- Abstract
- The authors describe the difficulties of translating classifications from a source language and culture to another language and culture. To demonstrate these problems, kinship terms and concepts from native speakers of fourteen languages were collected and analyzed to find differences between their terms and structures and those used in English. Using the representations of kinship terms in the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) as examples, the authors identified the source of possible lack of mapping between the domain of kinship in the fourteen languages studied and the LCC and DDC. Finally, some preliminary suggestions for how to make translated classifications more linguistically and culturally hospitable are offered.

- Merely translating web sites is not sufficient for serving international clienteles. Web sites need to be "localised". This involves adapting various informational aspects to address the local population in such a way that users understand the content and its use in the context of their own culture. A cultural marker denotes a convention used on a web site to address a particular population. Research in the area of localisation has concentrated on commercial web sites and software. We found that localisation of cultural web sites increases the complexity of the information management issues. As a project of the Section on Audiovisual and Multimedia of IFLA, a kind for localising the The Moving Image Collections (MIC) site was developed, then tested by using it to localise a selection of pages from the web site in French, Spanish, and Arabic. The kit, in the form of a .pdf file, can be used to produce a version of the MIC site localised for any other language or ethnic community.

- Abstract
- Alexandria is an innovation of international impact. It is the only multilingual dictionary for websites and PCs. A double click on a word opens a small window that gives interactive translations between 22 languages and includes meaning, synonyms and associated expressions. It is an ASP application grounded on a semantic network that is portable on any operating system or platform. Behind the application is the Integral Dictionary is the semantic network created by Memodata. Alexandria can be customized with specific vocabulary, descriptive articles, images, sounds, videos, etc. Its domains of application are considerable: e-tourism, online medias, language learning, international websites. Alexandria has also proved to be a basic tool for knowledge management purposes. The application can be customized according to a user or an organization needs. An application dedicated to mobile devices is currently being developed. Future developments are planned in the field of e-tourism in relation with French "pôles de compétitivité".
