    Abstract
    Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to survey the treatment of relationships, relationship expressions and the ways in which they manifest themselves in image descriptions. Design/methodology/approach - The term "relationship" is construed in the broadest possible way to include spatial relationships ("to the right of"), temporal ("in 1936," "at noon"), meronymic ("part of"), and attributive ("has color," "has dimension"). The intentions of these vaguely delimited categories with image information, image creation, and description in libraries and archives is complex and in need of explanation. Findings - The review brings into question many generally held beliefs about the relationship problem such as the belief that the semantics of relationships are somehow embedded in the relationship term itself and that image search and retrieval solutions can be found through refinement of word-matching systems. Originality/value - This review has no hope of systematically examining all evidence in all disciplines pertaining to this topic. It instead focusses on a general description of a theoretical treatment in Library and Information Science.

    Abstract
    A statistical learning approach to assigning controlled index terms is presented. In this approach, there are two processes: (1) the learning process and (2) the indexing process. The learning process constructs a relationship between an index term and the words relevant and irrelevant to it, based on the positive training set and negative training set, and those not indexed by it, respectively. The indexing process determines whether an index term is assigned to a certain document, based on the relationship constructed by the learning process, and the text found in the document. Furthermore, a learning feedback technique is introduced. This technique used in the learning process modifies the relationship between an index term and its relevant and irrelevant words to improve the learning performance and, thus, the indexing performance. Experimental results have shown that the statistical learning approach and the learning feedback technique are practical means to automatic indexing of controlled index terms

    Abstract
    Studies the value of scientific articles' titles and abstracts as sources of terms for document indexing in relation to 6 areas of knowledge: library and information science, medicine, chemistry, biology, psychology and physics, indexed in the databases ISOC, IME and ICYT of the CSIC. Also examines the syntagmatic structures of the indexing terms found in the field 'descriptors'. as well as the relationship between length of document and number of descriptors. Concludes that if the abstracts are not well made and the titles are not precise, they are not definitive sources for the extractions of concepts; the most common syntactic structure is the noun phrase, followed by noun+adjective and noun+noun; and no significant relationship was found between length of document and number of descriptors assigned to it

    Abstract
    We propose a method for improving access to scientific literature by analyzing the content of research papers beyond citation links and topic tracking. Our model relies on a typology of explicit semantic relations. These relations are instantiated in the abstract/introduction part of the papers and can be identified automatically using textual data and external ontologies. Preliminary results show a promising precision in unsupervised relationship classification.

    Abstract
    Statistical association measures have been widely applied in information retrieval research, usually employing a clustering of documents or terms on the basis of their relationships. Applications of the association measures for term clustering include automatic thesaurus construction and query expansion. This research evaluates the similarity of six association measures by comparing the relationship and behavior they demonstrate in various analyses of a test corpus. Analysis techniques include comparisons of highly ranked term pairs and term clusters, analyses of the correlation among the association measures using Pearson's correlation coefficient and MDS mapping, and an analysis of the impact of a term frequency on the association values by means of z-score. The major findings of the study are as follows: First, the most similar association measures are mutual information and Yule's coefficient of colligation Y, whereas cosine and Jaccard coefficients, as well as X**2 statistic and likelihood ratio, demonstrate quite similar behavior for terms with high frequency. Second, among all the measures, the X**2 statistic is the least affected by the frequency of terms. Third, although cosine and Jaccard coefficients tend to emphasize high frequency terms, mutual information and Yule's Y seem to overestimate rare terms
