    Abstract
An awareness exists among Italian librarians of the need for an established code of ethics for library reference services. Considers the principles that such a code should incorporate; the US Commitment to Information services, for example, affirms users' rights of access to library books and resources, regardless of content and opinions expressed. Censoship is opposed and people are not barred from library use for ethnis, social or religious reasons. An ethical code would require library staff to be impartial, give attention and respect to users, allocate time properly, and avoid prejudice. Discusses the problems of library ethics which arise when user requests relate to sensitive topics e.g. euthansia, cocaine refining

    Abstract
The new paradigm of reference, in which the reference librarian becomes a consultant more than a quick-answer specialist, needs to be stretched, Mood advocates. Rather than assisting people with their research, the reference librarian needs to do the research for them. After an interview to assess the user's needs, the librarian searches various print and nonprint access tools, then presents to the patron a bibliography of sources and - possibly - copies of articles and books. This new approach to reference is needed because of both the increasing complication of libraries, with their myriad computer access points to information, and the increasing number of patrons who want information but do not want to learn how to retrieve it. This change in library reference can be implemented with better signage, more prepackaging of information, and an increased knowledge of the local community's information needs

    Abstract
Contribution to an issue devoted to serials and reference services. Reference librarians in the Surburban Library System in the south suburbs of Chicago have formed associations to share ideas and promote cooperative projects. Small scale, without outside funding, these projects contribute to improving library service to users. Organised by public librarians, the Reference Association of South Suburban Libraries (RASSL) now includes several community college libraries. 33 libraries in a telephone book cooperative collect the telephone books for all cities in the US. A newspaper cooperative shares subscriptions to the Sunday editions of 12 out-of-town newspapers. A reference book exchange distributes withdrawn reference books. A guide to subject strengths helps members locate strong subject collections in area libraries. A cooperative collection development project helps develop special collections to meet the needs of members.

    Abstract
Current trends in library training and practice reflect the inexorable movement toward the electronic environemnt. In this setting, librarians are beginning to pay considerably less attention to the books in their reference collections than to the online sources. This is cause for concern, since materials in the print format are often preferable to the electronic. They can be more accessible, quicker, and easier to use. Their contents are likely to be more comprehensive and are often unique. Urges librarians to continue to become familiar with and use the books in their reference collection

    Abstract

    Abstract
Althogh the library literature contains numerous papers on the functional and performance evaluation of OPACs, as well as on the evaluation of many facets of reference service, it presents little assistance for the evaluation of OPACs as the central facet of reference service. In order to alleviate this lack, evaluates OPACs as if they were any other reference tool, judging them against Norman D. Stevens' classic 18 criteria for the evaluation of reference books. Includes a selective bibliography of works on both OPAC and reference book evaluation
