    Abstract
The author provides historical background useful in understanding the title pages of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century German dissertations. Images of title pages are included, with details of bibliographic description, and Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) coding, as well as links to examples of catalog records in the Yale Law Library catalog, MORRIS. This article also includes comments on Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, Second Edition (AACR2) Rule 21.27 regarding the problem of authorship in early dissertations.

    Abstract
Conference proceedings are difficult to catalog, and even when the cataloging is correct, the records may be difficult to find. The rules for cataloging conference proceedings are necessarily complex in order to accommodate a wide variety of items. Changes in the rules have resulted in inconsistent records. Local decisions are necessary for minimizing inconsistencies within local catalogs. A detailed account of one library's decisions in regard to one particular problem, that of classification, is given to illustrate the value of adhering to national standards as well as the possibility of occasional deviation.

    Abstract
One of the most common errors in cataloguing library materials involves miscoding of the nonfiling indicator of title fields. Notes the extent of the problem and its negative effect on searching in the library's online catalogue and surveys how librarians have approached solutions to the problems. Describes how the major library automation system address this problem

    Abstract
This paper proposes, as a backlog reduction strategy, a national cooperative cataloging program among libraries with major collections in the Slavic and East European languages and in the languages of the former Soviet Union. The long-standing problem of cataloging backlogs is discussed, including a brief discussion of some of the other ways that have been used to address the problem. The proposal for a cooperative effort is outlined and some of the cataloging issues to be considered are discussed.

    Abstract
Dominican University's Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) was one of a funnel group of graduate schools of library and information science selected to test RDA. A seminar specifically for this purpose was conducted from August to December 2010. Fifteen students participated in the test, creating records in AACR2 and in RDA, encoding them in the MARC format, and responding to the required questionnaires. In addition to record creation, the students were also asked to submit a final paper in which they described their experiences and recommended whether or not to accept RDA as a replacement for AACR2.

    Abstract
Considers the problem of applying standard concepts of cataloguing and bibliographic control to electronic media by studying the degree of fit between the Standford Integrated Digital Library Project (SDLP) and both the USMARC format and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Notes the lack of fit of both USMARC and TEI but stresses the advantages of the latter due its lack of dependency on 3 digit tags and its use of SGML conventions

    Abstract
At the University of Nevada, Las Vergas (UNLV), increases in student population and the creation of new academic programmes resulted in the recruitment of additional teaching faculty. This growth increased acquisitions budgets and collections. Library staff then faced a cataloguing backlog of hundreds of video titles. Describes how the library solved the backlog problem by implementing 'cataloguing shortcuts'. Outlines the previous cataloguing process and the elements which were streamlined by implementing shortcuts. The number of videos catalogued went from 604 in the 1991/2 academic year (prior to the shortcuts) to 804 titles in 1992/3 and 883 titles in 1993/4. The Special Formats Cataloguer now has time to work on formats other than video

    Abstract
The FRBR model is by many considered to be an important contribution to the next generation of bibliographic catalogues, but a major challenge for the library community is how to use this model on already existing MARC-based bibliographic catalogues. This problem requires a solution for the interpretation and conversion of MARC records, and a tool for this kind of conversion is developed as a part of the Norwegian BIBSYS FRBR project. The tool is based on a systematic approach to the interpretation and conversion process and is designed to be adaptable to the rules applied in different catalogues.

    Abstract
The author revisits the development of RDA from its inception in 2005 through to its initial release in 2010. The development effort is set in the context of an evolving digital environment that was transforming both the production and dissemination of information resources and the technologies used to create, store, and access data describing those resources. The author examines the interplay between strategic commitments to align RDA with new conceptual models, emerging database structures, and metadata developments in allied communities, on the one hand, and compatibility with AACR2 legacy databases on the other. Aspects of the development effort examined include the structuring of RDA as a resource description language, organizing the new standard as a working tool, and refining guidelines and instructions for recording RDA data.

    Abstract
National exercises for the evaluation of research activity by universities are becoming regular practice in ever more countries. These exercises have mainly been conducted through the application of peer-review methods. Bibliometrics has not been able to offer a valid large-scale alternative because of almost overwhelming difficulties in identifying the true author of each publication. We will address this problem by presenting a heuristic approach to author name disambiguation in bibliometric datasets for large-scale research assessments. The application proposed concerns the Italian university system, comprising 80 universities and a research staff of over 60,000 scientists. The key advantage of the proposed approach is the ease of implementation. The algorithms are of practical application and have considerably better scalability and expandability properties than state-of-the-art unsupervised approaches. Moreover, the performance in terms of precision and recall, which can be further improved, seems thoroughly adequate for the typical needs of large-scale bibliometric research assessments.
