    Abstract
    Presents a study to assist reference librarians/bibliographers in the selection of electronic formats of indexes and abstracts. It incorporated input from both general and experts users in a comparison of CD-ROM and Internet versions of Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA). The results indicate that CD-ROM technology, in spite of its user-friendliness, has limitations. The Internet version of ASFA has more current records, offers more comprehensive coverage of the ASFA databases, and allows unlimited remote access by faculty, staff, and students. Limitations of the Internet version include speed of access, search engine inadequacies, and the need for a more extensive training programme

    Abstract
    Discusses the nature of reference work and the role of reference librarians in digital libraries where many users serve themselves by means of the Bath ISI Data Service (BIDS) and other free-at-point-of-use information services which emulate the Bath service (MIDAS, EDINA). Considers how the concept of the 'reference desk' can be defined where points of presence for both users and librarians are distributed. Reports results of research, undertaken in Edinburgh, Scotland, to explore these issues in the context of the enhanced regional communications available through EaStMAN (Edinburgh and Stirling Metropolitan Area Network). The project involved the BIOSIS Abstracts service hosted by the EDINA consortium and linked 3 university libraries (Edinburgh University, Heriot-Watt University and Napier University). Investigated the experiences of users and the work patterns of librarians and related these to the design rationale of a prototype WWW based network reference consultation support system. Focused on types of user problems end expert responses across various media and genres of interaction. The pilot service is schedules to start in Autumn 1997 and a future report of its use is planned

    Abstract
    Purpose - The current study aims to review the different publications dealing with information literacy and the emerging trends reflected over the ten years, 1999-2009, in the Web of Science (WOS) database. Design/methodology/approach - The study presents both a statistical descriptive analysis of document type, subject areas, authors, source titles, publication years, languages, countries and keywords of publications extracted from the WOS database, as well as a thorough content analysis of keywords and abstracts extracted from the WOS database. Findings - The main results suggest that the term information literacy has various characteristics in an additional and interesting context: health and medicine. This finding may reflect a tendency of association between information literacy and health and medicine and stresses people's need for information literacy in this specific context. Originality/value - The current study emphasises the notion that information literacy is no longer an issue for librarians or educators only.

    Abstract
    Reports results of a questionnaire survey, conducted with vetrinary medical students at Iowa State University in 1997, to determine their general use of the Veterinary Medical Library and how they sought information in an electronic environment. Comparisons were made between this study and an ealier study (Bull. MLA 76(1988) no.4, S.328-333). Basic patterns of student activities in the library were found to be unchanged. The 1997 students used the library most frequently for photocopying, office supplies, and studying coursework; and they preferred textbooks and handouts for current information. However, a major shift was seen from the use of print indexes and abstracts in 1987 towards the use of computerized indexes and other electronic resources in 1997. 60% of the students reported using the Internet for current information. Overall use of electronic materials was highest among students receiving the problem based learning method of instruction.
