    Abstract
    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to treat disinformation and misinformation (intentionally deceptive and unintentionally inaccurate misleading information, respectively) as a socio-cultural technology-enabled epidemic in digital news, propagated via social media. Design/methodology/approach The proposed disinformation and misinformation triangle is a conceptual model that identifies the three minimal causal factors occurring simultaneously to facilitate the spread of the epidemic at the societal level. Findings Following the epidemiological disease triangle model, the three interacting causal factors are translated into the digital news context: the virulent pathogens are falsifications, clickbait, satirical "fakes" and other deceptive or misleading news content; the susceptible hosts are information-overloaded, time-pressed news readers lacking media literacy skills; and the conducive environments are polluted poorly regulated social media platforms that propagate and encourage the spread of various "fakes." Originality/value The three types of interventions - automation, education and regulation - are proposed as a set of holistic measures to reveal, and potentially control, predict and prevent further proliferation of the epidemic. Partial automated solutions with natural language processing, machine learning and various automated detection techniques are currently available, as exemplified here briefly. Automated solutions assist (but not replace) human judgments about whether news is truthful and credible. Information literacy efforts require further in-depth understanding of the phenomenon and interdisciplinary collaboration outside of the traditional library and information science, incorporating media studies, journalism, interpersonal psychology and communication perspectives.

    Abstract
    Falsche Nachrichten sind keine Erscheinung der Neuzeit. Die Feststellung, dass es im Internet Falschinformationen gibt, ist eine Binsenweisheit. In welchem Umfang jedoch Politiker mit falschen Behauptungen Erfolge erreichen und verifizierte Informationen als Fake News misskreditieren, ist besonders im Jahr 2016 in den Blickpunkt der Öffentlichkeit gelangt. Zu Recht, denn die gesellschaftlichen Auswirkungen sind gravierend. Die Auseinandersetzung mit derartigen Informationspathologien ist ein Aufgabengebiet der Informationswissenschaften. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit soll die Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage sein, ob sich Manipulationen im Internet durch informationswissenschaftliche Methoden identifizieren lassen. Deshalb werden Falschinformationen zunächst in den informationswissenschaftlichen Kontext gestellt, unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Sichtweisen von Reiner Kuhlen, Luciano Floridi und Don Fallis. Nach einem kurzen Exkurs zu Nachrichten und Medien werden Falschinformationen basierend auf einem Konzept von Giglietto et al. konkreter untersucht. Dazu wird auf die Besonderheiten der Informationsausbreitung im Web 2.0 eingegangen, der Begriff "irreführende Informationen" eingeführt und Faktoren, die für deren Weitergabe relevant sind, benannt. Für die Untersuchung, wie irreführende Informationen weitergegeben werden, steht statt einer akteurorientierten Betrachtung der Aspekt des Prozesses im Mittelpunkt. Dies erfolgt durch die Untersuchung von vier Typologien der Weitergabe irreführender Informationen. Durch das vorgestellte Verbreitungsmodell lassen sich Zusammenhänge und Abläufe bei der Verbreitung von Fake News und anderen irreführenden Informationen besser beschreiben und verstehen als bis zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt.

    Abstract
    The social dynamics of alternative facts: why what you believe depends on who you know. Why should we care about having true beliefs? And why do demonstrably false beliefs persist and spread despite bad, even fatal, consequences for the people who hold them? Philosophers of science Cailin OConnor and James Weatherall argue that social factors, rather than individual psychology, are whats essential to understanding the spread and persistence of false beliefs. It might seem that theres an obvious reason that true beliefs matter: false beliefs will hurt you. But if thats right, then why is it (apparently) irrelevant to many people whether they believe true things or not? The Misinformation Age, written for a political era riven by fake news, alternative facts, and disputes over the validity of everything from climate change to the size of inauguration crowds, shows convincingly that what you believe depends on who you know. If social forces explain the persistence of false belief, we must understand how those forces work in order to fight misinformation effectively.

    Nicht nur der Google-Chefentwickler Ray Kurzweil hausiert schon seit Jahr und Tag mit dieser technizistischen Neuauflage jenes klassischen religiösen Ur-Moments, den Michelangelo auf dem berühmten Fresko in der Sixtinischen Kapelle festgehalten hat, auf dem Gott im Begriff ist, den erst körperlich erschaffenen Menschen durch eine Berührung der Fingerspitzen zu »beseelen«. Im Silicon Valley befassen sich ganze Think Tanks damit. Wie aber soll sich der Sprung vom Beschleunigen serieller Rechnungen mit Nullen und Einsen zum bewussten Denken, gar Fühlen und Begehren vollziehen? Darauf gibt es keine Antwort innerhalb der Ingenieurwissenschaft. Die Vorstellung, das Hirn sei nicht kategorisch von einer Anhäufung von Bits und Bytes zu unterscheiden - also von Informationen, die irgendwo hochgeladen oder maschinell generiert werden können -, erhebt die »Information« zu einer quasi sakralen Weltformel. Dieselbe hat aber natürlich sehr reale und rapide wachsende Auswirkungen auf unser soziales und politisches Leben. Das muntere Prozessieren von Informationen, die vor allem durch ihre Unmittelbarkeit enorme Wirkung entfalten, öffnet dem Gerücht, der Spekulation und den viel beschworenen Fake News Tür und Tor, wie Donald Trump mit seinen Tweets stets aufs Neue beweist. In digitalen Netzwerken vervielfachen sich Informationen, ihre semantische Stimmigkeit ist sekundär. »Alles, was prozessiert werden kann, hat Relevanz, von Aktienkursen über Theorien zur flachen Erde oder zu Reptiloiden. Es muss nicht stimmen, nur effektvoll zirkulieren«, schreibt Feustel - der auch als Mitautor des »Wörterbuchs des besorgten Bürgers« bekannt ist, in dem er und einige Wissenschaftskollegen sich kritisch mit den Begriffen der Neuen Rechten auseinandersetzen.

    "Es gibt Daten, Informationen und Fakten. Wenn man mir eine Zahlenreihe vorsetzt, dann handelt es sich um Daten: unterscheidbare Einheiten, im Fachjargon: Items. Wenn man mir sagt, dass diese Items stündliche Temperaturangaben der Aare im Berner Marzilibad bedeuten, dann verfüge ich über Information - über interpretierte Daten. Wenn man mir sagt, dies seien die gemessenen Aaretemperaturen am 22. August 2016 im Marzili, dann ist das ein Faktum: empirisch geprüfte interpretierte Daten. Dieser Dreischritt - Unterscheiden, Interpretieren, Prüfen - bildet quasi das Bindemittel des Faktischen, «the matter of fact». Wir alle führen den Dreischritt ständig aus und gelangen so zu einem relativ verlässlichen Wissen und Urteilsvermögen betreffend die Dinge des Alltags. Aber wie schon die Kurzcharakterisierung durchblicken lässt, bilden Fakten nicht den Felsengrund der Realität. Sie sind kritikanfällig, sowohl von der Interpretation wie auch von der Prüfung her gesehen. Um bei unserem Beispiel zu bleiben: Es kann durchaus sein, dass man uns zwei unterschiedliche «faktische» Temperaturverläufe der Aare am 22. August 2016 vorsetzt.
