    Abstract
Experimental results show that a word-based arithmetic coding scheme can achieve a higher compression performance for Chinese text. However, an arithmetic coding scheme is a fractional-bit compression algorithm which is known to be time comsuming. In this article, we change the direction to study how to cascade the word segmentation model with a faster alternative, the integral-bit compression algorithm. It is shown that the cascaded algorithm is mor suitable for practical usage.

    Abstract
Little research has been reported on how the Internet is being used to source corporate competitive intelligence. An exploratory study was conducted to explore current practice and future potential. A request for participants was posted to business-oriented listservs and Usenet newsgroups. Respondents were sent an open-ended survey which addressed three topics: a) the Internet as a source of competitive edge; b) ways in which the Internet could make their firm mor competitive, and c) security and other usage-related issues from the corporate perspective. Findings suggest that the Internet is being used as a tool for monitoring the external environment, locating distributed experts, engaging in informal know-how trading, and conducting market research. Respondents foresee greater use of the Internet in the context of the competitive intelligence function, and generally have few reservations about using the Internet

    Abstract
Conceptual data modelling (CDM) refers to the phase of the information systems development process that involves the abstraction and representation of the real world data pertinent to an organization. When CDM is properly and rigorously performed, the delivered system is expected to be functionally richer, less error-prone, more fully attuned to meet user needs, mor able to adjust to changing user requirements and less expensive. However, there is little evidence that conceptual data modelling of the enterprise is actually conducted. There is a feeling that the 'corporate reality' is much different. In many organizations, CDM is never employed. In others, it is applied in a haphazard, project to project basis, thus leading to considerable redundancy. The academic community has mainly focused on proposing semantic data models but has not demonstrated a rigorous basis for conceptual data modelling. Specially, the community has failed to show how a conceptual data model can map to an accurate logical data model. Discusses and compares the perspectives of academic and practitioner communities regarding the application of conceptual data modelling

    Abstract
Discussions of the origins of the DDC are ultimately not very satisfying because they do not answer the mor trechant question of why Dewey developed this form of access tool in the first place. That question is especially important because now at more than a century's remove from the beginnings of the system many have concluded that the DDC is essentially outmoded, and that little more than this need be said of it. Yet, this conclusion is far too simplistic an answer to a serious question about the nature of the system and its origins. The intent here is to begin a more comprehensive answer to the question of the DDC's origins, first, by summarising developments in the long history of the DDC; second, by addressing the relationship of the DDC to the 19th century classification of knowledge and the sciences movement which formed a significant broader context in which it was created; third, by addressing its relationship to the rise of library classification theory in the present century; and last, by commenting on the position of the DDC in relationship to the new post-modern library which has begun to appear

    Abstract
Mark Twain described a Classic as 'something that everyone wants to have read and nobody wants to read'. Several of the items in one table may well be in that category, but I must admit that this is an idiosyncratic selection because many of the publications are simply those which interested me and may interest you in the unlikely effect that you have the same interests, prejudices, and peculiar characteristics as myself. Donot, therefore, be surprised if you cannot work out why some of them were included

    Abstract
Presents a study of problem solving activities in a hypermedia representation of a theorem proving problem. The users interacted with a system called HUGH&ME which presented users with 2 representations simultaneously. The respresentations were such that any operations carried out on the other. Describes a quantitative analysis of user activities, and a qualitative analysis of users' responses to questions asked during the session. Discusses the need for hypermedia based tools to support expression and refinement of users' reasoning when engaged in hypermedia-based problem solving activities
