    Abstract
Reports results of the MARS project, conducted at Illinois University, to bring together researchers in the fields of computer vision, compression, information management and database systems with the goal of developing an effective multimedia database management system. Describes the first step, involving the design and implementation of an image retrieval system incorporating novel approaches to image segmentation, representation, browsing and information retrieval supported by the developed system. Points to future directions for the MARS project

Most staff are unaware of the potential benefits offered by the automated office environment. Discusses problems associated with office automation and sets out the features of the automated office: the need to be able to differentiate between alerting, awareness and reference documents; the delivery mechanisms; the email discipline; integration of multiple media; navigation aids; document creation; the need for guidelines and decisions; and the need for information management training

    Abstract
Full text management which applied to document management tends to be centred on text storage and retrieval. Recent developments are concerned with integration with relational database management system products to deliver document management services offering both the flexibility of text retrieval and the ability to support process based funnctions. There has been a move towards client server architectures, more user friendly user interfaces and more flexible and easier to understand retrieval. Advocates caution in choosing tasks for full text methods. Identifies document management functions for which the combined use of database management systems or special purpose tools should be considered

    Abstract
IBM's Ultimedia Manager is a software product for the management and retrieval of image data. It includes both traditional database search and content based search. The 2 main components of Ultimedia Manager are a database population tool to prepare images for query by identifying areas of interest and computing their features, and the query tool for doing retrievals. Application areas include stock photography, electronic libraries, retail, cataloguing, and business graphics

    Abstract
The Promenade image retrieval system us described in terms of its design, development and architecture. Design, development and implementation issues are discussed in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. A preliminary usability study is presented and the data resulting from the preliminary study are analysed and discussed. Efficiency in terms of response time due to network delays, database processing, application processing and image characteristcs and display is discussed. Response time results frome 40 queries made to the image database are presented and discussed. The results of theses studies demonstrate where improvements in the system need to be made in order ro improve usability and response time

    Abstract
Paper-based manual filing systems are inadequate to handle the flood of information found in most commercial offices and government agencies. Examples are included to delineate the dimensions of the problem. In response, imaging technology, which converts information in paper format to computer-readable binary format, is creating a multitude of electronic databases. However, imaging vendors are minimizing the difficulties of database organization. The author, drawing on personal experience, recounts instances of inadequate database organization. Because classification and indexing principles are only imparted in schools of library and/or information science, the imaging industry is highly dependent upon expertise possessed by library science graduates. In order to take advantage of this new job market, recommendations for library science students and faculty are included.

    Abstract
Only 10% of information used by an organisation is in electronic form hence the need to examine ways of processing and loading paper documents automatically in an electronic database. Discusses the principles of a document image processing (DIP) system; the difference between text retrieval and DIP; text retrieval systems and concept retrieval. Describes the TOPIC intelligent text retrieval system based on concept retrieval. Covers the TYPO operator developed for mispellings, character transpositions and 'dirty' text retrieved as output form OCR processes. Refers to an electronic news clipping service application

    Abstract
Shows how an application in office information systems can be modelled so that a dynamically growing database of hypertext documents is created and automatically extended, as well as easily searched. Proposes a method for analyzing office applications which relies on a model based on statecharts to record the flow of documents within the system. A prototype implementation is described of a hypertext system to support the creation, storage and retrieval of documents associated with formal face to face meetings. Special features to be incorporated into hypertext systems aimed at supporting the storage and retrieval of office documents are also identified

    Abstract
Parsytec Computer GmbH, Germany, has developed PrasyForm to help integrate document management systems and wirkflow systems by automating data capture into the document management system through the application of cognitive automation, i.e. the automation of simple, repetitive tasks where human recognition is unnecessary. It combines greyscale image processing, self-training intelligent character recognition readers (OCR) and associative database matching techniques

    Abstract
Describes the project (Electronic Library - Czech Parliament), undertaken at the Parliamentary Library of the Czech Republic, to undertake the retrospective conversion of the card catalogue and parliamentary papers to generate an online catalogue of the former and a full text database of the latter. Concludes by describing a project to create a knowledge based access system for users of the Parliamentary Library
