Abstract

Discusses the publishing of books online on the Internet, in the USA. The issues is treated mainly in relation to trade publishers. Outlines various ways in which such publishers have so far used the Internet, for example in the publishing of the full text of works of fiction, for publishing catalogues, and for presenting authors to the public via bulletin boards or electronic conferences. Notes a number or problems which arise: copyright, payment for accessing items, advertising restrictions, and the ease with which the published unit can be tampered with when available on the Internet. Also discusses collaboration and conflicts between publishers and the technology industry

Discusses the basic principles of copyright law with particular reference to electronic media or any materials that are transmitted electronically. Considers the European Community (EC) directives and proposals affecting electronic publishing. Discusses copyright problems relating to electronic works and the legal liability of facilitators. Comments on the opinion, held by some commentators, that the mass transposition of all manner of published works to electronic storage will create insuperable problems for intellectual property rights and that copyright law will collapse

Abstract

From incomplete networks, questions of quality control and copyright, to unified pricing policies, the route to fully electronic scientific communication has many pitfalls. However, change is inevitable, and a quick tour of the models currently being investigated is provided. These include researchers' own electronic publishing ventures. OCLC/AAAS electronic journal 'Current clinical trials', 'IEE's Electronics letters', American Chemical Society (ACS) projects with and without graphics, Elsevier's TULIP (The University Licensing Programme) project to supply 42 materials science journals in electronic form, and the Institute of Physics Publishing future developments including the SuperJournal demonstration project on the SuperJanet network
