    Abstract
    Describes the origins of the CATaloguing and Retrieval of Information Over Network Applications (CATRIONA) Study in the BUBL Subject Tree service and nots its aims: to investigate the requirements for developing procedures and applications for cataloguing and retrieval of networked resources (particularly via the Internet); and to explore the feasibility of a collaborative project to develop and integrate them with existing library systems. The project established that a distributed catalogue of networked resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces with information on hard copy resources is already a practical proposition at a basic level.     Abstract
    The Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR)'s hierarchical system defines families of bibliographic relationship between records and collocates them better than most extant bibliographic systems. Certain library materials (especially audio-visual formats) pose notable challenges to search and retrieval; the first benefits of a FRBRized system would be felt in music libraries, but research already has proven its advantages for fine arts, theology, and literature-the bulk of the non-science, technology, and mathematics collections. This report will summarize the benefits of FRBR to next-generation library catalogs and OPACs, and will review the handful of ILS and catalog systems currently operating with its theoretical structure.

    Abstract
    In this paper I describe a conceptual design of a bibliographic retrieval system that enables more thourough control of bibliographic entities. A bibliographic entity has 2 components: the intellectual work and the physical item. Users searching bibliographic retrieval systems generally do not search for a specific item, but are willing to retrieve one of several alternative manifestations of a work. However, contemporary bibliographic retrieval systems are based solely on the descriptions of items. Works are described only implcitly by collocating descriptions of items. This method has resulted in a tool that does not include important descriptive attributes of the work, e.g. information regarding its history, its genre, or its bibliographic relationships. A bibliographic relationship is an association between 2 bibliographic entities. A system evaluation methodology wasused to create a conceptual schema for a bibliographic retrieval system. The model is based upon an analysis of data elements in the USMARC Formats for Bibliographic Data. The conceptual schema describes a database comprising 2 separate files of bibliographic descriptions, one of works and the other of items. Each file consists of individual descriptive surrogates of their respective entities. the specific data content of each file is defined by a data dictionary. Data elements used in the description of bibliographic works reflect the nature of works as intellectual and linguistic objects. The descriptive elements of bibliographic items describe the physical properties of bibliographic entities. Bibliographic relationships constitute the logical strucutre of the database

    Abstract
    Metadata is a resource which can assist the information retrieval of digital documents on the Internet.     Abstract
    Examines international efforts to promote metadata as a common, interactive resource description tool for the Internet. These efforts centre on the Dublin Core Element Set, but include qualifiers such as those promoted by the Canberra Qualifiers. The LoC Network Development and MARC Standards Office maintains the Dublin Core / MARC / GILS (Government Information Location Standards) crosswalk which maps the common and correlative elements of each system. Describes current international initiatives and issues. Describes the Nordic metadata project which is aiming to create the basic elements of a metadata production and utilization system based on the Dublin Core Metadata Element Set.     Abstract
    Purpose - This paper aims to explore the traditional and emerging roles of cataloguing professionals in a global network information environment. That exploration becomes even more critical in view of migration of information resources into digital, electronic and virtual domains. Design/methodology/approach - An exploratory research design was adopted. The method was to first examine current issues in library and information practice with specific focus on digital technology, the electronic environment, automation, networking, the internet, cyberspace and virtual libraries. The next approach was to examine the challenges of operating in a globalized information environment. Findings - Cataloguers have key roles in knowledge segmentation, identification, organization and authentication. They are vital as content and system managers, software specialists and information retrieval system designers. In all, more than 23 roles are articulated for forward-looking cataloguing professionals. Originality/value - The paper's originality lies in its argument that roles are correlates of competencies and that as the practice of knowledge organization migrates to a dominantly global information network environment, cataloguers must upgrade their competencies in order to effectively operate in the emerging environment.

    Abstract
    Examines the problem of errors in the chief source of information and their transcription into catalog records. A survey of 80 different OPACs was undertaken, looking at the occurrence of "sic" and "i.e." in titles and the position of the errors within the titles. The various usages of "sic" and "i.e." are categorized and described; these range from those where the error is obvious to some where there seems to be no error at all. Some seem to be clear misuses, particularly the common system of using additions in square brackets to spell out numerals, and in some cases the cataloger goes beyond what is required. Concludes with recommendations for improvement in retrieval.

    Abstract
    A research project was conducted in which proper JAPAN/MARC bibliographic records for 158 major Japanese classical works were identified manually, since existing records contain little information about works included in the resources. This paper reports the detailed method used for work identification, including selecting works, obtaining the bibliographic records to be judged, and building the judgment criteria. The results of the work identification process are reported along with average numbers that indicate the characteristics of certain classics. The necessity of manual identification was justified through an evaluation of searches by author and/or title information in a conventional retrieval system.

