    Abstract
    Yewno findet Themen und Konzepte (Suchbegriffe und ihre Abstraktionen) in englischsprachigen digitalen Texten mit Methoden des maschinellen Lernens und der künstlichen Intelligenz. Als Ergebnis Ihrer Suchanfrage werden die Konzepte, die Ihre Anfrage betreffen, in vielfältigen sachlichen Beziehungen als graphisches Netzwerk präsentiert, über das Sie einfach navigieren können. Auch versteckte thematische Beziehungen werden hier sichtbar gemacht, die vom Bekannten zu neuen Entdeckungen führen. Im Rahmen einer Pilotphase können Sie über einen interdisziplinären Ausschnitt aus aktuellen englischsprachigen Fachzeitschriften verschiedenster Fachgebiete recherchieren. Die zu den Themen gehörigen Artikel werden in Ausschnitten unmittelbar angezeigt und können in den meisten Fällen direkt als Volltext aufgerufen werden.
    "Die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek testet den semantischen "Discovery Service" Yewno als zusätzliche thematische Suchmaschine für digitale Volltexte. Der Service ist unter folgendem Link erreichbar: https://www.bsb-muenchen.de/recherche-und-service/suchen-und-finden/yewno/. Das Identifizieren von Themen, um die es in einem Text geht, basiert bei Yewno alleine auf Methoden der künstlichen Intelligenz und des maschinellen Lernens. Dabei werden sie nicht - wie bei klassischen Katalogsystemen - einem Text als Ganzem zugeordnet, sondern der jeweiligen Textstelle. Die Eingabe eines Suchwortes bzw. Themas, bei Yewno "Konzept" genannt, führt umgehend zu einer grafischen Darstellung eines semantischen Netzwerks relevanter Konzepte und ihrer inhaltlichen Zusammenhänge. So ist ein Navigieren über thematische Beziehungen bis hin zu den Fundstellen im Text möglich, die dann in sogenannten Snippets angezeigt werden. In der Test-Anwendung der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek durchsucht Yewno aktuell 40 Millionen englischsprachige Dokumente aus Publikationen namhafter Wissenschaftsverlage wie Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Wiley, Sage und Springer, sowie Dokumente, die im Open Access verfügbar sind. Nach der dreimonatigen Testphase werden zunächst die Rückmeldungen der Nutzer ausgewertet. Ob und wann dann der Schritt von der klassischen Suchmaschine zum semantischen "Discovery Service" kommt und welche Bedeutung Anwendungen wie Yewno in diesem Zusammenhang einnehmen werden, ist heute noch nicht abzusehen. Die Software Yewno wurde vom gleichnamigen Startup in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stanford University entwickelt, mit der auch die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek eng kooperiert.     Abstract
    Wenn Larry Page und Sergey Brin irgendwo auf der Welt auf eine Bühne klettern, ist Ausnahmezustand. Längst sind die Erfinder von Google, die erfolgreichste Suchmaschine im Internet, Popstars geworden, scheinbar unzerstörbare späte Kinder der New Economy, deren Geist sie mit dem grandiosen Siegeszug ihres Produkts retteten über den Niedergang der zahllosen Internet- und Start-up-Träume, die zu Beginn des Jahrtausends zerplatzten. Eigentlich wollten die beiden netten Jungs nur eine etwas funktionstüchtigere Suchmaschine für ihre Universität basteln. Doch was 1997 in Stanford Studenten, Lehrern und Verwaltungsangestellten unter Google zur Verfügung stand (Google, eigentlich Googol, ist der mathematische Begriff für eine Riesenzahl, Brin und Page hatten ihn versehentlich falsch geschrieben), wuchs nach der Firmenausgründung in kürzester Zeit in den virtuellen Himmel. Mitte 2000 bereits erledigte Google 15 Millionen Suchanfragen pro Tag, nur 10.000 waren es noch Mitte 1998 gewesen. Anfang 2001 kletterte die Zahl auf 100 Millionen Suchanfragen pro Tag, 10.000 pro Sekunde. Nach dem Börsengang im August 2004 wurde Google milliardenschwer. Im Sommer 2005 besaß jeder der Firmengründer ein Reinvermögen von mehr als zehn Milliarden Dollar. Heute ist "googeln" als Verb im Duden aufgenommen, ebenso wie sich "to google" im angelsächsischen Sprachraum etabliert hat. In der Google-Story zeichnen der Pulitzer-Preisträger David A. Vise und Mark Malseed den ebenso spannenden wie wechselhaften Aufstieg der Google-Erfinder nach. Eine wahre Heldenstory -- und an manchen Stellen zu dick aufgetragen, insbesondere dann, wenn der Suchmaschine "menschliche Eigenschaften" zugesprochen werden. Aber es ist durchaus spannend zu verfolgen, wie zwei amerikanische Jungs innerhalb von nur fünf Jahren mit einem kalifornischen Studentenprojekt die globale Informationskultur umzustülpen vermochten. Zumal Vise und Malseed die Schwierigkeiten des Unternehmens mit Datenschutz und Copyright, mit Wettbewerbern und Konkurrenten nicht verschweigen. Und wer dazu noch die 23 Google-Suchtipps mitstudiert, wird nach der Lektüre noch leichter durchs Internet navigieren.

    Abstract
    Das Werk behandelt die aktuellen Entwicklungen zur inhaltlichen Erschließung von Informationsquellen im Internet. Topic Maps, semantische Modelle vernetzter Informationsressourcen unter Verwendung von XML bzw. HyTime, bieten alle notwendigen Modellierungskonstrukte, um Dokumente im Internet zu klassifizieren und ein assoziatives, semantisches Netzwerk über diese zu legen. Neben Einführungen in XML, XLink, XPointer sowie HyTime wird anhand von Einsatzszenarien gezeigt, wie diese neuartige Technologie für Content Management und Information Retrieval im Internet funktioniert. Der Entwurf einer Abfragesprache wird ebenso skizziert wie der Prototyp einer intelligenten Suchmaschine. Das Buch zeigt, wie Topic Maps den Weg zu semantisch gesteuerten Suchprozessen im Internet weisen.
