    Abstract
    Die durch das WWW gegebenen Möglichkeiten, von den Suchergebnissen einer Datenbank über Hyperlinks auf elektronische Volltexte zuzugreifen, einzelne Titel online zu bestellen oder mit anderen Datenbanken oder Katalogen zu verknüpfen, werden mittlerweile von vielen Datenbankanbietern genutzt oder standardmässig angeboten. Das hier besprochene Linksystem weist dieselben Möglichkeiten auf und verbindet Suchergebnisse mit lokal verfügbaren elektronischen Zeitschriften bzw. mit Bibliotheks-Katalogen. Auch eine automatische Bestellfunktion ist vorhanden. Dieses auf Javascript basierende Linksystem verwendet ein einfaches, bisher aber noch wenig bekanntes Verfahren, bei dem jeweils die gesamte Ergebnisliste einer Datenbank (50 bis 200 Titel) in das Texteingabefeld eines Formulars eingefügt und dann weiter mit Javascript bearbeitet wird. Vorteilhaft ist die gross Anpassungsfähigkeit des Programms an die speziellen oder sogar individuellen Bedürfnisse. Medline-LINK wendet dieses Linkverfahren auf die besonders effiziente und zudem entgeltfreie Datenbank PubMed an. In dieser Testversion bilden die von der UB Regensburg abonnierten E-Zeitschriften zusätzlich eines großen Teils von elsevier-Zeitschriften den Grundbestand der zu verknüpfenden Zeitschriften. Über die dynamisch ermittelte ISSN kann die Verbindung von der Ergebnisanzeige zu den Bestandsanzeigen des BVB und GBV hergestellt werden. Die automatische Bestellfunktion wird am Beispiel des Fernleihbestellformulars der UB Regensburg demonstriert

    Abstract
    Social networks evolve over time with the addition and removal of nodes and links to survive and thrive in their environments. Previous studies have shown that the link-formation process in such networks is influenced by a set of facilitators. However, there have been few empirical evaluations to determine the important facilitators. In a research partnership with law enforcement agencies, we used dynamic social-network analysis methods to examine several plausible facilitators of co-offending relationships in a large-scale narcotics network consisting of individuals and vehicles. Multivariate Cox regression and a two-proportion z-test on cyclic and focal closures of the network showed that mutual acquaintance and vehicle affiliations were significant facilitators for the network under study. We also found that homophily with respect to age, race, and gender were not good predictors of future link formation in these networks. Moreover, we examined the social causes and policy implications for the significance and insignificance of various facilitators including common jails on future co-offending. These findings provide important insights into the link-formation processes and the resilience of social networks. In addition, they can be used to aid in the prediction of future links. The methods described can also help in understanding the driving forces behind the formation and evolution of social networks facilitated by mobile and Web technologies.

    Citation analysis has long been used by librarians as an important tool of collection development and the advent of Internet technology and especially the WWW adds a new facet to the role played by citation analysis. One of the reasons why librarians create WWW homepages is to provide users with further sources of interest or reference and to do this libraries include links from their own homepages to other information sources.     Abstract
    Navigating through hyperlinks within a Web site to look for information from one of its Web pages without the support of a site map can be inefficient and ineffective. Although the content of a Web site is usually organized with an inherent structure like a topic hierarchy, which is a directed tree rooted at a Web site's homepage whose vertices and edges correspond to Web pages and hyperlinks, such a topic hierarchy is not always available to the user. In this work, we studied the problem of automatic generation of Web sites' topic hierarchies. We modeled a Web site's link structure as a weighted directed graph and proposed methods for estimating edge weights based on eight types of features and three learning algorithms, namely decision trees, naïve Bayes classifiers, and logistic regression. Three graph algorithms, namely breadth-first search, shortest-path search, and directed minimum-spanning tree, were adapted to generate the topic hierarchy based on the graph model. We have tested the model and algorithms on real Web sites. It is found that the directed minimum-spanning tree algorithm with the decision tree as the weight learning algorithm achieves the highest performance with an average accuracy of 91.9%.

    Schon seit über 12 Jahren setzt sich die wissenschaftliche Verlagsgruppe Springer mit den sich ständig weiterentwickelnden und effektiveren Wegen und Möglichkeiten der elektronische Informationsverarbeitung auseinander - zunächst primär mit Offline-Produkten, dann auch immer stärker im Online-bereich. 1995 erschien die erste von zwischenzeitlich 10 rein elektronischen Zeitschriften. Seit Anfang 1997 gibt es LINK - den Springer Online Informationsservice, in dem derzeit bereits mehr als 290 der mehr als 400 Springer-Zeitschriften als Volltext online verfügbar sind. LINK bietet gezielte Recherchen in den aufgelegten Informationen: Blättern in den Inhaltsverzeichnissen, differenzierte Suchfunktionalitäten, FAQ-Seiten, Testabos und vieles andere mehr runden das LINK-Servicepaket ab. Neu in LINK ist 'Online First' zur Publikation freigegebene Artikel werden lange noch vor ihrem Erscheinen in der gedruckten Zeitschrift online publiziert.     Abstract
    Purpose - Link analysis is an established topic within webometrics. It normally uses counts of links between sets of web sites or to sets of web sites. These link counts are derived from web crawlers or commercial search engines with the latter being the only alternative for some investigations. This paper compares link counts with URL citation counts in order to assess whether the latter could be a replacement for the former if the major search engines withdraw their advanced hyperlink search facilities. Design/methodology/approach - URL citation counts are compared with link counts for a variety of data sets used in previous webometric studies. Findings - The results show a high degree of correlation between the two but with URL citations being much less numerous, at least outside academia and business. Research limitations/implications - The results cover a small selection of 15 case studies and so the findings are only indicative. Significant differences between results indicate that the difference between link counts and URL citation counts will vary between webometric studies. Practical implications - Should link searches be withdrawn, then link analyses of less well linked non-academic, non-commercial sites would be seriously weakened, although citations based on e-mail addresses could help to make citations more numerous than links for some business and academic contexts. Originality/value - This is the first systematic study of the difference between link counts and URL citation counts in a variety of contexts and it shows that there are significant differences between the two.

