    Abstract
Comments on Douglas Hofstadter's index to his book 'Le ton beau de Marot: in praise of the music of language'. Hofstadter took charge of the book design, typography, typesetting and copy-editing, and also compiled the index which covers 23 pages of 3 columnes and is set in a practically illegible 4-point. Although the index breaks all the rules of indexing, it is a masterly creation showing the author's industry, exhuberance and wit. Summarizes Hofstadter's own remarks on how creating the index gave hin new insights into what his book was essentially about

    Abstract
Wordmanship is a humorous dictionary cum index. Analyzing its structure, considers general aspects of the design of a reference work in relation to its index. Indexers should be consulted at the design stage of reference books, as they may suggest reversal of the primary entries, and the index entries; refine the cross-reference-structure; revise locator notation; and select appropriate typography

    Abstract
Describes Jules Maciet's collection in the Bibliothèque des arts décoratifs, one of Paris's most accessible specialist art libraries, which offers the researcher an eclectic range of visual materials inclusing rare prints and photographs. It is an exhaustive collection still classified today according to the original system. An index of engravers, publishers and printsellers, and sources serves artists, researchers and other users

    Abstract
The frame structure matches the profile of features desirable in a syntagmatic relationship system and should be incorporated as the basic structural unit in index languages. The construction of frame-based index languages is discussed. Selected findings based on the case study analysis of implementing a New Testament-oriented frame-based indexing language are presented

    Abstract
Knowledge engineering has been used to design an intelligent interface for the Juris-Data database, 1 of the largest case study databases in France. It was based on the legal classification elaborated by the Juris-Data group to index the cases. The system aims to to help users find the case study most relevant to their own. A methodology for the construction of legal classification of the primary document was designed together with a framework for index construction. This led to the implementation of a Legal Case Studies Engineering Framework based on the accumulated experimentation and the methodologies designed. It consists of a set of computerized tools which support the life cycle of the legal document from their processing by legal experts to their consultation by clients

    Abstract
With the development during the last few years of the USMARC Format for Classification Data, the potential for improving call number browsing in online catalogs has increased dramatically. For example, it is now possible to create various types of indexes to classification numbers in the online catalog. Two types of possible indexes, a chain index and an index using Library of Congress subject headings as an index to the Library of Congress classification are discussed and examples given in appendices. It is also noted that these two indexes are only two of various forms an online index to classification numbers could take.

    Abstract
Compares and evaluates the indexes to the 1978 and 1988 editions of AACR2. The format of the index follows the recommendations of the major standards, but the indexer's use of chain index structure and omission of concrete topics create difficulties for cataloguers. Explains and illustrates the structure and gives examples of missing entries and cross-changes to the index with the goal of their adoption in the next edition of AACR.

    Abstract
Describes an experiment comparing the performance of automatic full-text indexing software for personal computers with the human intellectual assignment of indexing terms in each document in a collection. Considers the times required to index the document, to retrieve documents satisfying 5 typical foreseen information needs, and the recall and precision ratios of searching. The software used is QuickFinder facility in WordPerfect 6.1 for Windows
