    Abstract
Many companies now recognise the importance of knowledge as a factor in ensuring the organisation's success. Such organisations will create a knowledge infrastructure linking all aspects of the process, such as knowledge creation, dissemination, storage and application. This infrastructure will involve staff, processes and systems from a range of areas within the organisation. Trained information professionals can expect to play an important role in such services. The limitations of indexing services for online databases will require the input of information specialists in undertaking specialised searches

    Abstract
At Rotterdam Ports Authority in the Netherlands the Habour information database includes a press cuttings service and various online databases. To enable research staff to have direct access to information the POINT (Point Information Net) was begun in 1993. Using Verity software POINT provides simultaneously full text searching on a range of databases. The software uses current Web indexing technqiues to overcome the problems of excessive recall and low precision. A key element is the system's ability to recognise word combinations

    Abstract
On 19 Aug 94 a group of readers' advisers met to discuss their problems in Utrecht Provincial Central Library in the Netherlands. The panel felt that too much emphasis had been placed on libraries' information role and that more effort should be devoted to recreational reading through organising lectures and reading groups. It was felt that training sessions should be organised and a network created for the exchange of ideas

    Abstract
The proliferation of electronic databases and reduced library collections require researchers to be familiar with an increasing range of bibliographical resources. To assist users in searching multiple databases the PICA network in the Netherlands has developed PiCarta as a single information source. The servie enables users to access bibliographical databases and electronic journals using Boolean logic, fuzzy operators, and subject weighting. The system is, however, dependent upon indexing methods used in original sources

    Abstract
At Limburg Provincial Central Library and Information Service in the Netherlands the online public catalogue has been replaced by a new system, Foundation. The OPAC network was an automated version of the card catalogue, whereas Foundation has been developed entirely from scratch. The system runs on Windows software and assists even inexperienced users to formulate suitable search strategies. The system accepts online catalogue records from other sources and has attracted considerable intersts from several areas, including the publishing industry

    Abstract
Although the librarian in an industrial concern is ideally located at the forefront of information technology, many industrial librarians view their collections as mere warehouse of information. Information is a primary resource and information management must be recognised as an important element within the company. The information manager is responsible for identifying the company's information needs and the implementation of an information strategy. The information manager should follow 6 basic concepts: actuality, availability, accessibility, retrievability, deliverabiblity and usability

    Abstract
As a result of the growing pace of developments in the electronic information industry the EC Commission invited applications for the creation of a data base of producers and their services. Tha contract was awarded to the European Information Industry Association, which in collaboration with ECHO (European Commission Host Organisation) has created the I'M GUIDE (Information Market Guide) service. Information on the products, services and manufacturer is contributed by a network of correspondents. The data bank is updated fortnightly and contains more than 4.000 references. The system is available for online access 24 hours daily. It offers natural language searching in English, french and Italian and a menu-driven system in the 9 EC languages

    Abstract
To assist users with accessing the growing range of information sources Twente University Library in the Netherlands has developed OBIS (Online Bibliotheek Informatie Systeem / Online Library Information System). OBIS provides access to online databases and a range of library catalogues, including Twente's. However, a survey of staff in the Department of Applied Education and Information Science Studies showed that library services were underused. The survey showed that users relied heavily on printed information and contacts with colleagues. To overcome this a user education programme is currently being developed

    Abstract
Modern online information systems have been criticized as being too complicated for the average information seeker. To overcome this problem interfaces have been developed to assist users at all stages of the information transfer process from searching to analysis and evaluation of retrieval data. However, the effectiveness of an interface will depend on the skills of the user. Further development of interfaces will be aided by the use of Windows and mouse controlled systems

    Abstract
Modern technology has radically altered the administration of information services and offers a range of alternative sources of information. Librarians must be prepared to use the technology to highlight the importance of their services. Benchmarking provides a useful guarantee to standards of service and assists in improving services on an ongoing basis. In the Netherlands useful models for assessing services have been developed by the Instituut Nederlandse Kwaliteit and the Economic Instituut voor het Midden- en Kleinbedrijf

    Abstract
In 1997 the European Commission published its report, Public Libraries and the Information Society, which points out the impact the information society will have for the ordinary citizen. Aim of the study was to show how libraries must adapt their services to the challenges. However, a majority of Europe's 40.000 public libraries have yet to take their 1st steps towards automation. Closer cooperation amongst all types of libraries is urgently required together with adequate training. Progress must be regularly monitored

    Abstract
A study of new information systems and databases shows that insufficient help is provided to enable users to exploit these resources adequately. Despite surveys which show that users rarely employ Boolean logic appropriately in formulating search strategies database producers continue to use it as an indexing tool. Moreover, although much effort has been devoted to developing navigation techniques to search databases, problems still arise with insufficient entry points and links between systems. Resources are currently being channelled into the development of virtual reality systems to help users
