- Abstract
- Dieser Band gibt einen Überblick über 500 Jahre deutsche Buchhandelsgeschichte, über das Schreiben, Herstellen, Verkaufen und Lesen von Büchern. Angesprochen werden nicht nur Fachleute, sondern alle, die Interesse an Büchern und Literatur haben. Buchhandelsgeschichte bedeutet für Wittmann nicht nur eine Geschichte der (Sortiments-)Buchhandlungen. Buchhandel meint hier die Gesamtprozesse der Vermittlung von geistigem Kulturgut eines Autors über die materielle Speicherung dieses geistigen Produkts in Form von Büchern, die Finanzierung und Verbreitung durch Verlage und Sortimentsbuchhandlungen bis hin zum Leser. Wittmann teilt das von ihm behandelte halbe Jahrtausend seit Erfindung des Buchdrucks in zwölf Epochen auf und geht in jedem seiner Kapitel eben nicht nur auf Fragen der Herstellung und Verbreitung von Büchern ein (also die eigentliche Druck-, Verlags- und Buchhandelsgeschichte), sondern stellt auch jeweils fundierte Reflexionen über das Bild und die Rolle von Autoren sowie die Erwartungshaltungen, Vorlieben und Kenntnisse der Leser an. Dieser weite Blickwinkel bedingt natürlich, dass das dargebotenen Material für die jeweiligen Epochen nicht sehr ausführlich sein kann. Wittmann beschränkt sich häufig auf prägnante Beispiele für die jeweiligen Forschungsperspektiven. Seine Vorgehensweise bietet jedoch andererseits einen großen Vorteil: Dieses Buch ist eine interessante Lektüre nicht nur für Leute, die sich direkt für Buchhandelsgeschichte interessieren, sondern auch für solche, die einen Blick auf den Wandel des Autoren- und Leserbildes in der deutschen Gesellschaft der letzten 500 Jahre werfen wollen.

- Abstract
- Numa Praetorius war das Pseudonym des Straßburger Juristen und Schriftstellers Eugen Wilhelm (1866-1951). Er benutzte es in den Jahren 1899 bis 1932 für seine Beiträge zu deutschen, französischen und italienischen Zeitschriften, Jahrbüchern und Serien, in denen er sich fast stets zu homosexuellen Themen äußerte. Am Anfang der 1970er Jahre entstand in der BRD und in Westberlin eine Emanzipationsbewegung der Schwulen, bald auch der Lesben, die aus der studentischen Protestbewegung gegen den Vietnamkrieg hervorgegangen war. Schon früh entdeckte sie ihr Interesse an der Geschichte der Schwulenverfolgung und -emanzipation, fand in Bibliotheken und Archiven die Bände des Jahrbuchs für sexuelle Zwischenstufen als beste Quelle zum Einstieg in die Thematik, und darin die "Bibliographie der Homosexualität", die ein "Dr. jur. Numa Praetorius" beinahe in jedem Jahrgang geschrieben hatte. Diese Bibliographie war eigentlich keine. Es handelt sich vielmehr um eine Sammlung manchmal sehr umfangreicher kritischer Referate zu Büchern und Zeitschriftenaufsätzen zur Homosexualität. Im Fall des Buches Homosexualität und Strafgesetz, das ein Rostocker Juraprofessor Wachenfeld als Warnung vor der Schwulenemanzipation verfasst hatte, füllte die Besprechung mehr als hundert Seiten im Jahrbuch von 1902. Das war Numas Rekord, dabei war Wachenfelds Buch nicht viel dicker (150 Seiten).

- Der jetzt vorliegende erste Band der International Bibliography of Bibliographies in Library and Information Science and Related Fields weist für den Zeitraum von 1945 bis 1978 ca. 10.000 Bibliographien zum Thema Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft nach. Auch verwandte Gebiete, wie beispielsweise Archivwesen, Verlagswesen, Buchhandel, Geschichte der Schrift, Buchgeschichte, Papiergeschichte, Geschichte des Buchdrucks, Buchkunst oder Urheberrecht finden Berücksichtigung. Damit ist diese Bibliographie, die in zwei Bänden mit zusammen ca. 20.000 Einträgen den gesamten Zeitraum vom Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs bis 1990 abdeckt, die umfassendste ihrer Art. Als Quellengrundlage für den ersten Band dienten zahlreiche internationale und nationale Bibliographien, Fachbibliographien und Enzyklopädien für den Bereich der Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft, themenrelevante Fachzeitschriften sowie eine bereits 1985 von Henryk Sawoniak in Polen veröffentlichte einschlägige Bibliographie. Mehr als ein Drittel der aufgenommenen Bibliographien erschien selbständig in Buchform, jeweils etwa ein Viertel in Zeitschriften oder als Teil eines Buches. Bd.2 weist für den Zeitraum 1979-1990 mehr als 10.000 Bibliographien zu den Themen Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft, Buchhandel und Verlage, Reprographie, Buchkunst, Urheberrecht, Geschichte des Buches und des Drucks, des Alphabets und der Schrift, der Papierherstellung und vielen weiteren Randgebieten des Bibliothekswesens nach.

