    Abstract
As the distance between remote user and librarian continues to grow, we are being forced to re-examine the way we teach librarians to work. This article suggests that in today's workplace, librarians must be adept at both technical as well as cooperative skills. It alos suggests that we must be prepared to teach librarians how to work in collaborative environments that promote clients' needs. Towards this end, we built a computer-supported cooperative problem solving environment designed to help librarians and remote users work together in performing an online search. We believe that online searching and cooperative skills are highly interrelatedad, as such, can be exercised more effectively in a computer-supported cooperative environment. The environment encourages cooperative work, and yet monitors both individual and group performance. Results from our studies indicated that groups using the interface demonstrated more effective skills than groups who performed the same task face-to-face. Furthermore, the Computer-Supported Cooperative Training environment showed that the competencies relating to group problem description and generation of alternative solutions were the most predictive of successful group interaction

    Abstract
The aim of this book is to highlight the relationship between knowledge representation and language in artificial intelligence, and in particular on the way in which the choice of representation influences the language used to discuss a problem - and vice versa. Opening with a discussion of knowledge representation methods, and following this with a look at reasoning methods, the author begins to make his case for the intimate relationship between language and representation. He shows how each representation method fits particularly well with some reasoning methods and less so with others, using specific languages as examples. The question of representation change, an important and complex issue about which very little is known, is addressed. Dr Hodgson gathers together recent work on problem solving, showing how, in some cases, it has been possible to use representation changes to recast problems into a language that makes them easier to solve. The author maintains throughout that the relationships that this book explores lie at the heart of the construction of large systems, examining a number of the current large AI systems from the viewpoint of representation and language to prove his point.

    Abstract
In many companies, the use of information retrieval systems is substantially augmented by 'word-of-mouth' communication. In such a system individuals use their valuable experience and understanding of one another's needs in order to achieve a very precise filtering and directing of information. The perception which these individuals bring to bear represent a form of corporate knowledge. The RADA (Research And Development Advisor) system has been developed at the University of Sunderland to perform information retrieval in a research and development environment. A component is currently being developed to emulate a word-of-mouth system. This work involves a combination of techniques and themes from the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Supported Cooperative Work to provide a design for a system which will provide a more intuitive form of information storage and retrieval. This paper will describe the architecture and objectives of the RADA system, and report on progress to date with the work

    Abstract
The value of an organization is given not just by its tangible assets but also by the knowledge embodied in its employees and in its internal and external structures. Explicit knowledge can be shared as information and is easy to handle. Tacit knowledge has been neglected by effectiveness-orientied management techniques but is crucial for both the operational efficiency and the core competence of an organization. This book provided a survey of the use of information technology for knowledge management, and its chapters present specific research on how technologies such as computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), workflow, and groupware can support the creation and sharing of knowledge in organizations

    Abstract
Although assisting and advising have always been central to the role of the reference librarian, the nature of reference work has evolved as a result of the proliferation of electronic resources and their impact on information access. One consequence has been the growing importance of library training in reference work. Considers the place of cooperative teaching, electronic teaching, innovative reference services, reference services outside the library, networking technologies, organization of electronic information and organizational ethos

    Abstract
The catalguing project at the Hochschule der Künste ran from 1992-95. The computerised catalogue was based on RAK-Musik. Entries are in the Berlin-Brandenburg cooperative and are accessible supra-regionally. 11.000 titles were covered, of church music mainly from the 16th and 17th centuries and other classical and romantic works. Cataloguing old material involves research into dating. The project should assist other score cataloguers

    Abstract
At the time being, there is a lot of different systems claiming to be either multimedia, hypermedia, or supporting collaborative, cooperative work. In this paper, a first attempt to clearify the notions of these concepts is tried. Multimedia content, hyperstructure organization and cooperative access will be identified as different features of an intelligent document. These features will be discussed under formal, information technology and implementation aspects

    Abstract
The authors trace the history and development of the name authority and subject work components of the National Coordinate Cataloging Operations (NACO) and characterize the growth of its membership and activity scope, file breadth and size, quality and quantity standards, and governance. Summary statistical tables and lists of all participating libraries with their authority record (National Union Catalog) symbols accompany the text. Also included are reflections on the benefits of participation and speculation on future directions cooperative authority work could take

    Abstract
Describes briefly the first project for cooperative cataloguing in Russia, in 1995, with particular reference to aims of the future Russian Centre of Cooperative Cataloguing (RCCC). Focuses on the technical issues and common principles for the functioning of the scheme, notably the use of: common national cataloguing rules based on ISBD; a national communication format based on the Russian customization of UNIMARC; and a common program and technical support of the system. Illustrates the scheme designed to allow use of foreign cataloguing data from sources such as OCLC
