Nach den Auffassungen einiger einflußreicher Bibliothekare und Bibliographen anscheinend ja! Und was ist Belletristik heute, einige Jahrzehnte nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg? Sind Böll, Grass, Uwe Johnson, der 1984 gestorben ist, Siegfried Lenz und Martin Walser, um wiederum nur einige stellvertretend zu nennen, wirklich Verfasser von Belletristik?     Abstract
    CD-ROMs sind in mancher Hinsicht kleine Loch-Ness-Monster: man kann viele Artikel über sie lesen, sie werden oft abgebildet, sind aber selten in Aktion zu sehen. Der enorme Speicherplatz (bis zu 650 MB) der auf einer CD-ROM zur Verfügung steht,fasziniert sowohl Benutzer als auch Produzenten, es gibt aber viele Hindernisse, wenn man dieses neue Medium wirklich nutzen will. Die allzu kluge Marketingstrategie der verkäufer ist wahrscheinlich der größte Feind dieser optischen Platten. Auf der anderen Seite findet man mehr und mehr Beispiele guter Benutzeroberflächen, schneller Suchsysteme und sogar Hoffnungen auf einheitliche Standards für Treiberprogramme u. dgl. Die Hauptabteilung Information + Dokumentation der Henkel KGaA produzierte bereits 1986 eine Test-CD-ROM, die den Online-Katalog der Chemischen Bibliothek enthielt. Regelmäßig benutzt wird auch eine Reihe anderer CD-ROMs, einige wenige liegen noch in einem Dornröschenschlaf, bis auch die Endbenutzer selbst in der vorgesehenen Mediothek (als Teilstück der Chemischen Bibliothek) in ihnen recherchieren können. Da die meisten auf CD-ROM verfügbaren Daten auch online recherchierbar sind, werden Vor- und Nachteile der CD-ROMs diskutiert. Innerhalb einer Firma ist die Datenspeicherung auf einem Großrechner in vielen Fällen nach wie vor günstiger, wenn die Daten für firmeninterne Recherchen beschafft werden können

    Abstract
    Am 31. Juli vor 200 Jahren starb Denis Diderot. Er war einer der einflußreichsten, intelligentesten und witzigsten Autoren nicht nur des an Charakteren seiner Art reichen 18. Jahrhunderts. Die "Enzyklopädie" war sein Hauptwerk, wenngleich manches seiner oft erst posthum erschienenen Nebenwerke uns heute noch mit größerer Frische und Originalität entgegentritt - wie seine Romanejakob und sein Herr", "Die Nonne", seine Erzählungen, Essays und Abhandlungen. Dem Diderot gewidmeten "Insel-Almanach auf das Jahr 1984", der eine höchst appetitanregende Lektüre bietet, haben wir die Illustrationen dieser Seite entnommen: Greuzes Kreidezeichnung Diderots (unten) und die zeitgenössische Kupfertafel zu dem Enzyklopädie-Artikel "Schreibkunst" Auf unserer Buchseite (IV) zeigt Ralph Rainer Wuthenow eine eben neu erschienene Auswahl von Diderots Briefen an. Unter den Dunkelmännern & -frauen, die heute so zahlreich aus dem Boden schießen, gilt Aufklärung als trocken und seicht; wohin man auch bei Diderot blickt, immer trifft man ihn, einen der größten Aufklärer, als einen Autor an, der solche Vorurteile glanzvoll Lügen straft.
