    Abstract
Reviews the PowerSearch multifile searching software introduced by ORBIT Search Service as it is used for searching patent databases. Looks at its useful features: deduping, patent family grouping, merge, and virtual file merging. Looks at some possible improvements to both PowerSearch itself and to the ORBIT system to accomodate PowerSearch

    Abstract
Describes the creation of a database of citations in a narrow subject area from references downloaded from commercial databases, with customised added indexing, for access by end users. The database was on the subject of biological environmental and physical aspects of arctic wetlands and was compiled by the US Army Corps of Engineers, Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory. Databases were selected from the DIALOG and ORBIT hosts and downloaded records were loaded into a database using Pro-Cite software and searched using Inmagic search software

    Abstract
INSPEC is one of the largest-established and best known bibliographic databases for engineering information. It is available both online and on CD-ROM. INSPEC is produced in Stevenage, UK, by the Institution of Electrical Engineers. It is available on many major online host systems including BRS, Data-Star, Dialog, ESA-IRS, OCLC, Orbit and STN. Discusses the history of INSPEC services since 1898; content and coverage; magnetic tape services; the latest developments in full text and document delivery; and commitment to quality and the INSPEC 2 upgrade

    Abstract
ISDN is an emerging telecommunications system that simultaneously supports formerly disparate media; voice, data, images, video or fax over a single broadband network. Through multitasking, an online searcher can conduct a phone conversation while downloading or retrieving information over the same line. Discusses the development of ISDN and the involvement of MIT. Covers the use of online searching of publicly available databases external to the MIT campus such as DIALOG Information Services, STN, Orbit, Nexis, BRS and Dow Jones News Retrieval. ISDN will enable librarians to download patent diagrams, newspaper pictures, journal charts and graphics. It has the potential to develop into wider band networks with the capacity to handle bulk data, high fidelity audio, high resolution images, moving pictures and hypertext. Makes recommendations for implementing ISDN

    Abstract
Reviews the introduction and growth of the Internet with particular reference to examples of sources of information on chemistry available on the Internet and WWW. Cites the advantage of the Internet as a cheaper way of accessing online database hosts, such as DIALOG, CAS/STN and QUESTEL-ORBIT. Concludes with a discussion of the electronic publishing opportunities of the Internet, noting the 4 major components of such a development: peer review, quality control, copyright and language issues; the role and activities of publishers and periodicals of the future; the future role of the abstracting services, particular in the area of improved quality control; and the users of chemical information

    Abstract
Online searchers today no longer limit themselves to locating references to articles. More and more, they are called upon to locate specific answers to questions such as: Who is my chief competitor for this technology? Who is publishing the most on this subject? What is the geographic distribution of this product? These questions demand answers, not necessarily from record content, but from statistical analysis of the terms in a set of records. Most online services now provide a tool for statistical analysis such as GET on Orbit, ZOOM on ESA/IRS and RANK/RANK FILES on Dialog. With these commands, users can analyze term frequency to extrapolate very precise answers to a wide range of questions. This paper discusses the many uses of term frequency analysis and how it can be applied to areas of competitive intelligence, market analysis, bibliometric analysis and improvements of search results. The applications are illustrated by examples from Dialog

[Ja: 73%]. - B. Öffentliche Bibliotheken: Die Umfrage richtete sich an alle ÖBs der Sektionen I, II und III des DBV. Fragen: (1) Welche Sachkataloge führen Sie? (2) Welche Klassifikationen (Systematiken) liegen dem SyK zugrunde? [ASB: 242; KAB: 333; SfB: 4 (???); SSD: 11; Berliner: 18] (3) Führen Sie ein eigenes Schlagwort-Register zum SyK bzw. zur Klassifikation (Systematik)? (4) Führen Sie den SWK nach ...? [RSWK: 132 (= ca. 60%) anderen Regeln: 93] (5) Seit wann bestehen die jetzigen Sachkataloge? (6) In welcher Form existiern die Sachkataloge? (7) In welchem Umfang wird der Bestand erschlossen? (8) Welche Signaturen verwenden Sie? ???
