    Alle Objekte sollen von den einzelnen Mitglieds-Nationen ausgewählt werden mit Hinblick auf ihre nationalkulturelle Bedeutsamkeit. Eine Art Welterbe-Großbewegung ist da im Gang; nach dem Vorbild der Unesco, die ihrerseits, zusammen mit der Congress-Library, unter dem Namen der World Digital Library, ein ganz ähnliches, ganz globales Projekt verfolgt. Doch global ist natürlich auch schon das europäische Unternehmen, soll es sich doch in den sechs Amtssprachen der Union präsentieren. Und mehr noch: Gebäude sollen dreidimensional zugänglich werden. Irgendwann könnte man sich also etwa nach Chartres klicken, um die Kirche herumlaufen, eintreten und die Fenster von innen nach außen betrachten. Jede Ansicht könnte man zoomen; man könnte baukünstlerische Details erkennen, auch und gerade in größter Höhe und aus größter Nähe, die dem Normalbesucher sonst niemals zugänglich sind. Für all das sind natürlich enorme technische Voraussetzungen zu erfüllen. Die massive Unterstützung der elektronischen Industrie unter der französischen Ratsherrschaft ist bekannt; die technische Zentrale des Ganzen liegt bei der Königlichen Bibliothek in Den Haag. Doch wie gesagt, die meisten Artefakte sind eben noch gar nicht digital vorhanden. Rund 2,5 Milliarden Bücher besitzen die europäischen Bibliotheken zusammen, aber erst ein Prozent davon ist digital erfasst. Besser als bei den Büchern sieht es schon bei den visuellen Werken aus: die Filmwirtschaft hat ja bereits im "European Film Gateway" ihren Einstieg ins digitale Zeitalter vollzogen. Die Musikindustrie ist ohnehin auf diesem für sie nicht nur einträglichen, sondern zugleich auch mörderischen Trip in den état numérique, den Zahlenzustand, wie die Franzosen es nennen. Der Ausdruck ist wunderbar. Er zeigt an, dass wir mit der Erfindung des Internet versuchen, unsere Geisteswelt in Zahlen zu verwandeln. Zahlen sind die Hardware des Geistes; Bilder und Töne und Sprache dagegen nur Schaum.
