    Abstract
    Im Frühjahr 2004 eröffnete die bereits 2002 als ad-hoc-Arbeitsgruppe der AG UB und AG FHB im vbnw ins Leben gerufene AG Informationskompetenz mit ihrem Netzwerk von Multiplikatoren in den einzelnen Bibliotheken vor Ort den Diskurs über mögliche Kooperationen mit einem Workshop zur Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz als Schlüsselqualifikation in den Bachelor-Studiengängen. Interesse und Resonanz waren groß, und in der Folgezeit bildeten sich in NRW eine Fülle unterschiedlicher Verfahrensweisen und Modelle bei der Umsetzung der Schlüsselqualifikation IK in Lehrveranstaltungen heraus. Die AG Informationskompetenz unterstützte diesen Prozess nicht durch die Vorgabe verbindlicher Richtlinien für alle Bibliotheken, sondern durch gemeinschaftliches Erarbeiten der wichtigsten Bausteine und Elemente, mit deren Hilfe jede Bibliothek den für sie und die von ihr betreute Hochschule geeignetsten Weg zur Integration von Informationskompetenz in die Lehre finden sollte. Aus der Praxis für die Praxis wurde zum Leitmotiv der Entwicklungen und Projekte der AG. 2008 scheint es nun an der Zeit, das bisher Geleistete kritisch zu hinterfragen und im Interesse der Nachnutzung nicht nur Erfolge darzustellen, sondern auch die oft verschlungenen Pfade oder sogar Irrwege dorthin. Wie sind strategische Konzepte praktisch umgesetzt worden? Sind die Bibliotheken mittlerweile dort angekommen, wo sie hinwollten, nämlich als Partner in der Lehre ihrer Hochschulen anerkannt? Ist die von allen angestrebte Integration in die Curricula Segen oder Fluch? Wie sieht es bei der Kosten-Nutzen-Relation beim Personalaufwand für die Schulungsangebote aus? Ist die Integration in bestehende Lehrveranstaltungen frei organisierten Angeboten der Bibliotheken vorzuziehen? Welche Zielgruppen werden bedient, welche bewußt außen vor gelassen? Welche Inhalte und Methoden sind etabliert, welche haben sich nicht bewährt? Ist ELearning eine Lösung für die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz bei großen Gruppen? Welche Defizite erkennen die Bibliotheken selbst und wie sind die mittelfristigen Planungen im Lande? Und vor allem: ist die Informationskompetenz der Studierenden besser geworden? Dieser Fragenkomplex wird an Hand von Beispielen aus Nordrhein-Westfalen kritisch beleuchtet in der Hoffnung, anderen Bibliotheken dadurch den Weg in die Vermittlung von Informationskompetenz leichter zu machen.

Plieningr): "Auf der Vorderseite des Umschlags des Paperbacks prangt eine Grafik von der Art, wie man sie im Inhalt des Buches häufig finden kann: Ein runder Kreis, Pfeile nach innen und außen deuten die In- und Outputs an, innen konzentrische Kreise. Ganz außen ist die Organisation zu finden, eins weiter drinnen die Business strategy und den Kern bildet die information strategy. Das strategische Management der Information stellt also in der Vorstellung der Autorin den Kern einer Firma oder Organisation dar. Das Werk soll die Anleitung zu einer solchen Strategie geben. Allerdings handelt es sich im Grunde bei diesem Buch um bekannte Inhalte, da es sich um die nahezu unveränderte, und auch in den Bibliographien der einzelnen Kapitel nicht aktualisierte zweite Auflage von Practical information policies aus dem Jahre 1999 handelt. Aus diesem "Klassiker" wurden die detaillierten Fallstudien entfernt und hier durch eine neue Einleitung und zwei abschließende Kapitel ergänzt. Die Autorin weist denn auch in der Einleitung darauf hin, dass dieses Buch als Studienausgabe des Werkes von 1999 anzusehen ist. Die Literaturangaben der übernommenen Artikel wurden nicht aktualisiert, jene der neu hinzugefügten Kapitel endet bei 2002. Beim Lesen entfaltet das Werk seinen ganzen Charme angelsächsischer Kompetenz, praktische Inhalte theoretisch angeleitet und doch mit immensem Praxisbezug durchzuarbeiten und auszubreiten. Der Inhalt ist häufig durch Aufzählungen und Auflistungen ergänzt, wobei als Kritikpunkt anzumerken -ist, dass die Aufzählungspunkte im Unterschied zu der Vorauflage nicht jeweils auf einer neuen Zeile stehen, sondern in den Zeilenfluss eingearbeitet wurden um Platz zu sparen. Dies geht auf Kosten der Obersichtlichkeit, was einem Werk, das laut Verlagstexten auch für Lehr- und Studierzwecke eingesetzt werden soll, schlecht ansteht.

    Abstract
    More than 5000 publications related to library user instruction and information literacy have been published and reviewed in the past thirty years. New developments in education and technology during the last two decades have affected user instruction and have led to the emergence of information literacy. Based on needs related to the rapid development of information technology and the evolving information society, librarians have begun teaching information skills to all types of users to ensure that they gain information fluency so they can become productive and effective information users both in the education environment and in the work environment. The number of publications related to user instruction and information literacy, like the field itself, show phenomenal growth during the past three decades as demonstrated by the fact that in 1973 twenty-eight publications were reviewed, and in 2002 more than 300 publications dealing with the topic of information literacy will be issued. It is noteworthy that in the last decade there has been a tremendous growth in publications related to information literacy globally. During the 1970s, publications indicate that user instruction activities were of concern primarily to librarians in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. At the present time, publications indicate a major concern with information literacy not only in the countries mentioned above but also in China, Germany, Mexico, Scandinavia, Singapore, South Africa, South America, Spain, and others. On an annual hasis, the majority of the publications have addressed information literacy in academic libraries (60 percent) followed by publications related to information literacy instruction in school media centers (20 percent).