    Abstract
    The aim of the CATRIONA (Cataloguing and Retrieval of Information over Networks Applications) feasibility study was to investigate the technical, organizational and financial requirements for the development of applications software and procedures to enable the cataloguing, calssification and retrieval of documents and other resources over networks such as the Internet. The CATRIONA feasibility study demonstrated that the idea of a distributed catalogue of Internet resources integrated with standard Z39.50 library system OPAC interfaces is already a practical proposition at its most basic level. Proposes that the next step should be a distributed CATRIONA demonstrator project, based on the Scottish University and Research Libraries (SCURL) group of libraries cooperating to catalogue local electronic resources and selected areas of BUBL Subject Trees, but also sufficiently 'open' to encompass other sites, projects and approaches

    Abstract
    Since Oliver's guide was first published in 2010, thousands of LIS students, records managers, and catalogers and other library professionals have relied on its clear, plainspoken explanation of RDA: Resource Description and Access as their first step towards becoming acquainted with the cataloging standard. Now, reflecting the changes to RDA after the completion of the 3R Project, Oliver brings her Special Report up to date. This essential primer concisely explains what RDA is, its basic features, and the main factors in its development describes RDA's relationship to the international standards and models that continue to influence its evolution provides an overview of the latest developments, focusing on the impact of the 3R Project, the results of aligning RDA with IFLA's Library Reference Model (LRM), and the outcomes of internationalization illustrates how information is organized in the post 3R Toolkit and explains how to navigate through this new structure; and discusses how RDA continues to enable improved resource discovery both in traditional and new applications, including the linked data environment.

    Abstract
    Information technology (IT) encompassing an integrated library system, computer hardware and software, CDROM, Internet, and other domains, including MARC 21 formats, CORC, and metadata standards (Dublin Core, TEI, XML, RDF) has produced far-reaching changes in the job functions of catalogers.     Libraries can add value to Internet resources by adding them to the library's catalogue in a manner consistent with the other resources held within the collection. Reports on OCLC studies into cataloguing Internet resources and accessing electronic periodicals. Existing retrieval methods on the Internet are limited because of shallow directory structures and idiosyncratic naming conventions.     Abstract
    Inferring the gender of named entities present in a text has several practical applications in information sciences. Existing approaches toward name gender identification rely exclusively on using the gender distributions from labeled data. In the absence of such labeled data, these methods fail. In this article, we propose a two-stage model that is able to infer the gender of names present in text without requiring explicit name-gender labels. We use coreference resolution as the backbone for our proposed model. To aid coreference resolution where the existing contextual information does not suffice, we use a retrieval-assisted context aggregation framework. We demonstrate that state-of-the-art name gender inference is possible without supervision. Our proposed method matches or outperforms several supervised approaches and commercially used methods on five English language datasets from different domains.

    Abstract
    It is contended that while there are considerable numbers of people interested in the application of information retrieval (IR) software on their home computers in their professional, working and recreational activities, they are not very well served in using it to best advantage. Describes the writer's attempts to transfer some of the recorded good practice of the first information managers to contemporary problems. Data input standards devoted to library organisation may be developed to establish a set of principles to encourage the consistent organisation of the entire range of objects which might be represented in databases.     Abstract
    Educational standards are a central focus of the current educational system in the United States, underpinning educational practice, curriculum design, teacher professional development, and high-stakes testing and assessment. Digital library users have requested that this information be accessible in association with digital learning resources to support teaching and learning as well as accountability requirements. Providing this information is complex because of the variability and number of standards documents in use at the national, state, and local level. This article describes a cataloging tool that aids catalogers in the assignment of standards metadata to digital library resources, using natural language processing techniques. The research explores whether the standards suggestor service would suggest the same standards as a human, whether relevant standards are ranked appropriately in the result set, and whether the relevance of the suggested assignments improve when, in addition to resource content, metadata is included in the query to the cataloging tool. The article also discusses how this service might streamline the cataloging workflow.

    Abstract
    This study assesses the current state of responsibilities and skill sets required of cataloging professionals. It identifies emerging roles and competencies focusing on the digital environment and relates these to the established knowledge of traditional cataloging standards and practices. We conducted a content analysis of 349 job descriptions advertised in AutoCAT in 2005-2006. Multivariate techniques of cluster and multidimensional-scaling analyses were applied to the data. Analysis of job titles, required and preferred qualifications/skills, and responsibilities lends perspective to the roles that cataloging professionals play in the digital environment. Technological advances increasingly demand knowledge and skills related to electronic resource management, metadata creation, and computer and Web applications. Emerging knowledge and skill sets are increasingly being integrated into the core technical aspects of cataloging such as bibliographic and authority control and integrated library-system management. Management of cataloging functions is also in high demand. The results of the study provide insight on current and future curriculum design of library and information-science programs.