    Abstract
    Link analysis in various forms is now an established technique in many different subjects, reflecting the perceived importance of links and of the Web. A critical but very difficult issue is how to interpret the results of social science link analyses. lt is argued that the dynamic nature of the Web, its lack of quality control, and the online proliferation of copying and imitation mean that methodologies operating within a highly positivist, quantitative framework are ineffective. Conversely, the sheer variety of the Web makes application of qualitative methodologies and pure reason very problematic to large-scale studies. Methodology triangulation is consequently advocated, in combination with a warning that the Web is incapable of giving definitive answers to large-scale link analysis research questions concerning social factors underlying link creation. Finally, it is claimed that although theoretical frameworks are appropriate for guiding research, a Theory of Link Analysis is not possible.

    Math-Link ist eines der in das Multisuchsystem E-Connect integrierten Linksysteme, die Datenbanken mit verfügbaren E-Zeitschriften bzw. den Standortnachweisen der zuständigen Verbundkataloge verknüpfen. In diesem Fall besteht eine Verknüpfung der Datenbank MathDatabase mit den E-Zeitschriften verschiedener Bibliotheken sowie mit den deutschen Verbundkatalogen. Math-Link ist wie die anderen Linksysteme ein mit JavaScript erstelltes und mit einem Webformular verbundenes Programm, das unabhängig von MathDatabase in einem besonderen Frame wie hier oder einem eigenen Browserfenster läuft. Der Zugriff auf die von MathDatabase angezeigten Suchergebnisse erfolgt nicht direkt, sondern lediglich von außen her durch Einfügen der vorher insgesamt markierten und kopierten Webseiten dieser Suchergebnisse in das Formulareingabefeld des Linksystems. Math-Link existiert in zwei Versionen. Eine inzwischen etwas veraltete Version ist auf das HTML-Format der Datanbankanzeige, eine neue Version auf das Ascii-Format eingestellt. Diese neue Version soll hier vorgestellt werden.

    Abstract
    Recent Web-searching and -mining tools are combining text and link analysis to improve ranking and crawling algorithms. The central assumption behind such approaches is that there is a correiation between the graph structure of the Web and the text and meaning of pages. Here I formalize and empirically evaluate two general conjectures drawing connections from link information to lexical and semantic Web content. The link-content conjecture states that a page is similar to the pages that link to it, and the link-cluster conjecture that pages about the same topic are clustered together. These conjectures are offen simply assumed to hold, and Web search tools are built an such assumptions. The present quantitative confirmation sheds light an the connection between the success of the latest Web-mining techniques and the small world topology of the Web, with encouraging implications for the design of better crawling algorithms.

    Abstract
    In this article, we define webometrics within the framework of informetric studies and bibliometrics, as belonging to library and information science, and as associated with cybermetrics as a generic subfield. We develop a consistent and detailed link typology and terminology and make explicit the distinction among different Web node levels when using the proposed conceptual framework. As a consequence, we propose a novel diagram notation to fully appreciate and investigate link structures between Web nodes in webometric analyses. We warn against taking the analogy between citation analyses and link analyses too far.

    Abstract
    Given a snapshot of a social network, can we infer which new interactions among its members are likely to occur in the near future? We formalize this question as the link-prediction problem, and we develop approaches to link prediction based on measures for analyzing the "proximity" of nodes in a network. Experiments on large coauthorship networks suggest that information about future interactions can be extracted from network topology alone, and that fairly subtle measures for detecting node proximity can outperform more direct measures.

    Abstract
    The study examined Web co-links to Canadian university Web sites. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was used to analyze and visualize co-link data as was done in co-citation analysis. Co-link data were collected in ways that would reflect three different views, the global view, the French Canada view, and the English Canada view. Mapping results of the three data sets accurately reflected the ways Canadians see the universities and clearly showed the linguistic and cultural differences within Canadian society. This shows that Web co-linking is not a random phenomenon and that co-link data contain useful information for Web data mining. It is proposed that the method developed in the study can be applied to other contexts such as analyzing relationships of different organizations or countries. This kind of research is promising because of the dynamics and the diversity of the Web.
