    Abstract
    In der Informationsgesellschaft kommen auf Bibliotheken und Spezialbibliotheken insbesondere neue Aufgaben zu. Automatisierung, Digitalisierung und Virtualisierung sind die Entwicklungsstadien, in denen die Bibliotheken die infrastrukturellen Grundlagen zur Übernahme neuer Funktionalitäten legen. Die Bibliothek wird neben den gewohnten Tätigkeiten dann auch Funktionen eines Dokumentationszentrums, eines Multimediazentrums und eines Verlages übernehmen können. Am Beispiel der Bibliothek der Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung wird die funktionale Erweiterung und Anpassung an die durch die digitale Revolution und neue Telekommunikationstechnologien geschaffenen Bedingungen geschildert.

    Abstract
    Informationen zu vermitteln heißt, Antworten auf Fragen anderer zu finden. Informationsvermittlung ist rechercheorientierte Informationsarbeit, die darauf abzielt, aktive Hilfestellung bei der Minimierung von Wissensdefiziten zu leisten. Die fortschreitende Technisierung des Informationssektors, die umfassende Digitalisierung öffentlich zugänglicher Datenbestände sowie die Zunahme an elektronischen Übertragungswegen und Zugriffsmöglichkeiten hat dazu beigetragen, dass heute mehr Informationsangebote zur Verfügung stehen und genutzt werden können als je zuvor. Diese Ausweitung des Informationsterrains bewirkt jedoch auch einen Verlust an Übersichtlichkeit und Orientierung. Die Differenzierung und Spezialisierung im Informationsmarkt, die daraus resultierende Intransparenz des Informationsangebots und der vielen heterogenen Rechercheinstrumente sowie die zunehmende Komplexität von Erkenntnis- und Wissensstrukturen hat auch die Entwicklung und Etablierung einer Vielzahl neuer Tätigkeiten, Dienste und Berufe im Umkreis der Intermediation von Information begünstigt.
