugend ist, so sind Marketing, Geschäftsideen und Verkaufsmodelle doch durchaus einer näheren Betrachtung durch Bibliotheken wert. Pace rät den Bibliotheken, diese neuen Herausforderungen aktiv anzugehen und dabei einerseits von den Erfolgskonzepten eines Google-Dienstes, andererseits aber auch von den Geschäftsmodellen und Planungskonzepten der Privatwirtschaft zu lernen und geeignete Instrumentarien zu übernehmen. Besonders aufschlussreich ist für den Leser Kapitel 4 »Business models for digital library services«. Basierend auf einem Strategiepapier aus dem Jahre 2000, das durch zwei Vertreter der »Fakultät für Geschäftsmanagement« an der Heimatuniversität des Autors erstellt wurde, stellt Pace einige konkrete Prozessschritte aus dem privatwirtschaftlichen Bereich vor, die er in verschiedene Phasen untergliedert. Die Beschreibung ist durch klare Botschaften durchaus anschaulich gestaltet und auch der nicht ganz unbeschlagene Leser fühlt sich zur Reflektion eigener Vorgehensweisen angeregt, wenn er aufgefordert wird: »solve only known problems« (S.75).
    Digitale Auskunftsdienste Pace verfällt als Insider der Bibliotheks- und Firmenszene glücklicherweise nicht in das Stereotyp einer einfachen Schwarz-Weiß-Gegenüberstellung von »erfolgreichen Firmenkonzepten« einerseits und »unflexiblen, traditionsbelasteten Bibliotheken« andererseits, wie man sie nicht selten von Bibliothekskritikern hört. In den bereits genannten Kapiteln 2 und 3 sieht und benennt er durchaus nachahmenswerte Beispiele für digitale Servicesvon Bibliotheken, die auch Adaptionen von kommerziellen Diensten darstellen können. Digitale Auskunftsdienste (»Virtual or online reference services«) per E-Mail oder Chat erfreuen sich offenbar zumindest in den USA steigender Beliebtheit, die Pace unter anderem mit dem Wegfall der Hemmschwelle einer persönlichen Ansprache erklärt. OnlineKataloge erfahren zunehmend eine Anreicherung mit Informationen wie Inhaltsverzeichnissen oder Abstracts, wie sie von Amazon bekannt sind. Pace erwähnt auch lobend die Rolle einiger Öffentlicher Bibliotheken, die Yahoos Verbalerschließungssystem als Grundlage für eigene Internetservices genommen haben - und dafür von anderen Kollegen heftig gescholten werden. In dem Kontext der Gegenüberstellung von privatwirtschaftlich organisierten Diensten und öffentlich-rechtlichen Bibliotheken empfehlen sich die Kapitel 6 »Libraries are not ALL (sic!) business« und 7 »First principles« als lesenswert, weil sie sich explizit gegen eine unreflektierte Übernahme privatwirtschaftlicher Geschäftsregeln und -vorgehensweisen durch Bibliotheken aussprechen, auch wenn sich gänzlich neue Aspekte bei den gewählten Beispielen wie »fair use«, »privacy of end-users« aus bibliothekarischer Sicht nicht entdecken lassen. Entwicklung von Services Auch wenn Pace als amerikanischerAutor mit seinen Beispielen ein geographisch begrenztes Spektrum analysiert, so lassen sich viele Schlussfolgerungen doch ohne weiteres auch auf europäische Bibliotheken übertragen. Die vorliegende Publikation kann allen Bibliothekaren in leitenden Positionen sehr zur Lektüre empfohlen werden, da die Fokussierung auf die Entwicklung von Services sowie die Erörterung möglicher strategischer Partnerschaften auf der Agenda eines jeden Bibliotheksmanagements stehen sollte. Die Lektüre sollte allerdings in dem Bewusstsein erfolgen, dass Pace durch die Schwerpunktsetzung auf das Verhältnis »Bibliotheken - Anbieter von Informationstechnologie und -diensten« einige weitere wesentliche Aspekte weitgehend außer Acht lässt. Diese betreffen im Falle von Universitätsbibliotheken beispielsweise das Verhältnis von Bibliotheken als Dienstleistern zu weiteren lokalen Dienstleistern (insbesondere Rechenzentren, Medienzentren) sowie die zunehmende Modularität von Service- und Informationsarchitekturen, die ein nahtloses Zusammenspiel lokaler und externer Services sinnvoll erscheinen lassen. Die Orientierung an den tatsächlichen Bedürfnissen von EndNutzern steht zwar nicht direkt im Mittelpunkt der Service-Beschreibungen des Autors, einige wesentliche Aspekte werden aber behandelt (z.B. S.57). Weitere Zielgruppen der Publikation sind aufgrund der gewählten Thematik zu Digitalen Bibliotheken und Services sicherlich Bibliothekare in verantwortlichen Positionen in den Bereichen Informationstechnologie und Benutzung. Alle Bibliothekare, und insbesondere Berufsanfänger, mögen darüber hinaus mit Interesse die Ausführungen von Pace zu seinem beruflichen Werdegang sowie speziell das Kapitel 5 »Sheep in wolves' clothing/Working inside and outside the library« verfolgen, in dem er berufliche Chancen und Szenarien für Bibliothekare im IT-Firmenbereich beschreibt."

