Mentions the challenges posed by the abundant availability of digital resources in different media, forms and formats to catalogers in particular and information professionals in general. Discusses with examples the applicability and adequacy of the rules and prescriptions of ISBD(ER) and AACR2, 1998 rev. for cataloging multimedia resources on CD, in view of the fact that the record medium, the physical form and format affect the effectiveness of accessing, retrieval and use of a work.

    Drei Optionen Renate Gömpel, DDB Frankfurt am Main, stellte das starke Engagement Der Deutschen Bibliothek an der »Nationalen und internationalen Standardisierungsarbeit für Bibliotheken« in den Mittelpunkt ihres Referats. Hinsichtlich der vom Standardisierungsausschusses geforderten »Angleichung an internationale Regelwerke« sind für die DDB nunmehr drei Optionen als Schlussfolgerungen aus der Machbarkeitsstudie denkbar: Die »Migration zu existierenden angloamerikanischen Regeln«, die »Mitentwicklung eines neuen, modernen, internationalen Weges« oder die »Neuentwicklung eines modernen deutschösterreichischen Einzelweges«. Die beiden letzten Punkte machen deutlich, dass, entsprechend dem inzwischen revidierten »Nikolausbeschluss«, der früher angestrebte »Umstieg« nun sehr viel differenzierter bedacht wird. Luise Hoffmann, vom HBZ freigestellt für die Leitung der von Der Deutschen Bibliothek in Auftrag gegebenen und von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft finanzierten Machbarkeitsstudie, referierte erste Ergebnisse und den derzeitigen Stand des Projektes, dessen Ziele - Vernetzbarkeit, ungehinderter Datentausch, freie Systemwahlunter bibliothekarischen, organisatorischen, technischen und betriebswirtschaftlichen Aspekten untersucht werden. Schwerpunkte bilden denkbare Modelle und Szenarien eines Umstiegs, der Abgleich der Formate sowie der Regelwerke, eine Untersuchung der laufenden Katalogisierungspraxis sowie der sich abzeichnenden AACR-Weiterentwicklung, schließlich die Konsequenzen eines Umstiegs auf andere bibliothekarische Bereiche und - last but not least - die Wirtschaftlichkeit. Per Online-Fragebogen wurden Bibliothekssysteme und ihre Konfigurierbarkeit auf MARC21 abgefragt, ferner der Anteil an Fremddaten und der Aufwand für deren Nachbearbeitung, schließlich die Verbundfunktionalitäten. Die Differenzen in der Ansetzung von Personen- und Körperschaftsnamen dürften sich durch internationale gemeinsame Normdateien ausgleichen lassen, allerdings ist die Verknüpfung über ID-Nummern in offenen Systemen problematisch. Die AACR, definiert als »multinationales« Regelwerk, eröffnen die Möglichkeit der Ansetzung von Körperschaften in englischer oder deutscher Sprache - auf die eigentlich »modernere« Variante der nach RAK gegebenen Ansetzung in der Originalsprache müsste nach einem Umstieg verzichtet werden -, abgesehen von unterschiedlichen Splittingregeln, die bei konsequenter Umsetzung die Überprüfung und gegebenenfalls das Umschreiben alter Katalogisate inklusive »Umhängen« von Bestandsangaben bei Periodika erforderlich machen. Auch wenn in der DNB-CD vom März 2003 beispielsweise nur 5,8 Prozent und in der LoC nur 4,7 Prozent der Datensätze von solchen Splittings betroffen sind, dürfte der Aufwand, diese herauszufiltern, nicht unerheblich sein, ebenso wie bei den nach MARC21 flachen Hierarchien mehrbändiger Werke, die zum Beispiel in einem integrierten Bibliothekssystem für die Ausleihverbuchung nicht mehr nutzbar wären und nachträglich hierarchisiert werden müssten.

    Abstract
    This paper discusses an innovative approach to teaching cataloguing. At Queensland University of Technology (QUT), students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Library and Information Studies were involved in an independent learning activity which aimed to develop LIS students' foundation knowledge of descriptive cataloguing, while simultaneously encouraging students to think critically about broader issues that would inevitably impact on their role as information professionals. In the self-study program, learning activities included an interactive multimedia CD-ROM and a printed workbook with exercises, augmented by the opportunity for group discussion in weekly tutorials to enable students to share key aspects of their independent learning. Students were asked to critically evaluate the CD-ROM and the workbook and also to develop their own professional views about the arguments for and against the inclusion of cataloguing in the LIS curriculum. The paper presents the outcomes of this pilot project.
