    Abstract
The future creation of serial librarians prepared to meet the many challenges of serial control, management, automation, and database management requires a solid background in AACR2 rules, MARC tagging, OCLC conventions, classification and subject analysis. The future profile of a serial librarian will require determination, patience, an eye for detail and common sense to tackle the unpredictable world of serials. Continuing education is inevitable to assure the survival of a serial librarian involved in management and serial crisis.

    Abstract
Network learning holds promise for the delivery of continuing professional LIS education. Many LIS schools are revising curricula so that they van respond better to the needs of new information markets. Terms replacing 'librarian' were proposed. The difficulties of implementing curricula changes in eastern Europe were outlined. Quality assessment was seen as an integral part of curriculum development and necessary to satisfy the changing requirements of the market place

    Abstract
Describes how the small-scale public information service at Milan's Universita degli Studi Political Sciences library coped with the emergency caused by the sudden resignation of its reference librarian by drafting in on a part-time replacement basis existing library staff without previous reference desk experience. Outlines their intensive training in the information technology needed to enable them to provide the differing materials and services required by 3 classes of reader: undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates

    Abstract
Evaluates gap between traditional library and LIS and needs of the IT workplace. Includes literature review of characteristics which knowledge and information managers need in the private sector. Three surveys were carried out via questionnaires and compared with literature review. Surveys were of business needs, LIS courses content, and experience of LIS graduates. Results suggest that while LIS graduates are being equipped with the necessary skills, the view of "the librarian" is impeding entry of LIS graduates into the knowledge management employment sector. Graduates with LIS skills need to market themselves more effectively in the IT workplace.

    Abstract
Educating librarians to perform authority work and catalog maintenance involves formal education in library school and both on-the-job and in-service training. However, the path from library school graduate to authority control librarian is neither direct nor self-evident. The authors surveyed the membership of the AUTOCAT electronic discussion group to determine how librarians learn the theory and practice of authority control and catalog maintenance; strategies that would make authority control easier to learn; levels of educational responsibility involved for the library schools, individual librarians and their employers; and how librarians value authority control. The survey results show that an ongoing collaboration among librarians, employers and educators is needed to refine and simplify the process of authority control education.

    Abstract
This article explores the debates among library science educators in the decade prior to the publication of the Williamson Report in 1923. It explores the lives and work of three prominent California library administrators and educational pioneers: Everett Perry at the Los Angeles Public Library, Joseph Daniels at the Riverside Public Library, and James Gillis, California State Librarian. Perry, Daniels, and Gillis developed innovative and distinctive library training programs at their respective institutions, and in the process they engaged in vigorous, often contentious, correspondence over their educational philosophies and goals and how library education should develop in the future. Their debates reflected current issues in the emerging profession, while their actions prefigured many of the recommendations of the Williamson Report, most notably the transferal of library training to the university. While none of these pioneering library science programs in California have survived, they represent a critical stage in the professionalization and legitimization of library science as an academic discipline.

    Abstract
Cataloguing and classification were at the core of the first librarian training programs In 2011, LIS educators continue to believe in the importance of teaching the basics of the classification process to all future information professionals. Information on classification instruction was collected through a survey of instructors in ALA-accredited LIS masters' programs. The survey was structured around issues touching several dimensions of any teaching endeavour, with an emphasis on the tools used to help students develop several types of skills involved in the classification process. This article presents quantitative data provided by respondents representing 31 distinct LIS masters' programs. We hope it can be used as foundation to pursue the examination of classification instruction in an ever changing information world.
