    Abstract
    In diesem als Gespräch konzipierten Beitrag geht es um zwei Fragen: Welche Aufgaben soll die universitäre Bibliothek haben und wie ist eine Darlegung der Qualität ihrer Dienstleistung möglich? Es zeigt sich, dass für die Beantwortung dieser Fragen gerade die Automatisierbarkeit der bibliothekarischen Dienstleistung ein entscheidender Punkt ist. Zukunftsfähig sind vor allem jene Aufgaben der Bibliothek, die sich, im Gegensatz z.B. zu Suchmaschinen, gerade nicht automatisieren lassen. Dazu zählen primär Beratung und Schulung im Sinne einer aktiven, an Nutzer/innen orientierten Informationserschließung. Automatisierung kann hier nicht möglich sein, wenn man davon ausgeht, dass das Ziel des (universitären) Lehrens und Lernens nicht nur in Ausbildung, sondern v.a. auch in Bildung besteht. Mit selbstbestimmter kritischer Reflexion von Wissen, als Sinn von Bildung, ist z.B. eine automatisierte Informationsrecherche unvereinbar, da sie auf informationelle Selbstbestimmtheit verzichtet. Die Automatisierbarkeit hat auch Relevanz für die Frage, wie die Qualität der bibliothekarischen Dienstleistung dargelegt, gesichert und argumentiert werden kann. Eine nicht automatisierbare bibliothekarische Arbeit entzieht sich einer ausschließlichen Quantifizierung durch Leistungskennzahlen, sie ist Teil eines immateriellen, Wissen schaffenden Prozesses. Umgekehrt sind es vermutlich v.a. automatisierbare Dienstleistungen, deren Effizienz und Qualität quantifizierend darstellbar sind. Darin zeigen sich die Grenzen einer rein quantitativen Abbildung von Qualität. Abschließend wird die Möglichkeit einer am qualitativen Forschungsparadigma orientierten Beschreibung der Dienstleistungsqualität der Bibliothek skizziert, die auch immaterielle Werte sichtbar machen kann.
