    Abstract
One of the most common errors in cataloguing library materials involves miscoding of the nonfiling indicator of title fields. Notes the extent of the problem and its negative effect on searching in the library's online catalogue and surveys how librarians have approached solutions to the problems. Describes how the major library automation system address this problem

    Abstract
This paper proposes, as a backlog reduction strategy, a national cooperative cataloging program among libraries with major collections in the Slavic and East European languages and in the languages of the former Soviet Union. The long-standing problem of cataloging backlogs is discussed, including a brief discussion of some of the other ways that have been used to address the problem. The proposal for a cooperative effort is outlined and some of the cataloging issues to be considered are discussed.

    Abstract
Considers the problem of applying standard concepts of cataloguing and bibliographic control to electronic media by studying the degree of fit between the Standford Integrated Digital Library Project (SDLP) and both the USMARC format and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). Notes the lack of fit of both USMARC and TEI but stresses the advantages of the latter due its lack of dependency on 3 digit tags and its use of SGML conventions

    Abstract
Outlines the Coalition for Networked Information's (CNI) analysis of the networked electronic environment where the chief problem for the users appears to be finding resources on the Internet. Presents the CNI's arguments for surrogates and describes one approach to the identification and description of resources on the Internet: the OCLC Internet Cataloguing Project

    Abstract
At the University of Nevada, Las Vergas (UNLV), increases in student population and the creation of new academic programmes resulted in the recruitment of additional teaching faculty. This growth increased acquisitions budgets and collections. Library staff then faced a cataloguing backlog of hundreds of video titles. Describes how the library solved the backlog problem by implementing 'cataloguing shortcuts'. Outlines the previous cataloguing process and the elements which were streamlined by implementing shortcuts. The number of videos catalogued went from 604 in the 1991/2 academic year (prior to the shortcuts) to 804 titles in 1992/3 and 883 titles in 1993/4. The Special Formats Cataloguer now has time to work on formats other than video

    Abstract
Describes a new approach to describing bibliographic entities aimed at fulfilling all the functions of the catalogue in the online environment. While it is assumed that the basic unit of description is the item in hand and records describing items would fulfil the finding, identifying, choosing and locating functions; super records, which are based on the concept of 'super works', would fulfil the collocating function in a more meaningful way. This approach is a solution to the problem of the same work appearing in various manifestations and formats. Super records for voluminous works include attributes that are common to different versions of a work and are linked to bibliographic records for items. Describes a prototype catalogue of super records that has been developed and made available on the Web to introduce the advantages, limitations and possible consequences of the concept on cataloguing principles, MARC and Z39.50

    Abstract
Library science may well have an essential role to play in efficiently organising the huge amount of Internet information available in the various scientific disciplines. The basic problem is to develop a cataloguing theory sufficiently flexible to cope with the impact of an ever changing store of network data. Such a theory would abondon the utopian idea of a 'catalogue of ctalogues', seeking instead to match each specific user query to the most appropriate catalogue. Examines 2 important USA projects for cataloguing network resources: Digital Libraries Research (funded by the National Science Foundation), which uses a combination of search engines to retrieve net data; and the Internet Public Library. Lists the Management and Library Schools now on the WWW

    Abstract
Like many other foreign names Ethiopian personal names pose problems in cataloging because of their unique form and composition. People other than Ethiopians might not even be aware of this problem. AACR2 and IFLA's document on personal names are also not much help in this regard. This paper attempts to deal with the unique problem of cataloging Ethiopian names and the necessity of using transliteration techniques for easy filing and exhaustive retrieval.