Was ist alles in diesem Kurs enthalten? Der erste Teil des Buches behandelt den Entscheidungsprozess, einen Online-Auskunftsdienst einzuführen: Es werden Vor- und Nachteile diskutiert, die Bedürfnisse der Benutzer untersucht ("There will always be a need for a human consultant to satisfy the needs of the information seeker.") und die Grundlagen der Entscheidungsfindung für eine geeignete Software behandelt. Der zweite Teil handelt dann von den Fragen der "Einrichtung" des virtuellen Auskunftsplatzes. Hier gibt es z.B. eine Schulung in den besonderen Kommunikationsformen, welche beim Chat zu beachten sind, eine Einbettung des neuen Dienstes in das Leitbild, die Geschäftsordnung bzw. Arbeitsorganisation der Bibliothek ("library policies") und zuletzt die komfortable Ausstattung des Auskunftsplatzes für Benutzer und Beschäftigte bis hin zu Fragen der Evaluation und Qualitätssicherung. Der dritte Teil behandelt die Aufgabe, einen Dienst zu implementieren, der sich selbst trägt, indem man ein Marketing für den neuen Dienst einrichtet, das ihn auf herkömmlichen und neuen Wegen promotet und ihn benutzerfreundlich ausgestaltet.

Daher verwundert nicht, dass die Popularisierung des Internet Bibliothekare und Bibliotheken frühzeitig dazu veranlasst hat, ihre Auskunftsdienstleistungen im Web anzubieten. Dies geschah zunächst durch organisierte Auskunft per E-Mail, später per Webformular und vor allem seit 2000/2001 verstärkt per Chat. Als zusammenfassende Bezeichnung für diese Varianten wird meist der Begriff digital reference verwendet. In den USA, aber auch in Australien, Großbritannien oder Skandinavien schenkt man dem Thema Digital Reference schon seit mehreren Jahren größte Aufmerksamkeit. Die Zahl der bislang dazu publizierten Fachaufsätze lag Ende 2003 bereits weit über 600, jährlich im November findet seit 1999 die »Digital Reference Conference« statt, und mit DIG_REF sowie LiveReference existieren zwei Diskussionslisten, die sich ausschließlich mit Fragen bibliothekarischer Auskunft im Internet beschäftigen. Im vergangenen Jahr sind in den USA allein vier umfangreiche Monographien zu Digital Reference erschienen, darunter das hier zu besprechende Werk von Anne Lipow. ... Gegenwärtig deutet sich an, dass das Thema Digital Reference, Online-Auskunft oder Auskunft per Chat in deutschen Bibliotheken auf mehr Interesse stößt als in den vergangenen Jahren.     Abstract
    This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 11th European Conference on Research and Advanced Technology for Digital Libraries, ECDL 2007, held in Budapest, Hungary, in September 2007.     Abstract
    This article seeks to address the following questions: Why do certain people, who are fully information literate with printed materials, become hesitant and even reluctant when it comes to finding something on the Internet? And why do we, information professionals, find it difficult to support them adequately? Mature users of digital information are often skeptical about the value of the Internet as a source for professional information. Over the years much has been achieved, but many prophecies of the experts on digitalization from the early hours still have not yet been fulfilled. Mature users do possess all skills needed to be digital-information literate, but they need to be assisted in specific areas where those skills are insufficient. They tend to blame themselves even if shortcomings in accessibility of digital sources and computer errors obstruct their search. Operating hardware requires a dexterity that can only be acquired by experience. Instruction should be hands-on; demonstration is far less effective. Special attention should be given to reading and interpreting navigation information on the screen and to the search strategies the Internet requires. Use of imagination and trial-and-error methods are to be recommended in this respect.

