    Abstract
The Internet has led to an increase in the quantity and diversity of information available for searching. Furthermore, users are bombarded by a constant barrage of electronic messages in the form of e-mail, faxes, etc. This has led to a plethora of search engines, 'intelligent'agents, etc., that aim to help users in their quest for relevant information, or shield them against irrelevant information. All these systems aim to identify the potentially relevant information in among a large pool of available information. No unifying underlying theory for information discovery systems exist as yet. The aim of this article is to provide a logic-based framework for information discovery, and relate this to the traditional field of information retrieval. Furthermore, the often ignored user receives special emphasis. In information discovery, a good understanding of a user's (sometimes hidden) needs and beliefs is essential. We will develop a logic-based approach to express the mechanics of information discovery, while the pragmatics are based on an analysis of the underlying informational semantics of information carriers and information needs of users

    Abstract
Within any culture, three methods of knowledge discovery work together to situate and evolve accepted knowledge structures. Classification operates to control chaos by introducing formal rules for organizing the subject body of knowledge. The words used, and the concepts behind those words, create an ontological structure. What is not included is excluded. Culture studies have been developing ever since the early 19th century. Instrumentation has reorganized vision and practice, and has made the reality of situated knowledge more obvious. Postmodernism's questioning of Modernism's consistency and preservation of broad concepts of reality has provided a fertile ground for culture studies in all disciplines. Perhaps all social interactions, even the most primitive, are situated. The third player in knowledge discovery is the individual, who works within the culture but brings unique perception to bear on every issue. The individual is the locus of mutation and creation, which, if taken up by other individuals, eventually influences practice, and then such formalized structures as classifications and standards. All three modes of discovery are vital and essential, and participate in a multidimensional and interactive evolution

    Abstract
Information behavior theory covers different aspects of the totality of information-related human behavior rather unevenly. The transitions or trading zones between different types of information activities have remained perhaps especially under-theorized. This article interrogates and expands a conceptual apparatus of information making and information taking as a pair of substantial concepts for explaining, in part, the mobility of information in terms of doing that unfolds as a process of becoming rather than of being, and in part, what is happening when information comes into being and when something is taken up for use as information. Besides providing an apparatus to describe the nexus of information provision and acquisition, a closer consideration of the parallel doings opens opportunities to enrich the inquiry of the conditions and practice of information seeking, appropriation, discovery, and retrieval as modes taking, and learning and information use as its posterities.
