    Abstract
The database of the Research Libraries Group's Research Libraries Information Network contains some 25 million records in all USMARC formats for bibliographic and authorities data, as well as a number of additional files for specialized data. These records include source data from the Library of Congress and other national bibliographic agencies, and records contributed by RLG member institutions, and are used both for technical processing and in support of RLG's cooperative programs. Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Cyrillic vernacular records are included in the central database; work on Hebrew is in progress. Future developments will result in the addition of diverse kinds of data, including nonbibliographic data, to RLIN.

    Abstract
Although the Name Authority Cooperative Project (NACO) is now almost ten years old, little has been written about it from the perspective of NACO participants. This article provides a narrative case study of the effects of NACO on one academic research library, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The decision to accept NACO membership, NACO training at the Library of Congress, post-training implementation at the University of Illinois and effects on work flow, productivity and morale are portrayed in this description. It is hoped that the information contained here can provide more insight into the pros and cons of NACO membership that could be generalized to any library.

    Abstract
Examines a simpler cataloguing format offered by PCs, without disturbing compatibility, using A-Z cataloguing rules for data input, category codes for tagging and computer-supported data input through windows. Gives numerous examples of catalogue entries, basing techniques on certain category schemes set out by Klaus Haller and Hans Popst. Examines catalogue entries in respect of categories of data bases for authors and corporate names, titles, single volume works, serial issues of collected works, and limited editions of works in several volumes.

    Abstract
The cooperative cataloging of library materials is a centuriesold concept. Efforts at cooperative cataloging have historically attempted to reduce cataloging costs while maintaining a high degree of accuracy. This paper outlines the experience of the University of Pittsburgh with Enhance, the OCLC cooperative project designed to improve the quality of the OCLC database.

    Abstract
The classification work of 26 librarians and 9 students was studied by a thinking aloud method. The structure of their work was analysed into 2 parts that corresond with the stages presented in the ISO standard 5963. Documents were analysed by different concepts of "aboutness". Identification of the principal concepts present in the subject has led into a hypothesis about 3 conceptual systems. Expressing the concepts in terms of classification systems was found to be difficult with UDC because of many unclear synonyms in different parts of the schedules.

    Abstract
Reflects on the situation a few years ago in the field of subject access in libraries and evaluates the present situation in the light of recent developments. Discusses factors which characterise the situation in West Germany today. Examines the organisation of cooperative subject access during the course of which various relationships are explored, and the dovetailing of the network and local library operations, and the formation of local and on-line catalogues are discussed. Describes the relationship between formal and subject access; discusses cooperation in the allocation of catchwords, and cooperation in classified subject access; and addresses 2 forms of cooperative subject access

    Abstract
The development of excellent reference skills is an art, and requires skill. Knowledge of how reference works are organised and work is of utmost importance. The librarian is also required to appreciate and understand user needs. It is necesary to solicit the real uestion, which often is not the one asked.