- Abstract
- Die Schweizerische Landesbibliothek (SLB) hat in den 90er-Jahren eine grundlegende Reorganisation ihrer Strukturen und Arbeitsabläufe in Angriff genommen, um die Qualität ihrer Dienstleistungen zu verbessern. Dazu gehörte auch die Verbesserung des bibliografischen Zugriffs auf die Bestände. In vielen Bereichen mangelte es am Anschluss an die internationalen bibliografischen Standards. Eine Evaluierung dieser Situation führte beispielsweise 1993 zur Einführung von USMARC (jetzt MARC 21) als Austauschformat, zum Ersatz eines auf der Universalen Dezimalklassifikation basierenden Indexierungssystems durch die Schlagwortnormdatei (SWD) und die Regeln für den Schlagwortkatalog (RSWK) 1998 und schließlich zur Übernahme der Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules (AACR2) für die alphabetische Katalogisierung. Die letzte Stufe dieser Reorganisation war die Renovierung des Bibliotheksgebäudes selbst, die 1999 begann und 2001 abgeschlossen wurde. Dadurch konnten die Freihandbestände ausgeweitet und verbessert werden; der dafür notwendige Bestandsausbau begann bereits 1997. Dabei sollten auch die Zugriffsmöglichkeiten auf die Bestände verbessert werden. Deshalb führte man 1998 eine Untersuchung zur Auswahl eines Klassifikationssystems durch, das zur Aufstellung der folgenden Freihandbestände geeignet sein sollte: - die Forschungsbibliothek Schweiz (FBCH): eine Sammlung von etwa 30.000 Bänden zu den Themen Kultur, Politik, Geschichte, Umwelt und technische Entwicklung in der Schweiz, - der Lesesaal: eine Sammlung von 10.000 Nachschlagewerken und - das Schweizerische Literaturarchiv: etwa 10.000 literarische Werke von schweizer Autoren und dazu gehörender Sekundärliteratur. Neben der Nutzung als Aufstellungssystem sollte die Klassifikation für zwei weitere Zwecke geeignet sein. Eine sachliche Zugangsmöglichkeit zusätzlich zur Aufstellung sollte durch den elektronischen Bibliothekskatalog angeboten werden, indem die Dokumente durch ein entsprechendes Feld für die Klassifikation im Katalogisierungssystem recherchierbar wurden. Außerdem wurde eine Umstellung der Nationalbibliografie Das Schweizer Buch (SB) zu ihrem hundertsten Geburtstag 2001 geplant. Da die Bibliografie seit langem unverändert geblieben war, sollte ein Klassifikationsschema eingeführt werden, das mit den Empfehlungen der IFLA und der UNESCO übereinstimmte.

Wiesenmüller): "Im Jahr 1999 legte Friedrich Nestler, der frühere Direktor des Instituts für Bibliothekswissenschaft an der Humboldt-Universität, eine viel beachtete Neubearbeitung von Georg Schneiders »Handbuch der Bibliographie« (1. Auflage 1923) vor. Konsequenterweise hat er nun auch Schneiders »Einführung in die Bibliographie« (1936) bearbeitet. Bei diesem Text handelte es sich ursprünglich um den theoretischen Teil des »Handbuchs«, der bei den Rezensenten auf wenig Anklang gestoßen war. Für die 4. Auflage (1930) wurde er gestrichen, erschien jedoch sechs Jahre später in umgearbeiteter Form als eigenständige Publikation. In Schneider sieht Nestler einen direkten Vorgänger für seine - nicht zuletzt durch die Forschung in der DDR geprägte - Sichtweise der Bibliographie als ein »soziales Phänomen« (Seite IX), das sich »aus der kommunikativen Funktion der verzeichneten Texte ergibt« (Seite 28). Theoretische Modelle der Bibliographie machen denn auch den größten Teil des ersten Hauptkapitels aus. Dieses trägt zwar noch dieselbe Überschrift (»Begriff der Bibliographie«) wie bei Schneider, ist aber von 5 auf über 60 Seiten angewachsen und beinhaltet nun weit mehr als nur die Wortgeschichte. In einem Abschnitt zur bibliothekarischen Ausbildung kritisiert Nestler - ganz zu Recht - die traditionelle Vermittlung des Themas Bibliographie als bloße Abfolge einer langen Reihe bibliographischer Hilfsmittel, deren Charakteristika Stück für Stück zu erlernen sind. Dass das Aufkommen der elektronischen Medien hier zu einem »Wechsel der Optik« (Seite 16) geführt habe und seitdem mehr Wert auf eine theoretische Grundlage gelegt werde, kann die Rezensentin aus ihrer eigenen Erfahrung allerdings nicht bestätigen. ... Insgesamt gesehen bleibt die Neubearbeitung an vielen Stellen unbefriedigend. Dennoch ist es zu begrüßen, dass sie überhaupt erschienen ist: Gerade weil man sich an manchem reiben kann, könnte Nestlers Arbeit Anlass sein, sich von neuem mit dem Thema Bibliographie zu beschäftigen."
