    Abstract
A summary of brain theory is given so far as it is contained within the framework of Localization Theory. Difficulties of this "conventional theory" are traced back to a specific deficiency: there is no way to express relations between active cells (as for instance their representing parts of the same object). A new theory is proposed to cure this deficiency. It introduces a new kind of dynamical control, termed synaptic modulation, according to which synapses switch between a conducting and a non- conducting state. The dynamics of this variable is controlled on a fast time scale by correlations in the temporal fine structure of cellular signals. Furthermore, conventional synaptic plasticity is replaced by a refined version. Synaptic modulation and plasticity form the basis for short-term and long-term memory, respectively. Signal correlations, shaped by the variable network, express structure and relationships within objects. In particular, the figure-ground problem may be solved in this way. Synaptic modulation introduces exibility into cerebral networks which is necessary to solve the invariance problem. Since momentarily useless connections are deactivated, interference between di erent memory traces can be reduced, and memory capacity increased, in comparison with conventional associative memory

    Abstract
The use of interactive videodiscs for preserving, presenting and retrieving pictorial collections in Australia was pioneered at the New South Wales Government Printing Office, Sydney. This project has now stored some 200.000 historical photographs on interactive videodisc, associated with sophisticated microcomputer data bases using the specially developed Just Image software. Videodisc systems to retrieve pictorial material are being used to preserve and present the pictorial collections of various Australian libraries and museums, and standards for the description and indexing of photographs are being developed.

    Abstract
Bibliographic records for microcomputer software in the OCLC Online Union Catalog are evaluated primarily for the purpose of focusing catalogers' attention on selected record areas in need of more consistent treatment. The degree of cataloging inconsistency evident in these records is examined with respect to the application of rules and prescriptions embodied in AACR2 Chapter 9, the ALA Guidelines for cataloging microcomputer software, and the application of Library of Congress subject cataloging practice to these materials. A secondary purpose of this quantitative/qualitative study is to provide a general assessment of the overall composition of microcomputer software cataloging during this transition period between the use of available but disparate sources of descriptive cataloging guidance and their eventual consolidation in the future edition of AACR2.

    Abstract
Once collections of microcomputer software are established in a library, they grow like wildfire, requiring bibliographic control. Control should have been furnished by AACR2, however, Chapter 9, designed to deal with macroor minicomputer software, was difficult to apply to microcomputer software. Responding to demand from the field, a Task Force of ALA's Committee Cataloging: Description and Access devised Guidelines for Using AACR2 Chapter 9 for Cataloging Microcomputer Software, which was approved at the 1984 Midwinter Conference and is now available for purchase from RTSD. The Guidelines deal with three problems raised by application of Chapter 9 to microcomputer software: teminology; description of the physical manifestation of an item; and notes describing related hardware. A fourth problem concerns which materials are covered by the Guidelines. Each of these is explored and evaluated.

    Abstract
The delivery of library reference service can be practically supplemented through the appropriate incorporation and use of software tools commonly reffered to an expert system. The level of support such systems can affort the reference service organisation is dependent on the degree of complexity characteristic of the rule-based programming techniques used to develop a particular system and the size of its knowledge data base. Since most expert systems are designed to simulate the process of problem-solving practiced by an expert in a given field, an expert system designed to fully emulate library reference work must have the potential to respond to a wide subject range of questions with varying degrees of response adequacy. Describes a microcomputer-based reference expert-type system.

    Abstract
To an overwhelming extent, storage and retrieval systems were designed for information intermediaries who were specialists in formal, controlled documentation languages (e.g. classification systems, indexing languages) and who were then trained to utilize the query language of each retrieval system. However, with the advent of the microcomputer, there now exists, in the information retrieval industry, an obvious will to tackle both the professional and the personal information markets, as evidences by their more sophisticated yet more user-friendly systems and by the design and marketing of all sorts of interface software (front-end, gateway, intermediary). In order to make full advantage of these systems, the user must be able to master three different languages: the natural language of the discipline, the indexing language, and the system's query language. The author defines and characterizes each of these languages and identifies their issues and trends in the IR cycle and specifically in public online search services. Finally he proposes a theoretical model for the analysis of IR languages and suggests a few research avenues

    Abstract
This review covers (1) the literature published in 1985, 1986 and 1987. It is, however, not a comprehensive review. However, two papers published in 1983 and 1984 have been included. (2) It covers only library and information science literature. (3) It does not include descriptions of commercial software packages

    Abstract
The PRO-CITE and BIBLIO-LINK software packages make the process of compiling bibliographies and internal data bases much easier than when all the steps in the process were manual (compiling, typing). The 2 programs work on records that have been downloaded from on-line data bases. BIBLIO-LINK analyses the downloaded records to determine document type and stores the data in the appropriate PRO-CITE workform, putting fields from the downloaded record into the correct PRO-CITE fields.

    Abstract
The task facing the designers of information retrieval (IR) systems can be stated very simply: to produce the right kind of system with the right components at the right price. In practice, however, this task is greatly hindered by a lack of understanding and communication between the different groups of specialists working on different parts of the system - a problem exacerbated by the fact that each group uses a different jargon, so preventing the exchange of ideas and expertise. There is thus a need for a comprehensive, unified overview of practical computer-based retrieval, and this book provides one. It describes the various parts and their alternative forms, the relationships between them and how these affect the working of the system as a whole. Topics covered include: user, software, knowledge representation, expert systems, database management systems, hardware, user interfaces.

    Abstract
Several partial processes in information and documentation work can now be carried out at the workplace because of the rapid development of decentralised minicomputer and microcomputer technology. In this field particulary suitable areas of application are the subject area or topic-oriented data banks for individual scientists or small research groups, characterised by constant availibility and high topicality. An effective and user-friendly software suited to consistent problem-solving must be created.
