    Abstract
    Result clustering has recently attracted a lot of attention to provide the users with a succinct overview of relevant search results than traditional search engines. This chapter proposes a mixed clustering method to organize all returned search results into a hierarchical tree structure. The clustering method accomplishes two main tasks, one is label construction and the other is tree building. This chapter uses precision to measure the quality of clustering results. According to the results of experiments, the author preliminarily concluded that the performance of the system is better than many other well-known commercial and academic systems. This chapter makes several contributions. First, it presents a high performance system based on the clustering method. Second, it develops a divisive hierarchical clustering algorithm to organize all returned snippets into hierarchical tree structure. Third, it performs a wide range of experimental analyses to show that almost all commercial systems are significantly better than most current academic systems.

    Das gezielte Suchen im Internet findet in erster Linie mit Hilfe der Suchmaschinen statt. Daneben gibt es aber bereits eine Fülle von strukturierten Informationsangeboten, aufbereiteten Listen und Sammelstellen, die als Clearinghouse, Subject Gateway, Subject Tree oder Resource Pages bezeichnet werden. Solche intellektuell erstellten Übersichten geben in der Regel bereits Hinweise zu Inhalt und fachlichem Niveau der Quelle. Da die Art und Weise der Aufbereitung bei den Sammelstellen sehr unterschiedlich funktioniert, ist die Kenntnis ihrer Erschließungskriterien für ein erfolgreiches Retrieval unverzichtbar

    Abstract
    Abstracts from 7 Internet subject trees (Euroferret, Excite, Infoseek, Lycos Top 5%, Magellan, WebCrawler, Yahoo!), 5 Internet subject gateways (ADAM, EEVL, NetFirst, OMNI, SOSIG), and 3 online databases (ERIC, ISI, LISA) were examined for their subject content, treatment of various enriching features, physical properties such as overall length, anf their readability. Considerable differences were measured, and consistent similarities among abstracts from each type of source were demonstrated. Internet subject tree abstracts were generally the shortest, and online database abstracts the longest. Subject tree and online database abstracts were the most informative, but the level of coverage of document features such as tables, bibliographies, and geographical constraints were disappointingly poor. On balance, the Internet gateways appeared to be providing the most satisfactory abstracts.     Abstract
    The purpose of this paper is to determine some of the structural features of the classification schemes used in the directories (guides, channels) of search engines to organise information sources on the Internet. Ten search engines were examined at the main class level and the full hierarchies of a sample of three specific subjects were analysed in four of these engines, namely Excite, Infoseek, Lycos and Yahoo! It was found that there are major differences between the main classes of the search engines and those found in standard library schemes like Dewey, UDC and LCC. There are large gaps in subject coverage at main class level in the search engines and the general tendency is to use a topic-based approach in the formation of classes, rather than a discipline-based approach. The subdivision of the main classes is according to hierarchical tree structures, but a number of anomalies in this regard were identified. Another deviation from library classification theory is that various principles of division are employed to form classes at the same hierarchical level. In an analysis of citation orders many examples were found that conform to the principles followed in library classifications, but a number of inconsistencies in this regard were also noted

    Abstract
    The application of clustering to Web search engine technology is a novel approach that offers structure to the information deluge often faced by Web searchers. Clustering methods have been well studied in research labs; however, real user searching with clustering systems in operational Web environments is not well understood. This article reports on results from a transaction log analysis of Vivisimo.com, which is a Web meta-search engine that dynamically clusters users' search results. A transaction log analysis was conducted on 2-week's worth of data collected from March 28 to April 4 and April 25 to May 2, 2004, representing 100% of site traffic during these periods and 2,029,734 queries overall. The results show that the highest percentage of queries contained two terms. The highest percentage of search sessions contained one query and was less than 1 minute in duration. Almost half of user interactions with clusters consisted of displaying a cluster's result set, and a small percentage of interactions showed cluster tree expansion. Findings show that 11.1% of search sessions were multitasking searches, and there are a broad variety of search topics in multitasking search sessions. Other searching interactions and statistics on repeat users of the search engine are reported. These results provide insights into search characteristics with a cluster-based Web search engine and extend research into Web searching trends.

    Abstract
    Mit nicht völlig neuen, aber überarbeiteten Suchfunktionen erweitert das zum Firmenimperium des US-Medienzaren Barry Diller gehörende Unternehmen Ask Jeeves das Leistungsspektrum seiner Suchmaschine. Mit der Ergebnisverfeinerungsfunktion Focus erhält der Suchende auf der rechten oberen Bildschirmseite eine Liste, die das Thema seiner Suche thematisch aufgliedern soll. Eine zweite Neuerung verspricht präzise Antworten auf als Fragen formulierte Sucheinträge. So ergibt der Eintrag "Lady Diana" zum Beispiel eine Liste mit den Items Princess Di, Princess Dianas Life, Princess Diana's Wedding. Interessant dabei ist, dass diese Liste nicht einfach aus einem monolithischen Block von Schlüsselwörtern besteht, sondern in drei Kategorien aufgeteilt ist: "Narrow Your Search", "Expand Your Search" und "Related Names". Waren die eben genannten Beispiele aus der ersten Kategorie, finden sich unter Expand Your Search Einträge wie Royal Family, Princess Di Ring, Princess Di Prince Charles History oder Prince William Harry, allerdings auch Who Is Louis De Funes? "Related Names" verweist auf Einträge wie Diana Spencer, Prince Harry oder Imran Khan. Die Suchfunktion soll also die thematische Verfeinerung oder Ausweitung gleichermaßen wie die Fortsetzung der Suche mit einem verwandten Thema ermöglichen. Auf die Frage "who invented the telephone" erhält der Suchende als ersten Eintrag die Antwort "The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell" mit dem roten Vermerk "Web Answer'. Bemerkenswert ist hier, dass auf eine Frage nicht nur eine passende Webseite mit der Antwort angezeigt wird, sondern die ausformulierte Antwort direkt aus der vorgeschlagenen Webseite zitiert wird. Die Frage "who is the mother of Albert Einstein" gibt immerhin einen Eintrag unter "Narrow Your Search" mit "Albert Einstein Family tree". Ask Jeeves wird wohl noch eine weitere Neuerung bevorstehen: Auf einer Pressekonferenz in San Francisco bemerkte Chief Executive Barry Diller, dass das Unternehmen über eine Namensänderung von Ask Jeeves nachdenke. Wahrscheinlich werde auf eines der beiden Worte verzichtet werden. Mit dem Sucheintrag "How will Ask Jeeves be called in the future" erhält man bislang jedoch noch keine "Web Answer".
