    Abstract
Describes a hypertext-based system that integrates the bibliographic information of the library catalogue with user-defined knowledge structures, imports information at the user's command, and offers a dynamic personal information tool for active users. Describes the structure and the content of the data base, and shows how the system can be accommodated to different user groups or individual users.

    Abstract
Suggests a redesign of known-item, personal-name OPACs; corporate authorship and subject sections of OPACs are not included. Corporate authorship is disregarded because corporate author searches of OPACs comprise less than 2% of the total. Subject searching is not included because no new and effective topical catalogue is available. The redesign is user orientated. Objectives to achieve the goals of redesigned catalogs are delineated. Displays of the miniature catalogues (minicats) produces by OPACs are limited to a single screen and computerized techniques for achieving this one-screen objective are described. Findings of research simulating faculty and general use of a university OPAC is used in the new design. Novel error correction techniques are also described. Finally, benefits to users and libraries are presented in terms of effectiveness, productivity and savings in time and money

    Abstract
Reports results of a study to examine the performance of online catalogue searches involving personal names and to recommend improvements to the basic system approach to soliciting user queries and searching for them. The research questions addressed in the study wre: how online systems can chose searching approaches on their own that are likely to produce useful retrieval; how online systems solicit queries from users; and how users respond to an experimental online catalogue that prompts them for the different elements of their personal name queries. Improvements include: the implementation of a new design for online catalogue searching that features search trees; new methods for soliciting user queries bearing personal names; and enlisting the participation of online catalogue users in the evaluation of system prompts, instructions, and messages that request input from them

    Abstract
Describes the general features of a personal portable information interface to OPACs, the framework of which encompasses the attributes of: access; accuracy; attractiveness; assistance; appropriateness; and adaptibility. This model can be used as a standard with which to compare available networked services and resources to specific user populations

    Abstract
The British Library has computerized its paper catalogues into an OPAC. It uses personal computer clients running Windows. Explains reasons for this computerization, how the OPAC works, its architecture, which is built around the BRS/Search full text engine, and describes the software development

    Abstract
Briefly reviews research on users and online catalogues, focusing on the different data gathering methodologies. OLIVE, an enhanced facility for logging transactions and introducing online questionnaires as a front end to a personal computer, was used to examine user intentions, search formulations and success ratings on several commercial systems. Describes a third generation system, OKAPI, which addresses some of the issues raised by the user feedback
