- Abstract
- A survey of the literature shows that little is known of how reference enquiries are answered in libraries and how far answers satisfy readers' needs. To remedy this situation a survey was held in 15 academic libraries in the Netherlands. Survey results show that the traditional approach to reference service was the norm despite the need for a more flexible approach. Follow up studies showed that reference satff often lacked in-depth subject knowledge. A national programme is required to provide training and exchange of expertise

- At Rotterdam Port Authority an information database has been created with approx. 100.000 full text documents online. Topic software has been used to identify word groups and refine search strategies to optimize precision and recall. The software guides users from selected terms to other relevant word combinations. Although the system would benefit from further refinement, users are generally satisfied. The database includes a number of foreign language documents but lacks a thesaurus of foreign terms

- Abstract
- A preliminary survey of poster collections in libraries, museums, and archives in the Netherlands revealed a wealth of material about which little was known. A deteiled survey was, therefore, undertaken in 1992 by the Rijksdienst Beeldende Kunst of 14 institutiions known to hold poster collections. As a result of the project the Database Nederlandse Affiches has been compiled to record details of the 72.000 items identified. Other institutions have now begun to submit details of their holdings to the database

- At Rotterdam Ports Authority in the Netherlands the Habour information database includes a press cuttings service and various online databases. To enable research staff to have direct access to information the POINT (Point Information Net) was begun in 1993. Using Verity software POINT provides simultaneously full text searching on a range of databases. The software uses current Web indexing technqiues to overcome the problems of excessive recall and low precision. A key element is the system's ability to recognise word combinations

- The Hyperlib project, which is a joint, EC-funded project, between the libraries of Antwerp and Loughborough universities, aims to investigate the opportunities for a hypertext-structured catalogue at Antwerp University. Essential to the project was a survey of user requirements. Because of time constraints, however, it proved impossible to develop a full hypertext-structured database. - Contribution to thematic issue of art libraries in the Netherlands. Visual images are now widely recognised as an importatnt resource for the historical research. To improve access to collections of such material H. van de Wal developed ICONCLASS in the Netherlands. With some 150.000 controlled indexing terms the scheme is hierarchical and easy to use. In response to requests a version of ICONCLASS has been developed for use in automated systems. The scheme has been used by the Dutch Royal Library for its database of printers' devices, published in CD-ROM version in Dec. 91. - Abstract
- In May 80 the joint working parties on the Dutch National Bibliography and the Dutch National Bibliographical Centre published their final report containing proposals for a national bibliography in the Netherlands based on Brinkmann's catalogue of books. In view of the limited number of terms used in the subject index of Brinkmann's catalogue it was proposed to adopt the thesaurus of headings developed by the Netherlands Bibliotheek en Lektuur Centrum with the addition of UDC and SISO classification numbers to each entry. A test-run has identified a core of some 3.500 headings which will be input into the database to provide a subject index to the bibliography. The system will become operational on 1 Jan 81

- Abstract
- The library of the Prince Leopold Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium is a specialised research library with some 14.000 books and 550 current periodical subscirptions. Since 1990 the library has used Bib/SEARCH (version 2.9) library management program to provide online catalogue and database information facilities. The system is structured to enable easy transfer of data from other sources, and fields may be defined according to the library' needs. Despite minor problems such as the indexing routine, experience at the Institute has been positive. A new version of the system is currently under development

- A study of new information systems and databases shows that insufficient help is provided to enable users to exploit these resources adequately. Despite surveys which show that users rarely employ Boolean logic appropriately in formulating search strategies database producers continue to use it as an indexing tool. - Abstract
- Developments in electronic communication technology have meda online databases a normal part of library collections. To provide users with direct access to Internet resources the Dutch Royal Library has cooperated with several university libraries in the Netherlands to develop the Nederlandse Basisclassificatie Web. Subject specialists select sources, add English summaries and NBW code, and input them to the online database. A Web desk and training workshops have been provided to assist users, and improvements to the system will simplify search procedures