Janes not only provides the breadth of coverage expected in an introduction, but also depth into this important topic. Janes' approach is managerial or administrative, providing guidelines for reference work that can be applied in different settings. Janes creates a decision-making framework to help reference librarians make decisions concerning how, to what extent, and in what cases digital reference services will be delivered. In this way, Janes avoids dictating a "one-size-fits-all" model. This approach is the major strength of the book. Library administrators and heads of reference services will find the administrative approach welcome by helping them think through which digital reference policies and methods will best target core constituencies and their institutional environments. However, the book deserves a broader audience as professors will find that the book fits nicely in a general reference course. For all readers, the book is readable and engaging and also challenging and questioning. The book begins with a history of reference work, nicely positioning digital reference in this tradition and noting the changes wrought by the digital age. By doing this, the author establishes both continuity and change in reference work as well as the values surrounding this activity. Janes closes this chapter by noting that the continuing changes in demographics, technology, and connectivity will impact reference work in ways that are not yet imaginable. This introduction sets the tone for the rest of the book. Janes defines digital reference service as "the use of digital technologies and resources to provide direct, professional assistance to people who are seeking information, wherever and whenever they need it" (p. 29). This definition covers a lot of ground. Examples include everything from a public library answering email queries to commercial ask-an-expert services. While the primary audience is librarians, Janes continually reminds readers that many others perform reference activities an the World Wide Web. Furthermore, he cautions readers that there are larger forces shaping this activity in the world that need to acknowledged. In building a framework for decision-making, Janes outlines the types of digital reference service. This discussion covers the communieations modes, such as e-mail, chat, Web forms, etc. It also analyzes the modalities by which reference service is delivered: synchronous/ asynchronous. Using these two dimensions (communication method and synchronous/asynchronous), Janes presents the variety of contexts in which digital reference can take place and then outlines the strengths and weaknesses of each of these. This translates into a decision-making framework by which readers analyze their particular setting and then select the modes and modalities that world be most effective. This is a powerful device and demonstrates the many options (and perhaps also the obstacles) for providing digital reference service.
    The discussion of modes for digital reference world be incomplete without focusing an the technologies that support this activity. E-mail, Web forms, chat, instant messaging, and videoconferencing, as well as the call center based software, are now being adapted for use in libraries. The book discusses the technologies currently available and an the horizon to support digital reference services. While these sections of the book may not age well, they will provide us with a historical glimpse of the nascent development of such tools and how they were used at the beginning of the digital reference age. True to the emphasis an decision-making, the chapter an technology includes a list of functions that reference librarians world want in software to support digital reference. While no current applications have all of these features, this list provides librarians with some ideas concerning possible features that can be prioritized to aid in a selection process. Despite the emphasis an technology, Janes contextualizes this discussion with several significant issues relating to its implementation. These include everything from infrastructure, collaborative service standards, service design, user authentication, and user expectations. The sections an collaborative service models and service design are particularly interesting since they are both in their infancy. Readers wanting an answer or the "best" design of either institutional or collaborative digital reference service will be disappointed. However, raising these considerations is important and Janes points out how crucial these issues will be as online reference service matures. User authentication in the context of reference service is especially tricky since tensions can emerge between license agreements and the range of people who may or may not be covered by these contracts querying reference librarians. Finally, no discussion of digital reference is complete without a discussion of the possibility of 24/7 reference service and the ensuing user expectations. While Janes has no answers to the dilemmas these raise, he does alert libraries providing digital reference services to some of the realities. One is that libraries will get a broader range of questions, which could impact staff time, collection development to support these questions, and necessitate either a confirmation of priorities or a reprioritization of activities. Another reality is that the users of digital reference services may never have partaken of their services before. In fact, for libraries funded to serve a particular constituency (public libraries, academic libraries) this influx of users raises questions about levels of service, funding, and policy. Finally, in keeping with the underlying theme of values that pervades the book, Janes points out the deeper issues related to technology such as increasing ability to track users an the web. While he realizes that anonymous information about those who ask reference questions world provide reference librarians with a great deal of information to hone services and better serve constituencies, he is well aware of the dangers involved in collectiog patron information in electronic form.
    Given that the Web is constantly changing, Janes turns bis focus to the future of digital reference. Topics include changes in reference practice, restructuring resource utilization, and the evolving reference interview. These are crucial dimensions of digital reference practice that require attention. The most intriguing of these is the changing nature of the interaction with the patron. The majority of digital reference takes place without physical, aural, or visual eines to gauge understanding or to sense conclusion of the interaction. While Janes provides some guidelines for both digital reference interviewing and Web forms, he honestly admits that reference interviewing in the technologically mediated environment requires additional study in both the asynchronous and particularly synchronous communication modalities. As previously noted, Janes is as concerned about developing the infrastructure for digital reference, as he is about the service itself. By infrastructure, Janes means not only the technological infrastructure, but also the people and the institution. In discussing the need for institutionalization of digital reference, he discusses (re)training reference staff, staffing models, and institutionalizing the service. The section an institutionalizing the service itself is particularly strong and presents a 10-step planning process for libraries to follow as they consider developing online services. The book ends with some final thoughts and exhortations to the readers. The author, as in the rest of the book, encourages experimentation, innovation, and risk taking. These are not characteristics that are automatically associated with librarians, but these qualities are not alien to readers either. The theme of planning and the value of connecting people with information pervade this chapter. In this closing, Janes subtly tells readers that his guidelines and proposals are just that-there is no magic bullet here. But he does argue that there has been good work done and some models that can be adopted, adapted, and improved (and then hopefully shared with others). In the end, Janes leaves readers with a feeling that there is a place for library reference service in the digital realm. Furthermore, he is convinced that the knowledge and skills of reference librarians are translatable into this arena. By focusing an the institutionalization of digital reference services, Janes is trying to get libraries to better position themselves in the virtual world, beside the commercial services and the plethora of Web-based information competing for the patrons' attention."
